Viperstar was in the throes of a dream that bordered upon a nightmare, reliving his past.
"You remind me of your mother." his father had said, slinging his stethoscope around his neck. Something about the way he said the words made Ian shiver. "She was moronic too. Stay here, don't even breathe if you think it will bring trouble down on me."
As Ian grew, his demeanor soured into something approaching cruel. Without the negative influence of his father, he made plans that put himself first, and others last. But it never brought happiness or fulfillment.
His outlook only improved when his plans started to include others. Valisk, Trek, Laur, and Sendis. It wasn't love necessarily. Something akin to family. Somewhat above the kind of lackluster life that he'd been leading up until he met them. They had their share of setbacks. Things that they faced together. By the time Sendis died - poisoned by rivals - Ian would say that he probably felt... regret for his death. But never love.
At least that's what he told himself. Something - love, despair, regret, anger, or all of these - drove Ian to madness. He blamed everything on his father, who still worked for the company StarTel as a researcher. Ian decided to do something drastic to deal with his grief, and his loneliness. He decided to blow it up.
Thus, his two-year plan began. Placing explosives. Learning schedules and rotations. Making absolute sure that his father would be there when he set things off. Lacing the entire building with wires and powders, and taking classes to make sure he knew what to destroy when, to eliminate his father's floor, squash it between two others before the building fell.
The building fell easily. He wanted them all to suffer. He wanted them all to die. Eagerly, he browsed for his father's name among the dead, finding it. Then - and only then, he ceased to resist they came to arrest him. He had done what he set out to do... so why didn't he feel sated?
He never did, after that. But his death - that had been a lie his addled brain made up. That family hadn't killed him - a massive explosion following an earthquake had brought the building down on him. Just as he had done to his father.
It was with that realization that the leader popped awake, eyes frantically scanning the surrounding faces. His group- all staring at him, with similar concern. His ears dipped. "I'm.... I'm fine." he stammered. "It was just a dream. Just... a dream..."
