it was a lovely day out, really. the sun half-cloaked in cloud cover, a cool breeze tousling strands of lilac and rose quartz, birds chirping from atop distant lampposts.

it was a lovely day out, sure, but that was entirely negated by the fact that they were in the middle of an ikea parking lot, brimming with unadulterated dread. see, today was supposed to be ar-raiyu's day off. days off were supposed to be spent at home, in the comfort of one's own bed, recouping for the rest of the work week. not at ikea. and especially not at ikea waiting for the one person who could sour the entire rest of their day with a single glance. ar-raiyu sighs. and then sighs again... and again.

"would you quit already?!" a huff interrupts their dejected train of thought, half-hearted glare piercing through the lowered driver's side window of their hot pink million dollar barbie jeep, voice dripping with mock irritation. "i'm here, let's go 🤨"

ar-raiyu shakes their head in feigned offense. "what, first you don't like the sound of my beautiful voice," they counter, raising an eyebrow as they slide out of the car. "and now you have the gall to rush me after being late to the business meeting you yourself planned? 😒"

"business meeting my you-know-what 🤨 why on earth would we be meeting for business over swedish meatballs and coffee? what are you, a freak?!"

in a flash of movement, cardinal is backed up against their lightly-dented green kia soul, its sun-heated surface practically photosynthesizing beneath them. "never insult my swedish meatballs again, you hear? 😡😡" ar-raiyu demands, finger pointed brusquely in their face. cardinal flushes bright red like the flushed emoji (😳 for reference. in case you were wondering) and ar-raiyu simply smirks at the sight of it. "enough fooling around, let's go."

they turn on their heel and begin the long trek to salvation—er, ikea—through the miles of dismal asphalt and recycled scrap metal. at least it was recycled, they supposed. it'd mean less complaining out of the other.

see, ar-raiyu had worked for the same corporation for ages, a widely-known, visionary travel company called "the farlanders." they largely dealt in travel affairs and assistance, with some recreational oil rigging business off to the side. for the longest time, ar-raiyu had been capped at second best, a certain golden boy being their department's top employee. but some.. misbehavior... and a sprinkling of tax fraud (🤷) had just gotten them laid off, and guess who'd been next in line?

naturally, this promotion couldn't have come at a worse time.

their company as a whole was under the scrutiny of the EPA (Exasperating Pacifist Agency), which apparently golden boy had been overseeing dealings with, and, as such, ar-raiyu immediately got smacked in the face with no less than the worst of it. congrats on that promotion by the way! 🥰

cardinal was an emissary for those EPA lunatics, which was what sparked their very... riveting first interaction. it was needless to say they'd get along just fine (while gritting their teeth at the mere sight of each other). they'd spend months working side by side, working to avoid having to step into the court of law over the company's little 'situation,' but it wasn't long before the two started to not feel quite so hostile around each other.

after all, working so closely with one another, one can only maintain their distance for so long. soon enough, it was without second thought that cardinal would pick up an extra coffee on their way into the office and ar-raiyu would have their favorite breakfast pastry waiting on their desk before they even stepped through the door.

and that brings us back to the present moment and their definitely-work-related meetup at ikea.

or it would, if there wasn't someone about to be pushed off the roof of said furniture store. the two slide to a stop in the middle of the street, mouths agape as they peer up at the scene above. but right as they do, the fighting pauses and the two green-hued figures on the roof—one of them oddly glitchy-looking—hug and make up. oh well, would've been entertaining to watch.

they continue on, the rows of parking spaces seeming only to expand the longer they walk. as they finally near the entrance, ar-raiyu observes their work partner through a sidelong glance. they really were something. their pallor was ashen, pale as ever, but there was something so very pulchritudinous about it. though they may be reprehensible and quintessentially obstreperous at times, they had to give it to them. they were pretty 🙈

they watch as cardinal's gaze follows a fuchsia-haired young woman rolling by on a child's scooter. what seems to be her tall dark and handsome husband is pushing an overflowing cart out of the front doors, one of the objects on set upon it oddly round and fluffy. huh.

"shall we?" they prod, snapping the other back to reality.

cardinal rolls their eyes. "fine."

and so the ikea adventures begin... 👀
