The forest was oddly quiet - even the birds activity seemed to cease. No chirping, no rustling of the branches - even the smallest twigs breaking would be noticeable throughout the entire forest. It had been a couple of days since Nona's sacrifice. She was finally regaining consciousness, and while she was making a swift recovery in the Medic's den, she had come to the realization of what she had done. She had no regrets though.
Cora, not wanting to bother Nona in her condition, opted to speak with Gala instead. However, Cora had yet to return from her journey. And as more time passed, the clan only grew more uneasy. And so, Swan had to do something - be transparent with the clan. Let them know the danger they were truly in; let them know what had really happened to Nona. But damn, if it wasn't difficult...
Swan found herself sitting atop the cliff as the sun rose, muttering to herself. "Stars, what am I going to do?" These voices of doubt clouded her mind heavily, but as her blue eyes stared forward, her resolve showed - she had no choice. She had to hold it together. For her clan, for her family, for Hope. She was the only one who could explain the situation to her clan. Sure, Bear and Baby had more direct experience with it, but she wouldn't dare ask those two to relive the moment. And so, Swan rose to her paws, making her way towards the edge of the cliff.
She looked down into her clan's camp, her tail flicking slightly. The cats below gazed up at her, with some being curious, and others knowing what was coming. With a breath and a shout, she cried.
"We need to have a meeting! Everyone, out of your dens - regular morning stuff can wait!"
The moment the entire clan had been waiting for. Dozens of cats scurried out of each den, taking their seats. Swan descended from the cliffside slowly, looking at each of the cats. She saw a variety of things in them - anticipation, fear, anxiousness... any emotion that could hurt her was showing.
The expressions of Nona and Gala's children were the most hurtful to gaze upon, though; at least those who knew they were their children. Lyra's brows were furrowed and her teeth bared slightly; Oak's deep green eyes were devoid of the normal eager glimmer within. Iris, while normally stoic, faltered - her claw anxiously drew against the dirt beneath it, repeatedly drawing over a broken heart she had etched into it. However, Swan knew that not just their children, but the entire clan needed closure. After the clan was settled, Swan began to speak.
"A couple days ago, Gala was killed. Baby and Bear witnessed this with their own eyes, and I can assure you, this is not a dream."
A few gasps emerged from the crowd, the cats looking at each other in worry. Most of the cats hadn't noticed Gala had wandered into their very camp; they were all too focused on the injured Nona that day.
"However, Gala lives. Nona sacrificed her own Goddess powers to revive her. Whether it was intentional or not, I don't know." Swan continued, her ears pinning back as the words left her mouth.
Baby and Bear, sitting at the back of the crowd, looked at each other in silence. They knew this meeting was coming - they didn't want to put fear into the clan themselves, and hadn't told anyone of what had transpired. Bane, who was sitting on the other side of Bear, quivered.
"Bear, you witnessed it?" Bane asked, her orange orbs wide.
"You don't have to worry about that." Bear replied. "We're all okay. Just listen to Swan."
Swan pressed on, the words coming to her easier as time went on. "Nona is expected to make a full recovery. She will live within our camp, and we will see if her Goddess powers can come back in time. However, we should expect the worst. There is... also another problem."
"Where's Hope?" Lyra suddenly asked from the crowd, her ears pinned back. Her brows were furrowed, and her eyes were squinted to cage the tears trying to break out. Hearing how her mothers had been so easily defeated had her blood boiling, her claws unsheathed and dug into the ground beneath her, tearing the grass from its roots.
"That is the next point." Swan replied. "Hope is currently under attack by, what Cora and I believe, to be the same cat."
"Cat? ANOTHER CAT IS DOING ALL OF THIS?!" Lyra hissed, raising to her paws with a lash of her tail. "NO. No way. I don't believe it."
"She's not lying..." A voice echoed from the Medic's den. Outside the den stood a bandaged and meek looking Nona. "Please... please listen to Swan, my daughter." She begged with her weak tongue - something Lyra never expected from her mother. Though Lyra was sass itself, even she wouldn't dare challenge her mother, and she quickly sat. Nona bowed her head to Swan, urging her to continue. However, until this moment, she hadn't been informed Hope was under attack too - this was a saddening revelation to her.
