Tidechaser nudged Clamfoot's shoulder with her own. “Guess you have no excuses not to move into town now.”
Clamfoot’s nerves still felt shot, but he managed a half-hearted smile at his friend. “Heck of a sign, huh?” He squeaked out.

The group meandered back to town, taking their time to let Crackerjack be gentle carrying the eggs. What a bounty, and they had a good excuse to use them right away since the heralds would be off again in the morning.
The sun set over the mountains as several community cats went about setting up a bonfire in the square and preparing a feast of eggs and fish. In the light of the hearth, watching his people eat and chatter, Clamfoot’s fluttering heart finally began to still.

Loamwhisper sat close to the fire, letting its warmth ruffle his whiskers. He was remembering why he liked it here, this warmth, this community …but also why he left. Despite the chatter all around him, it was so quiet here. No murmurs drifting between the grasses, no hum of the earth beneath him. No matter where he was, he always seemed to miss where he’d just left. It was hard, he thought, to have your heart and your soul drawn towards separate homes.

A sparkle of something in the dirt, glowing in the light. This would be good to bring back, the spark of color nestled inside a few herbs ready for taking. (+60 stardust, +1 wild garlic, +1 water hemlock)

The patrol sees a flurry of feathers on the ground. Upon closer inspection, it seems a hawk has made its home nearby, the feathers a sign of its hunting. (A predators has been scented! Does the patrol ignore the threat, or pursue it?)

Paws grew heavy, congestion a sure sign of sickness. Perhaps it was time to ensure everyone was healthy. (Goosefeather has fallen ill! She will need one of the following to be healed: goldenrod, honey, horsetail, or tormentil. They will lose HP each post if not healed.)

the fur along blacktoe's neck bristled as the scent of the strange cats filled his senses, his ears twitching as he lowered himself to the ground. as the senior hunter of the two he considered their options. he decided to eat the herbs he had gathered for strength.

the she-cat watched the cats with curiosity, suddenly she stood up. the tom quickly followed after her, with head and tail raised, they approached the cats confidently.

blacktoe called out to them, “hello, we haven’t scented any cats around here recently.. who are you?”

Darkthunder struggled for a moment, after such a fall her hind legs weren’t able to get the strength required to help her stand for a moment. Sandytear’s tried to support her but it was hard with the sneak attack slinking around the corner. Their leader stumbled back with an angered yowl, though no response could be made before the band of no gooders scampered off.

Moltencream coughed a bit, sniffling as he spoke. “Sandytears… maybe we should go home..” He asked, keeping his head low at first. He nuzzled the cream barred ticked tabby’s chest before cleaning his newly found face wound. Sandy never liked to be quiet, and this was no exception now. “Moltencream you should go home.” His words were firm and authoritative. Though his eyes held that sweet soft soul everyone knew him to be, he continued without interruption. “You're sick, and hopefully we can bring you back some herbs.. As of right now though you are going home” Sandy’s tail laid on Moltencream’s shoulder. “Hopefully myself and Dakrthunder can find some herbs for you.” Oysterstench rushed over to Moltencream climbing aboard his back for a moment. The small rodent nuzzled his snout along his spine before climbing down and returning to his ‘dad’. Moltencream’s muzzle frowned but he knew it was probably the best idea. His oval yellow eyes looked down to his front orange tow beans before pushing himself up. A soft sigh escaped him as his ears pinned back.

The trees seemed to know someone was leaving the party, the wind carried Moltencream on his way. Before he left Sandytears had asked him to send Fallfoilage their way, and Cinnamon too if they wanted to join. The sounds of rustling leaves left the party in good hopes. Sandytears wanted to stop and heal but Darkthunder insisted they continue. Oy squeaked, encouraging Sandytears to continue to push on.

pushing the lilac tabby aside, slatefur leaned down to sniff the bundle of fish lying infront of the group.
"you're right. this is oddly fresh. something feels off about this—who would just leave freshly caught fish all the way up here?"
"i guess you could say it's... fishy?" cedarshine said with a grin.
...
"...tough crowd."
hyacinthcall gave the bundle an unimpressed look. "looks fine to me, what're you so worried about?"
slatefur shook their head. "i say we leave it here. this could be a predator's catch, and i'd rather not have a pack of wolves tailing us back to camp when they find out their meal is gone."
shrugging, hyacinthcall stepped forward to grab the fish and the leaves. "imf iff's fmresh, fhere's mo mreason it'd be tampfered wiff or amyfing." he commented through the perch and sweet-sedge in his mouth. cedarshine nodded. "we should take it! leafbare is coming up anyway, and knowing corianderstar, we should probably start stockpiling ourselves."
slatefur still felt unsure. "but what if--"
"i'm the only hunter in this patrol, slatefur! i know what i'm talking about!" cedarshine looked genuinely hurt by slatefur's doubt, and they could've sworn they heard her voice start to waver.
the apricot tortie sighed in defeat. "fine, we'll take the fish. we should start heading back before the sun starts to set."
sniffling, cedarshine turned her gaze to her paws and nodded. the she-cat would usually get over things like this and return to her happy self in a few minutes, but cedarshine looked especially upset this time. slatefur tried not to let it bother them.

