Edwin was used to the anger of The Tide. When your livelihood relied on traversing the sea, you learned to deal with her emotions in every form. This, however, was a bit extreme. The crew of the Serpent’s Cry stood dumbfounded in the middle of the deck, staring blankly out at the treacherous sea that threatened to sink their ship. Edwin growled, more exasperated than angry, really, before shouting orders at his crew. They each begrudgingly set out to do their work, as if the threat to their lives wasn’t enough motivation already. “Set course for the archipelago!” Edwin yelled over the sound of the storm, though he doubted they could even hear him. Under his breath, he said, “May Tiderunner have mercy on us all”.
The ship was not easy to tame amongst the storm, but somehow the measly crew managed it enough to stay afloat. The roiling sea dragged them wherever it pleased, but the crew remained intact. After some time, Edwin noticed they were headed for land. Not just any land, but the Tiderunner’s Archipelago, in the heart of the storm. The rain let up as they ran aground, shock taking over each of their expressions. “She has shown us mercy, after all” Edwin whispered as he padded up to the side of the ship, peering over the edge. He had been here many times, of course, they all had. They left offerings of coin and drink to the lady Tiderunner, asking for calm seas and safe travel in return. Edwin was never sure how much he truly believed, before. Now he had no question.
The crew of the Serpent’s Cry clambered over the side of the ship, dumbfounded for the second time that day. Edwin, this time, was included. At least, until the soft sound of mewing snapped him out of it. Looking toward the sound, he finally noticed the small pile of kittens huddled in the sand, protected from the storm by The Tide. He approached them, nuzzling them softly, and for a moment he thought he had caught the slight glimpse of soft blue fur and a whisper on the wind, saying “protect them”. Edwin gently lifted the kittens off the sand and as he did, the storm around the slowly faded into gentle waters and clear skies. He ordered his crew to bring an offering to The Tide at once, and brought the kittens on board the ship. Fang sneered at the little ones. “Captain, are you really going to try to raise kittens on a pirate ship??”
