"If'n y'all don't mind hurryin' yer tails up, I think I got somethin' for y'all t' see." The concat extraordinare, Luck of the Draw, padded out of a reddish-brown thicket, leading his boyfriends on this so-called hunt for food. None of them were real... 'hunter' material. Not even the one with hunter in his name, as his pink, not-so-sane boyfriend came trotting out behind him, stethoscope left back at home, as well as his 'pet', the unfortunate black rabbit named Eli who happened to have come along with him. He was generally left to his own devices nowadays, which... might have been better. Hearthunter fluffed his fur up, then shook his tail a bit, eying up the area Luck had slunk off to.
"You'd better not be kidding. You know I hate kidding." The pink cat sighed, and moved faster, looking behind him just once to make sure that the other two of their little group were keeping up. "Poison, Call, c'mon. I can't keep looking behind me to make sure you haven't got your tails stuck in a berry bush." He shook his tail the other direction, and gave his head a shake as if to clear it. "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon. You're going to make us laaaaate."
Love at Night's Call - or Call - took his time, oozing out of the bushes with the kind of grace and charm he was known for. Darting forward to catch up, he then slowed, and rubbed the entirety of himself under Hunter's chin from head to tail. "Calm, love. Calm. We're coming. Poison just had a.... thing. To do." The tip of his own tail crooked at the end, and he lay it aside Hearthunter's flank. "We're not going to leave you behind."
"Of course we are not." Came the reply, bodiless at first, and then shown to belong to the white-orange-black tortie. His ears were straight up in concentration, and his body slunk low to the ground as he avoided every single one of the clutching leaves of the berry bush, emerging to catch up to the rest of his group. He gave a trill of friendly amusement, and gave Hearthunter and Love at Night's Call both a soft headbutt as he unhurriedly caught up with Luck, who was waiting for them on the other side of the trees leading out onto the sandbar.
All four cats paused once they'd all caught up, eager to see just what Luck had spotted in this patrol of their territory. Of course, there was the ever-present ocean, and its waves lapping gently at the sand, but the thing 'to see' ended up a great deal less relaxing. Intermixed with the normal-looking ocean-water was a swirl of blood red. It was staining the ocean foam pink, and leaving bloody imprints on the sand. Luck frowned at the sight, and looked back to his mates. "Y'all seein' this, 'r am I jus' imaginin' things?" he asked, head canted to one side, and one ear lowered. "Looks like some kinda' bleedin' sign or somethin'."
Poison's tail dropped, and he narrowed his eyes. "More than that, Luck. I believe it very much is - as you put it - 'a sign of something'. The void has been growing larger, and I believe... this may simply be another step in the degradation of our home. If it is... Has anyone been able to contact our benevolent benefactor?"
Call sighed, and sat, curling his tail around his paws. "If you mean Chroma, then no. Not since weeks ago. Almost... a month? Two? It's hard to keep track of time here, but it's been a pretty dang long time." His tailtip twitched. "Could this have something to do with it? This... red sea?"
Hearthunter said nothing, but he'd gone absolutely rigid. His eyes widened slightly seeing the sight of what he could only assume was 'blood', and scenting the ocean air. His ears were straight back, and his tail nearly tucked under his legs. Poison was the one that noticed their mate's behavior first, and offered a gentle shoulder-nudge. "Hunter? Sweet Hunter, where has your mind traveled to, that you are so afraid?"
The pink cat opened his mouth, and then drew himself into a 'Halloween cat' pose, hissing loudly at the red sea, with fur all bristled, and limbs trembling. "Red red red red red red red red red red red..." he started chanting. "Redredredred!" His voice rose in volume until he was screaming the word 'red' over and over again. It wasn't unusual to see this kind of behavior from Hunter, but the trigger seemed to be the red ocean, so all three of the others guided, coaxed, and shoved him back into the dark of the trees where the ocean couldn't be seen.
"There now, it's alright love." purred Call, rubbing his head against Hunter's, who had started muttering nonsense, his eyes gone unfocused. "It's alright. We're here with you. Calm down." He gave his head a soft lick, echoed by the other two.
"Don'tcha go losin' yer head now." soothed Luck, bodily putting himself over Hunter, and draping his paws over his back until the pink cat settled on his stomach. Once that was done, he put more of his weight on him, grooming his ears as he went. "Calm on down now, ya' daft creature. We're here."
While Poison wasn't one for shows of affection, he did care for Hunter. However, his 'help' was less physical, and more practical. With a practiced paw, he drew out some leaves from a pouch he carried around his chest, and waved them in front of Hunter's nose. The strong scent made the unstable cat sneeze, which broke the steel hold his mind had on his body, and let him slowly relax.
Hunter's tail stopped bristling at about the same time his breathing returned to normal, and he stopped chanting nonsense. It took him a fair few minutes to focus, but eventually he looked around as though seeing this part of the trees anew, and took a deeper, calming breath. One ear relaxed forward, then the other as the fur around his neck and back also slowly went down. Looking across at his boyfriends, he gave a wan smile. "Sorry." he murmured. "I guess something triggered me."
