The call of adventure kept the cats quiet, and the gazes from each were kept on a delicate swivel. As Emerald Darter rushed ahead of the two others, more caution was given from the pair hanging slightly back. Inkscratch looked to the right, while Heatseeker to the left - each giving attention to any blind spots that Emerald Darter might have. Despite not having been a very organized patrol, and more of a spur of the moment instead, the trio seemed to work well together. As they continued on, Inkscratch caught something out of the corner of its eye; some bread! Yum. (+4FP banana bread)

It was nearing time to head back when the terrain gave way into patches of more dense vegetation, spikes of green poking through the dirt even despite the cold. The smells were fragrant, herbal, and everyone couldn't help but think there must be something of use hidden among the scents and sights of this rare greenery of Leafbare. Emerald Darter sniffed each patch with care, and though Heatseeker couldn't help but think that Emerald Darter didn't really know what she was looking for, the cat seemed to turn up with something that could be useful. (+1 tansy)

On the way to meet the rogues, the cats come across a stash of hidden items! (+1FP wild berries, +1FP wild berries, +1 sweet-sedge, +10 stardust)

Unfortunately, it seems the rogues were saving those for later, and don't take kindly to the pair taking their stuff. One rogue pounces, and the patrol gets into a fight. (The rogues attack! Atlas is minorly hurt; -15% HP, but no rest is needed)

Afterwards, a stranger pads up, asking Yang and Atlas for help. (Furzetuft asks for a favor! She would like 1 herb in exchange for something of hers. Will the cats accept the trade?)

"Hey, Halfsun, weren't you just in the medicine den not all that long ago?" Paletteswirl's tail swished behind them as they picked their way down the muddy path. As one of the very few cats in Summerclan that didn't mind the inherent dampness of Newleaf, they were a natural choice to go on patrol at this time of year. To their right, Halfsun was peering up through the leafless trees, scouting for any birds that might have migrated back early.

"Hmm? Oh, yeah, I was for a bit. Nothing the medicine cat couldn't take care of." Halfsun certainly sounded better than he had a few days ago, though his energy levels weren't quite back to normal yet. Granted, nobody in Summerclan had been particularly energetic as of late - not after what had happened to Goosefeather, whose limp body had been dragged back to camp by a near-hysterical Copperfleck after their last patrol, yowling about an owl attack.

The pair strode on in uncomfortable silence, neither cat willing to broach the subject that weighed heavily on everyone's mind. Eventually, though, Halfsun's restlessness got the better of him. "Do you think Goosefeather's gonna make it?"

Paletteswirl startled at the sudden question, almost slipping on a particularly muddy patch of pine needles. "I... I don't know, Halfsun. I have faith in our medicine cat's abilities, but you saw how bad of a state she was in. We all did." The odd-eyed tabby sighed heavily, staring down at their distorted reflection in the muddy puddle in front of them. "I don't even know if they were still breathing by the time Copperfleck got back."

Halfsun padded over to join his patrolmate, his usually optimistic demeanor replaced with a more dour expression. "To tell the truth, I'm more concerned about Copperfleck. He's been inconsolable since he got back from patrol - hasn't left Goosefeather's side once since she was taken to the medicine den. Hardly eats anything, either." He swatted irritably at his reflection in the puddle, sending murky ripples across its surface. "I'm worried he's going to starve himself out of grief."

Paletteswirl's ears flattened at the sentiment, but they couldn't deny that Halfsun had a point. "He's not going to be the same cat he was before that patrol, I'll give you that." An icy gust of wind blew through the underbrush, causing both cats to shiver. "Only time will tell exactly how he's going to change, though."

"Fair point," Halfsun agreed, shaking muddy water from his paw. "In either case, I don't think it'd be a good idea for him to go on patrol again for a while, especially not if Goosefeather..." The tom's voice trailed off, but both cats knew exactly what was being implied, and neither of them wanted to think about that possibility.

"As much as I dislike leaving things to fate, we have to trust that Starclan will make the right decision," Paletteswirl conceded with a sigh. "It's between them and our medicine cat now." Both cats looked up as the sound of distant honking echoed through the forest, and the pair could just make out the shape of a flock of geese high overhead, returning to the half-frozen pond at the edge of Summerclan territory.

"I just don't want to be the one to have to tell Beep."

★ Skyfire smiled to herself, trotting a couple of paces away from the strange fellow to find a space to cozy into. As she found a dry spot between slabs of metal and cool concrete, she also heard the scuffling of tiny paws. Wedged in a little crevice, she soon found her dinner. (+2FP shrew, +1FP bugs)

★ She then searched around for anything soft she could rest her head upon. Moss, feathers, scraps of fabric- truly, anything more comfortable than stone. In her searches, she was lucky to find a few other resources for her travels. (+1 alder bark, +1 dried oak leaves, +1 tansy, +1 lamb's ear)

★ Once satisfied with her findings, Skyfire returned to the sheltered nook to set up her nest. Unfortunately, the cavity was more narrow than initially thought- and lined with pointed shards of splintered metal. She let out a hiss as the edged alloy sliced into her shoulder. (Skyfire has lost -25% health from a shoulder wound! No posts of rest are needed, she can patrol again.)

