Buttermilk #1018

Postby BadgerBuddies » Sat Oct 19, 2024 2:15 pm

Inspired by a very nostalgic and beloved song I heard today for the first time in forever that brought me back to my younger days, still in the home I grew up in<3 what’s something that makes you nostalgic? Feel free to answer either for yourself, or on behalf of this Buttermilk!

Prompt:

Prompts like these make me so happy, so thank you for this! I will definitely yap and yap about this, so please bear with me!

The quick and short answer? Gen 3 My Little Pony. G3 was my generation of My Little Pony, so when Hasbro owned them, they were a massive part of my childhood as a little horse girl. A week or two ago, when the topic of My Little Ponies came up, I was chatting about old 2000s commercials and how crazy and aggressive they were with a buddy of mine on Discord, and I remember both of us going down the rabbit hole of the MLP wiki!

I grew up in a home full of millennials, so I technically grew up with a lot of things I have realized a lot of late '90s and early 2000s babies do not recall; Rainbow Brite, '80s Strawberry Shortcake, the Precious Moments ceramic line- I grew up with both Gen 1 and Gen 3 MLP (we don't talk about gen 2 or Gen 3.5 LOLLL). My Little Pony was by far my favorite thing as a child- I owned hundreds of them, and they had been VERY well-loved. I can remember clearly how excited I was to be gifted my favorite pony, Kimono, and when I got one of the mail-order ponies from the official website! I had PC games, coloring books and so much MLP merch. I had almost every movie, from "A Very Minty Christmas" to "The Princess Promenade"; and I remember way back when my mother's partner at the time was working in Philly- we stayed with him at the hotel while he worked during the day. I remember watching "Dancing in the Clouds" with his coworker's daughter who was my age, holding our little Starcatcher ponies and playing together.

I am always hit with a wave of both nostalgia and painful bittersweetness when I think back to all my ponies. I gifted them away to another little girl; they were very well-loved as I stated earlier, so it wasn't like they'd fetch a great price regardless; but yeah. My childhood was a very... unfortunate one; but my ponies got me through a lot. Having them to play with and inadvertently work through my grief and the after-effects of prolonged and (at the time) current trauma through said play may not have meant much to me back then, but now I can fully see and appreciate just how important that was to me and for me. I have been on a couple-year-long journey of reclaiming parts of my childhood, and I have been planning on purchasing a new Kimono and maybe even a few of the little charms the Gen 3 Ponies used to come within their packaging.

But yeah, thank you for reading this fully if you did, it means a lot <3 I figured that I would link some of my favorite My Little Ponies as a fun little tidbit in case it mattered to you c:

    Prompt:
When I was a kid, going to my grandma's house was the best treat of all time. They lived on a 10 acre farm practically in the middle of nowhere, and the freedom we had out there was to die for. Chalk on the mile long driveway, scooters, bikes, wagons, digging, anything we wanted.

We would often go for a visit in the summer, just one or two of us kids at a time. In the evening when it was starting to get too dark to play outside anymore, my grandma would call us in, and she would fix chocolate milk (chocolate syrup + skim milk) and kettle corn popcorn while we set up a board game. She would always partake in the treat, and always play whatever game we chose.

To this day, chocolate syrup mixed in milk makes me think of her and it takes me back to the exact moments at her house. The smells, the sounds, everything. What I wouldn't give for another day at her house. <3

Prompt:

I've been scared of thunderstorms for as long as I can remember.

Everyone in my family has tried to help in several different ways to reassure me, but even so, it remains a fear that I have.

Though my moment of nostalgia revolves around thunderstorms funny enough. A happy memory that I wish I could go back and relive every day and one that I reflect on often when it storms.

I was fortunate enough to grow up with my grandparents on my father's side of the family and was actually very close to my grandpa. Everyone in the family called me a "grandpa's girl" because there was a tad bit of favortism that stemmed from me being the youngest grandchild of the family- I will admit and I'm sure my entire family would admit it haha.