"Thas' okay. We jus' won't go that way again." Luck said with a smirk. "S'all good. You ain't bother us none."
Call rubbed his face hard against Hunters, and licked his ear. "We're just glad you're okay. That was scary. Did you see something in your head again?" His own head canted to one side. "Something scary enough to cause you to... well... go wild?"
The pink cat shook his head a bit. "I saw something, but I don't think that's what triggered me." he said, starting to groom his right front paw now that he was stable again. "I saw... a wide-open dark space, and a dark person - person, not cat - huddled up in the middle of it. Like they were hurt or sick or something. Shivering. Then it kind of all went dark, and... yeah - I woke up. What did I say?"
"Red." Poison answered. "Over and over again. As though your mind could not for the life of you let go of the color." He furrowed his brow, concerned. "It was as though that color had taken ahold of you. It was... odd."
Hunter stood, carefully, once Luck let him up, and sat, still grooming his paw. "At least I wasn't spouting off about my old... habits." He snorted. "Last time I did that, Viperstar had me resting for days." Giving a hesitant glance up through the trees, he caught sight of the ocean again - but nothing triggered him this time, and he could look at it with the same eyes as his partners. "What do you think is causing that?"
The tortie pulled both ears forward, and looked at the ocean as well, with its increasingly-red hue. "... I... am not sure. But it was not this way yester-morning when I rose to patrol." His tail flicked just the once. "It might not be prudent to venture toward the sea until we have a good idea of what has caused this... anomaly."
"Y'got that right!" Luck stretched out his paws, and clawed lightly at the ground. "I ain't lettin' any o' ya near that thing, less'n I'm sure it ain't gonna spawn nothin' to hurt ya." One ear dipped. "I ain't jokin'. That ain't right. It ain't natural, and it surer'n heck ain't friendly-lookin'."
Call wound between his boyfriends, rubbing his tail up under each of their chins, and offering soft purrs of reassurance. "Then none of us will go in that direction, loves. I see no reason why Viperstar would expect us to risk our lives unnecessarily. Especially recently, when he's been so contemplative about the expansion of our borders. Intentional or not."
"Then we'll just head back to him and tell him what's going on. I figure if he knows, then maybe he won't send quite so many patrols out near the ocean." Hunter stated, giving his head a rough shake to clear out the residual echoes of whatever nightmare he'd witnessed. "It's our duty to tell him, isn't it?"
"I wouldn't say duty so much as common sense." Call agreed. "But let us head back. On the way, we can help you piece together these visions you've been having before your attacks. If that's something you wanted to do?"
Hunter nodded. "Yeah... yeah, that would be a good idea. I never told Viper I was having visions or anything - just the three of you." One of his own ears went back in embarrassment. "I should maybe have shared that info with the rest of the class, but forgive me if suddenly mentioning 'hey, I see things before I go crazy' is a lot to say to someone you barely know, and don't trust not to laugh in your face."
Luck nodded a bit. "Mmmmhmmm. I ain't one t' judge a book n' all that, but I ain't got a CLUE what he'd say t' that. S'probably best that ya told us first at least."
Poison, Call, and Luck all surrounded Hunter as they turned and started the walk back. It wasn't far, but they weren't moving near as fast returning as arriving. This time, Luck lead them around the berry bushes, not through them. He kept close, so the others could follow. None of them were as experienced in scouting as he was. Hence why he usually lead them around.
"We will start with your first.. 'vision' if we are to use that term. You spoke of a large, red lake, with a black box sitting upon an island in the middle of it. The ground was black, I believe you said?" Poison kept pace with Hunter, staying to his left side just in case this walk down memory lane triggered another attack.
For a moment, the pink cat hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah. Big black box sitting in the middle of a red lake on a black island. It was raining in that vision. Hard. With red lightning too. No fog like there is here, and no red moon, just... darkness, and regular-looking stars, and that box, and the water." His tail lashed hard. "I could hear crying, but I wasn't sure where it was, and then I woke up to Luck pushing me down."
"Was th' only way to getcha t' stop screamin'." Luck said matter-of-factly. "I'll do it again, if'n it helps ya."
"Thank you, Luck, my love. But anyway. Second vision was... black, black - inside that box, I think, but it might have been somewhere else. I couldn't see anything, but I could hear laughing. All around me. Swirling like a physical wave. Lots and lots of voices. Just laughing and laughing." He screwed up his face in concentration. "I thought I heard that crying again, but it was too loud to really pinpoint it. Felt like I was... running? Moving fast? Moving scared. Like my heart was racing and my mind was racing, and everything in me wanted to run run run... But then that one was over too."
"These dreams seem to have a similar theme." Call said with a nod of his head. "They're all dealing with black, red, and crying. Laughing, too? Could you tell if it was raining in that one?"
