Short Story:
The day was glorious, with the lightest tender touch of cloud cover. A young, inspiring rider by the name of Claire had decided to throw her giant Clydesdale mare, known as MR Only In London, into the deep end and enter her into a three day eventing. The testing mare had never competed and was ready to throw anything possible that her rider. Dressage being the first event, London took a moment to trot into the arena, her legs gracefully reaching upwards and stretching out while her neck held her body in beautiful conformation. Her coat shimmering with the sunlight and her quarter marks emphasising her hindquarters in an attempt to hide their weakness. Claire was definitely surprised by the mare but before long the head reached for the ground, tearing the reins from Claire's hands and the Clydesdale leapt her forehand into the sky, with her rear end following closely behind, throwing 3 large extravagant bucks and some less than desirable head tosses. As Claire, reinless, held on attempting to keeping her posture tall and focused, reached for the ever so slowly escaping reins. & It was as if the big bay mare knew her fun and games were over and so she pulled her neck back up, one more small forehand jump before Claire had the reins and reacted immediately, pulling the mare into a flight check. As she stared down into the mares devilish eyes she released the reins and allowed the mare to stand. But she hadn't yet been disqualified, and so Claire took a deep breath, asked London to collect and kicked her on. In the hopes she would at least finish the test. A few more temper tantrums occurred but nothing near the first. Claire was about to stick it out and even though the score was the competitions lowest, she was still proud that the mare had at least tried to finish the test.
Day two was show jumping, which the mare enjoyed the most. But sadly, she was coming up from behind at this point, and knowing London, Claire had no hope. But it was the experience that counted! So Claire entered the arena, under even more pressure seeing as the previous rider was an all clear round. She trotted around, London eyeing off the jumps with excitement in her stride before aiming at the first jump, a small vertical. London broke into a canter, excited and completely revved up. Leaping with speed over the blue and white decorated jump and clearing effortlessly before aiming to the second, which was another small vertical. Claire attempting with all her strength to pull the Clydesdale back, at least the smallest bit. But without luck the Clyde leapt, rather ungracefully over it and surprisingly enough clearing it as well before turning sharply around to face a set of jumps, 3 in a row. A vertical to open, an oxer in between and another vertical to finish. Claire had never trained for these and was sure the Clydesdale would at least knock. Cantering towards the set Claire felt something was wrong. London's stride lengthened as her excitement got the better of her. Leaping over the first jump, and straight to the second. Her speed not slowing. As she attempted to take the oxer her foot clipped the two top rails and as she landed to the ground, London's front feet curled under her chest, her face plummeting into the sand arena and her body flipping over her, Claire in direct way of being crushed. Luckily as the giant mare's back landed, Claire had already attempting to dismount, and her legs were the only thing stuck under the mare. In a panic London rushed her feet and galloped off, bucking and carrying on as the mare was known to do. They were hence disqualified from competing in cross country the next day. And Claire was rushed to the emergency room with possible fracture to one or both legs. The experience was better than any trophy though, and Claire was proud that her mare even made it to day two.
come on Piaffe, share the drafts ;P