"I'm sorry you had to find out this way, Nona." Swan said softly before turning back to the clan. "Because of this, we have frozen Hope in a pool of water for the time being. We're hoping this can slow down the poison attacking her. In the mean time, we must find a way to defeat or at least subdue the cat doing this. Cora and I believe this isn't something that can be treated with herbs - we think it is something beyond our understanding. Perhaps magic, like the powers Rain and Lily possess." Swan gestured to the two mollies. "But... far stronger."
"Well, what can we do?" Another voice asked, that being of Nyra. Her yellow and black gaze lingered on Swan. "Is the cat doing this another Goddess?"
How did she figure it out that quickly? Swan thought to herself, looking over to Nona for guidance. Nona slowly nodded - it was time for this threat to be out in the open.
"Yes, it is. Her name is Vira. She used to be the Goddess of Balance, but after some... unfortunate things, became the Goddess of Corruption. Any thought you have had regarding harming another cat or the Heart itself has likely come from her poison." Swan explained, which drew the attention of Pop.
"Is there anyway to protect ourselves against it?" She asked quietly. "I think Lily mentioned something about a... wad?"
"Wards." Lily corrected. "But that's a great question..." Lily thought for a moment, her mind racing through a variety of spells and potions. "I would have to know more about Vira to even think about that."
"Cora is currently on the way to the moonpool to speak with Gala directly. She should have far more information soon." Swan explained, and Nona went to speak, but Swan shook her head. "Get back in the den and rest, Nona. We will ask for more information if what Gala provides isn't enough. We don't want to drain you anymore." Nona, respecting the molly's resolve and respect, nodded and retreated into the Medic's den. It didn't feel odd at all for Nona to be living amongst her clan - what felt odd was that Gala wasn't there with her - the two hadn't been apart this long ever...
"Is there anything for us to do until Cora returns?" Lyra inquired with a squint of her eyes. Though her mother had told her to stay calm during the meeting, she hadn't said anything about once the meeting concluded.
"Yes. Well, not anything specific. Our duties will resume as normal, but no one is to leave the camp alone. You must have one cat with you at all times, even if you are just going outside the camp briefly. The only reason Hope is alive right now is because we were together when the poison took effect." Swan emphasized, and the clan nodded. "Beyond that, I want the Scavengers to be on the lookout for anything that could be useful. There is a good chance we will have to fight Vira directly, and our normal means of claws and teeth likely won't work."
Lily's ears perked up, and she slowly rose her paw, silently asking to talk. "Yes, Lily?"
"If you all could be on the lookout for chains or other things that we can make into temporary accessories, that would be helpful. If I can make a ward to protect us against Vira, I'll need something to bind it to on each of you." Lily said, and she immediately watched as Pop's eyes widened, her pupils enlarging. Despite the clearly serious scenario these cats were in, the idea of crafting immediately got Pop's attention.
"In that case..." Swan began, her eyes narrowing as she thought for a moment before continuing her thought. "I want you guys to travel in pairs or groups, with at least one rogue. If you all are going to be hauling back stuff for Pop and Mink to make trinkets out of, you're going to need protection from greed. Lyra, if you want something to do, you'll accompany Pop on her searches."
Pop looked at Lyra with a big grin - though Pop was normally the quiet type, the idea of making so much stuff for the clan for such an important event was exciting in of itself. Lyra, both demoralized and frustrated by the situation with her mothers, rolled her eyes and nodded. "Sure, because jewelry crafting is going to be so important. If it is a Goddess, there's no way a chain with a wArD or whatever is gonna stop it."
"Let's not be so negative, Lyra." Oak perked up, but Lyra turned to him with a glare as sharp as a thousand daggers. He audibly yelped, and quickly stepped back. "S-sorry."
"Quit being so happy-go-lucky. There's no other way to describe the situation we're in than rough. And no other way to describe the position we're in, other than that we're completely screwed and out of our league." Lyra growled. "If a scavenger hunt guard is all I can be for now, so be it. If Vira lays another claw on one of my mothers though, I'll rip her to shreds my damn self. Come on, Pop."