I hung limply from the black feline's jaws, dragged haphazardly across the fresh forest soil. Filthy melted snow clung to my wooden frame, seeping into the bark and soiling my fibers. It was beyond embarrassing to be handled by these inconsiderate creatures! The black feline's breath smelled rank. I was practically drenched in salmon-scented saliva! Every porous inch of my being coated in a cursed amalgamation of grimy drool and abominable snowmelt. Despite this, there was one redeeming factor of my current circumstance.

From what I could tell, the rosetted tabby tom trotting alongside my captor appeared to possess no ears. It was difficult to tell, while dangling upside down as I had been, whether they were simply hidden amidst all of that fluff or if they were gone entirely. I assumed the latter, however, as the feline that held me in her grasp would occasionally reach out to tap the lad's shoulder. Typically right before she would make some sort of motion with her ears or tail. As if to get his attention so as to communicate in some physical way... At least, it provided some purpose to my shameful predicament.

There was also the matter of the two other cats trudging along behind the two. They spoke only to eachother, never to the black cat or her rosetted companion. To be frank, they hardly acknowledged the duo at all. Not that I blamed them at all. The she-cat carrying me did have an intimidating aura about her. What with that stern look in her eyes and the way her shoulders were held stiffly upright. One could say she had a stick up her- well, you get the point. She seemed uptight by all senses of the word.

Only, with this earless tom, she seemed to ease up ever so slightly. There was a bizarre expression carved upon her complexion. One that an inanimate object such as myself couldn't quite interpret, nor understand. Every step the tom took, she watched- carefully. If he so much as stumbled or hesitated, she was quick to react, yanking me about in her fervor. It was frustrating for me, to say the least. But, at least this odd fellow without any ears had somecat out there looking out for him.

Starfire wasn't even sure where the blow had come from. She didn't recognize the cat, so TreeClan must have been - unfortunately - growing. The cat had no recognition in their eyes as they chased the rogues away, and Starfire felt defeated, hurt, and hopeless. Where would they go now? What would they do? In their fleeing, they left Mudmask near their makeshift camp, trying to see if they could salvage anything, or if the TreeClan cats would leave them alone and perhaps let them come back to their temporary home. That would truly make Starfire's life easier.

Through it all, the cat couldn't help but wonder if she should cut her losses and find somewhere else to live entirely. Since leaving the abandoned building after learning the stars and Spark were wrong about the apocalypse, Starfire hadn't seen a sign from the skies or from her dreams. It was bothering her, and turning her jaded towards the celestial. If they didn't want to speak to her, they must have good reason. And she was beginning to wonder if that reason was Winterstar.

Starfire looked over at Winterstar now, the she-cat ranting to Firewhistle and stomping, pacing, her ears pinned back and her eyes blazing with the fire of wanting Hemlockstar to pay. Starfire couldn't bring herself to argue that they should give up, disband, and split; mostly because she knew that Winterstar's explosive personality would shine through, and she would be told she couldn't leave until the mission she had signed up for was done. It was a lose-lose situation in Starfire's mind.

As she stopped, sat down, and looked out, she realized that she might not be the only one having these doubts. Sunglare, sitting across from her, was looking down. Her eyes didn't betray a lot, but Starfire was used to reading someone else's thoughts in their body language. Sunglare was clearly uncomfortable, and the way their eyes kept drifting towards the heart of TreeClan territory... it was clear that Sunglare had been having second thoughts. Starfire squinted over at Sunglare, wondering if there was more to it, but at that moment Sunglare looked up, and her eyes returned to a guarded, hardened look. Starfire wouldn't have her answers today, but maybe she could escape and hatch a plan with another.

"Starfire!" Winterstar barked out, her voice harsh and unforgiving. "Pay attention, I asked you a question!" Starfire resisted the urge to roll her eyes and walk away right now, nodding over at her 'leader' instead. "Do you remember how many TreeClan had in its ranks when we left?"

Starfire shook her head silently, noting in her mind that Winterstar should have the same knowledge she had. Especially as a cat that supposedly wanted the deputy position so badly. "Much more than we have, that's for sure," Starfire said with as much respect as she could muster in her voice. "I didn't recognize the cat that chased me off, so in reality they've probably continued to grow, rather than shrink as we had hoped."

Winterstar let out a dissatisfied noise, batting angrily at a rock in front of her, sending it scattering off towards the TreeClan border. Starfire watched it go, tracking the rock and letting her gaze shift up to the border. In the distance, another TreeClan patrol was out and about, clearly checking on the status of their small band, seeing if they had left or not. As she realized that, Mudmask rounded the corner, trotting back with a shake of his head. There would be no returning to their makeshift camp closer to the TreeClan camp.

"We will attack then," the leader said matter of factly, as if the deal was settled. Sunglare and Starfire's heads snapped over to Winterstar with the same look of disbelief, though Mudmask and Firewhistle both seemed happy with the plan, nodding along with Winterstar as she continued to make her plans. "Sunset, we work on leaving. Midnight, we attack. Be prepared." Winterstar stalked off, assumedly to hunt, Firewhistle and Mudmask quick on her heels. Starfire tried to make eye contact with Sunglare, to see what was going on through their head, but they were looking down again. Starfire was left with her own thoughts, and she wasn't sure what was the right choice.