hyacinthcall ─ he/it
hyacinthcall's legs trembled as he hopped between stones on the way down the mountain. every time a paw slid off the edge of a rock, he bit down a little harder on the sweet-sedge leaves. hopefully flamenettle wouldn't mind a few holes in the herbs; but that wasn't likely. hyacinthcall knew what the clan's medic was like when things didn't go his way.
slatefur seemed to notice his quivering, because they decided to check up on him for about the eighth time during the trio's descent.
"hyacinthcall, are you sure you don't want me or cedarshine to carry that?"
"MMMFH. stmph bmffrinph mff!!!"
"...okay."
he turned his gaze to the sky, noting how quickly they had started to lose sunlight. with the changing of seasons, hyacinthcall doubted it would take long for some poor patrol to get lost in the dark and, like, fall into the lake or something stupid. he kind of hoped it'd be slatefur.
still quieter than usual, cedarshine spoke up.
"can we hurry? i'd like to get back to the camp with the other patrols, i told swissheart i'd help her watch the kits today."
slatefur nodded and started moving a little faster. "she's right. we should get a move on."

letting out a sigh through his nose, hyacinthcall hurried to catch up with the two, tightening his grip on the fish on the way. maybe he should've accepted slatefur's offer.

perhaps there was a glitch in the system or a spark in the circuit or a wire in the labyrinthic grid snapped because he couldn’t possibly be stuck with this bumbling idiot of a shield. he clutched the black iron railing of the bridge. shards of wind-burned metal bit into his skin, the smell acrid even above the murky sludge of the canals below.

the capital sprawled out before him like a serpentine creature lurching from slumber. other sleek steel bridges veined with streaks of indigo, navy and obsidian glinted as they arched over narrow-nosed boats flaunting colorful sails. squawking gulls greeted their mirror companions as they glided over canals, cooing pigeons dodged the swarm of media drones flocking to the nearest aristocat.

“... helloooo cathan?” a warm touch clasped his shoulder, jostling him forward. “have you been listening? i’m telling you. just because you have some grudge against me after last night doesn’t mean you have to sentence us both to hellish morning patrols. do yourself and your social life a favor… and saints, my sleep schedule too.” in the scarlet-soaked dawn, the whites of olivier’s teeth seemed more like the color of a faded bloodstain. perhaps it was a sign the ancients had granted him permission to give the idiot a wicked split lip. “so what do you say—deal?

cathan touched the hilt of his sword. the subtle motion sent olivier leaping a step back, the quick footwork surprisingly nimble considering everything he'd glimpsed from his shield so far.

“woah easy. you’re as grumpy as a goose who had his dessert stolen by a duck—”

“geese don’t eat dessert. neither do—”

“it’s a saying! but look, i am sorry about last night… and this morning too. truly. i swear i’ll make it up to you. i’ll give you the grandest apology you could ever want. i’ll make it public even. or i can buy you whatever you like—gifts, drinks, cake. do you like cake?”

he hissed a breath through his teeth. his shield was completely incapable of a moment’s silence. if he hadn’t sworn that stupid oath to protect his shield for all time and eternity, olivier would be joining the ducks in the canals.

he turned back to the view over the bridge. wrinkles of colors bloomed as floating holos of purchasable items flared to life with a wink, trailing behind a father of bouncing twins; as sector heirs adorned in academy-style cloaks swung their paper parasols at a teashop windchime; as backwater taverns morphed their flashing holo signs to a sedate close. the numbers on a mega-advertising display flashed: 06:00 between sports recaps, scientific communiques and the latest scandals. a slow rippling colorscape that flowed outwards as the dregs of night sipped away into the underbelly of the city.

it also meant he had work to do. they both did.

“schedules are for two cycles.” he adjusted the hem of his cloak. “if you’re going to complain, you better be there next time when the schedules come around.”

“wait what? you signed us up for backbreaking sleep-deprived morning patrols for two cycles?” a snap of wind tousled his shield’s bed-mused curls. and that dark knot of curls framed the crystalline horror in his firelight eyes. “why would you… saints, after last night, i thought we had an understanding. tell me you’re not serious—”

“have you ever considered that maybe i just like morning patrols?”

of all things, this seemed to shut his shield up. a tiny knot tangled into olivier’s brow as if this were an enigma, a cipher that needed decoding. “you… do?”

“i’ll leave that for you to consider as we find breakfast.” as he turned, the tail of his cloak whipped through the wind with a snap. “and do it, in silence.”