The important piece of information here is that me and my grandpa were close- and when I think of this nostalgic moment, it stems to him like a lot of things do.

Anyway, my grandpa was one of the many that tried to help me with my fear of thunderstorms. Whenever I was at their house as a child, whenever it stormed my grandpa would grab a blanket and let me climb in his lap while watching TV so I would have a feeling of comfort as the storm passed through.

When the storm was particularly worse than usual and focusing on the TV wouldn't help as much, my grandpa would always say "the angels are bowling up in the clouds". Whenever there was lightning, my grandpa said that meant the ball hit the pins, and then the thunder that followed was the noise the pins made as they fell down. If the lightning was extra bright and the thunder was extra loud, he would always go "ooh, they got a strike!" and would commentate the bowling game here and there as the storm passed by.

Even though my beliefs aren't necessarily the same now it is still something I reflect on to this day. Whenever I encounter a storm, I always think of my grandpa telling me that the angels in the clouds are having one heck of a bowling game. It's still a cute memory to reflect on for me even if my beliefs don't necessarily align anymore. This is one of my most cherished nostalgic memories too, and it's ironic that it comes to me during a period where I am filled with anxiety.

I have always been an avid animal lover. Growing up, all my favorite toys were animal-themed! As I got older, it was kind of as seeing the toys I used to love and cherish die off and stop being popular to the point they were no longer made. However, recently I found out they are starting to make new Littlest Pet Shops again and I was so happy I started crying in the middle of Walmart. LPSes were my absolute favourite thing as a little girl. Seeing them starting to come out again warmed my heart at the thought of my future kiddo being able to play with toys that I grew up loving. <3

Prompt: When I was a kid, Mum used to buy me a marble cake for the week; at the start of the week, I would eat it like a normal cake. But as the week progressed, the cake got drier and so by Sunday, she used to heat it up for me and put ice cream on it. So now, whenever I buy marble cake, I always end up putting the last slice with ice cream, whether it needs it or not. Might not be appealing to some, but to me, it's the best thing ever ^^

Prompt: Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven, specifically the first movement!!! It was the first song on a CD that my grandmother would listen to when driving! It always makes me think of her, and spending time baking with her, or driving with her to school in the mornings!! I still listen to the first movement when driving to work sometimes:)

i LOVE this prompt. i visited my grandma's house the other day for the first time in years, and i was hit with a HUGE wave of nostalgia. the smell was the biggest thing, but just walking through her whole house had me tearing up with childhood nostalgia. starting off in my dad's childhood room, that's where i'd sleep when i stayed over with my grandparents! he had an entire wall of dark corkboard and i loved to draw things for my grandparents and pin them up there, or just run my hands over the wall. it also had that distinct kind of.. cork-y smell. my dad's grandparents also instilled my love of birds in me- they always had a bunch of little audubon bird plushies that made realistic bird calls when you squeezed them. veryyy nostalgic. there are a TON more that i noticed while i was there, but i'll leave off with one i had forgotten about. there was a little ornamental metal segmented shrimp ornament (specific i know) my grandma got down in florida when we were on vacation together, and i was OBSESSED with it. i think i was just stimming/fidgeting with it now that i look back, but i was tickled pink to still see that little shrimp hanging there in her display cabinet. i'll end my yapping now, but thank you for letting me reminisce <3

Prompt: It's hard to explain and sounds kind of weird, but do you ever just get hit by a certain smell that makes you stand there and go i recognize this, but where from? And you really can't put your finger on it no matter how long you stand there and ponder it, but you are certain you know it and it makes you feel like you're a kid again, weight off your shoulders, remembering what used to be that's long gone now, and you don't know why this has made you think of it or feel that way? Random stores tend to really hit me this way for some reason, foods can do it too on the rare occasions it at least kind of makes sense.

I've read its because smell and taste are particularly closely linked to each other and to memories in our brains, hence why they can randomly flood us with nostalgia, but it's still always a bit of a trip when it happens!