"It was. I felt it on my face." Hunter said. "The third one too. That one was the scariest one. There were... things in the darkness. Coming after me. But I was rooted to the spot. I wasn't... it wasn't that I was glued or tied or anything, it was just... I was so tired, and my heart was pounding again, and my head ached like mad. It was like that moment right before you faint, but went on and on... And the things were getting closer, I could FEEL their claws stretched out to take some sort of anger out on me. I knew they were angry, I just didn't know why. It was... yeah, raining then, too. Harder. Lightning. Thunder. Like it was mirroring my physical state. All wet and icky, and can't move. And all the while, there was screaming in the background... and crying too."
He looked up, noting they were right next to the broken funhouse mirror that marked the path toward 'home'. He turned that way, and the rest of the cats followed suit. They were a well-oiled machine at this point, supporting and following. Leading and giving. Each had something to provide, and none took too much or too little. Hunter was glad for the balance they had, that helped settle his own imbalances. His tail flicked again. "And then this one. The fourth vision. With the blackness and the curled up human." One ear dipped. "I don't understand."
For a moment, no cat said anything, then Poison spoke up. "... I think I may understand some of what is going on. Call was right in that there seems to be a theme to your visions. I think that perhaps this... figure you keep seeing? It may be Chroma. He has communicated with us before through dreams, and speaks to us through our own minds. I do not see why the ability should be one-sided. Although if it IS Chroma within the chasm of your dreams, then... He is in a sorry state indeed."
Hunter's ears pulled right back again. "If that's Chroma - i.e. the one keeping this place together, we might not have a place much longer. He's in super bad shape. The crying? The screaming? The laughter? The darkness and the red? That doesn't exactly say 'sunshine and rainbows' does it?"
"No. I am afraid it does not." Poison's expression turned thoughtful. "It might be best for us to bring this up to Viperstar, as well as what we are considering it is in relation to. Maybe he could offer us more insight... After all, he and Chroma seem to have a somewhat working relationship. At least a stronger one than that of ours."
All four cats made to move forward again, before all four jumped back in unison as a cyan-blue box appeared out of nowhere, seemingly flickering with the stuff the world was made of in a glitchy sort of fashion. They stepped back even further as the blue box seemed to dissolve into waves and numbers, leaving behind the crouched figure of a black cat with... artificial limbs, and an eye that glinted with an intense flicker that told to that, too, being artificial. Hunter stepped back another foot as the black cat shook and shuddered as though experiencing a fit, and then shot straight to a standing position.
"Reboot! Reboot! C-C-Code C-Corrupt! Corruption Detected! System Drive Rewrite? Rewrite Negative. Reboot!" the strange cat said with a voice that oscillated between too-high, and too-low rapidly, interspersed with an echo of static. "Reboot! Reboot Complete! Reset Parameters. Negative Space Integrated. Voidspace Permitted. Voidspace Integrated." One ear flicked in a strange fashion, and the cat opened his good eye.
".... and that kids, is why we don't attempt to program a jump-shuttle sixty feet in the air, using a corrupt code-disk, an onboard USB, a rouge AI, and a prayer." The male shook his head, and flicked another ear, this time more naturally. "I'd love to ask the name of the bus that hit me, but I'm pretty sure I know who, what, and where it was. I'm dead, aren't I?"
Call stared at the stranger, and lifted a paw. "... Yeah. We all are. Sort of. Name's Love at Night's Call. You are? Don't try your real name, it won't work."
"Duly noted." The cat nodded, and canted his head to the side as though he were listening to something. "... Ha. Really? Nice. Nice. Okay, I'm Glitch in the System then. Call me Glitch, I think. Nice to meet you." He offered his artificial paw for a greeting.
Hunter offered his own paw to meet Glitch's, even though the motion was odd. "Nice.. to meet you too? I think?" The look he was giving to Glitch was echoed on his partners' faces. ".... I think you'd better come back to base with us and meet Viperstar."
"Hang on just a tic." Glitch canted his head to one side, and the blue-cybernetics in his artificial eye flashed red for a moment, then green. "There we go. Did an update. Right. So apparently this whole place is on a Voidplane. Not that you see too many of those, but I've seen plenty in cyberspace." His tail flicked, and he looked behind him to watch it. "... A cat? Intriguing. Color me interested. No kind of afterlife I ever imagined, but it's better than being a vegetable at the very least. We all gotta go sometime, right? Why not into the body of a cat."
"You are one strange fella." Luck said with a smirk. "My kinda fella. C'mon, Viper'll flip kits when he lays his eyes on you. I ain't sure which future-hole you dropped outta, but that's some mighty-fine hardware. Maybe it'll come in handy or somethin'."
"If you all would kindly move your tails, I believe it would be productive to bring these findings - and this new friend - to Viperstar post-haste. Thus. Enough with the chit-chat!" Poison called from in front of them. All four of the other cats hurried up to enter the big-top together. Eager, and wary, to share the news of Hunter's visions, and to introduce their leader to the strange new friend.
"You'd better not be kidding. You know I hate kidding." The pink cat sighed, and moved faster, looking behind him just once to make sure that the other two of their little group were keeping up. "Poison, Call, c'mon. I can't keep looking behind me to make sure you haven't got your tails stuck in a berry bush." Call stared at the stranger, and lifted a paw. "... Yeah. We all are.
