Blanchard could just make out the tom's shape from across the border. He could already feel his own blood boiling, just at the implication of the man he so hated was so near, and yet, so out of reach.

"Blanchard, is that you? We haven't seen each other in years. How has life been treating you?"

"You say that as if you care."

Blanchard's sharp reply was met with a laugh. As usual, Char seemed in good spirits. It made Blanchard all the more angry.

"I do care to know how old friends are." Char said, his laugh subsiding as he stepped further into the light. Blanchard could just make out the scar that went through his ear and down onto his face. His paw twitched - for a moment he almost could feel the sensation he'd felt giving that blow himself. He thought it would comfort him, to see the lasting impression of his own paws; yet it did not. That made him angrier, and he snarled and drew back slightly as the outlaw neared.

"One step further, you blaggard, and I'll give you a nicer scar than that!"

"Ah yes! The remnants of our last encounter." Char responded, lifting his own paw to trace his toes down the mark. His voice took a more sullen tone as he added. "You must be pleased to see it did not heal, brother. It'll work as a reminder, just as you said it should. A reminder for the reason I cannot step over this wall, however short it may be, and join you back in our country."

"... You wouldn't come back even if you could." Blanchard responded. His meow seemed choked, almost; he felt a wave of shame as he was reminded to be related to this criminal.

"You know that's not true."

"I know no such thing." Blanchard scoffs. Turning up his nose, his eyes shone in the light of the streetlamp as he added angrily. "You hate our nation, you hated our king and you hated your family - this is all proved by what you tried to do. You coward. You monster."

"Yes, I did have grief against our royal house. But I never hated my own people, Blanchard, how many times have I tried to say-"

"Say what?! That you were framed?" Blanchard spat, not giving his brother time to finish. Char took a step further into the shadows, his eyes narrowing as Blanchard kept on speaking. "I can't believe, even after your exile, even after they showed you - disloyal trash like you - mercy... that you say you didn't do it!"

"I wanted them destroyed." Char whispered. "But I would not go to that extent. At least - not who I was then. Perhaps now, with the life I lead, it is different."

"Making a threat, are we, Mr. Renshaw?"

Char didn't respond. He simply turned to leave.

Blanchard felt a twinge of remorse, and yet - and yet he still couldn't forgive the man who'd ruined their family's name.