Lyra stormed out of the camp, her tail lashing wildly. Pop, too excited to care that Lyra was obviously upset, pranced out of the camp after her. Swan watched as the two wandered off before turning her attention to the rest of the clan.
"We have a theory that Vira can't attack anyone else while already attacking someone else. So don't be too anxious - that being said, it IS just a theory. We'll know more whenever Cora returns. That's all I have for you guys, I wish I could say more or have more reassuring words, but this is a tough situation. I trust that we will pull through though." Swan said with a forced smile.
"Meeting adjourned."

Pop had bounded ahead of Lyra, humming to herself as she pawed at the bases of trees. Loners that wandered through the forest often liked to stash goodies at the base of trees, only buried a couple inches in the dirt - that's precisely what she was checking for. Lyra, trailing behind her, huffed quietly.
"Are you always this excited over dorky stuff?" Lyra inquired, and Pop peered over her shoulder with a big grin across her maw.
"Crafting is about the only thing I'm good at! And normally, it's not all that useful. You've got your amazing skills at fighting, I've got mine at creation. Don't you take pride in being a good fighter?" Pop inquired as she turned back to her objective, continuing to dig in the soil.
"Of course I am. But fighting is a lot more useful than crafting."
"Mm.. Not in the context of the Heart of Decay." Pop retorted, drawing the attention of Lyra, who bared her teeth.
"What does that mean, Oh Wise One?" Lyra asked, her paw tapping against the ground in both impatience and frustration.
"Well, the Heart of Decay is about helping other clans, right? Not hurting them or fighting to gain territory. I mean, the Rogues are really only hired by other clans to fight, or they're used to fight off predators that chase us scavengers around. Like badgers." Pop quivered at the thought of a badger. "Ugly critters."
"Are you saying my role is useless?" Lyra asked with a squint of her eyes, drawing a long dramatic sigh from Pop - which was rather out of character.
"How are you Nona and Gala's daughter?!" Pop groaned. "You are so darn sassy and overthink things cats say too much. They're so level headed and elegant, you're just... arrogant." Pop's quiet nature allowed her to observe cats far better than most would anticipate. Though she didn't talk, her ears were always perked up; and Lyra's sassy quips to all her other clanmates were hard to ignore.
"Excuse me?" Lyra scoffed, but it sounded more like disappointment rather than anger.
Pop sighed. "Sorry. That was too personal. I just mean that some positivity could do you some good. Think about it, you're guarding me while I find something to protect our clanmates. Your family. If we get rid of this Vira cat, maybe Nona can heal. This is very important work. You might just see it as pointless crafting, but I see it as my life energy. This is why I live. Your role isn't pointless - I was just pointing that detail out." Pop's paw struck something that caught her attention, and after she flung some more dirt aside, she found what appeared to be a rusted amulet, with a soft blue gem at its core.
"OO! Pretty." Pop dragged the amulet out of the dirt, looking back at Lyra. Lyra had taken a seat, her eyes locked on the ground. "Do you need to talk?" Pop inquired, lowering the amulet back to the ground.
"If Vira killed Gala - one of my mothers, even temporarily... we don't stand a chance. Not you, not me, not all forty of us." Lyra grimaced. "This is the first fight in my life time where I... don't think we stand a chance. And I'm afraid."
This was a side of Lyra that Pop had never anticipated seeing. Perhaps she had been way too harsh. She stared at Lyra for a moment, trying to decide if Lyra would do better with comfort or silence. Pop opted to stay quiet, allowing Lyra to lose herself in her emotions.
"I don't want to die, and I don't want Hope to die either. But if that poison killed Gala that fast, a little ice isn't going to protect my sister for long." Lyra rose a paw to her face, wiping her eyes with a quiet sniffle. "This is scary."
"Yes, it is. But if you help me, your sister will stand a lot better of a chance." Pop reassured, and Lyra nodded slowly.
"Okay. Lead the way... I got your back."
