The sun was slowly setting behind the silhouette of Fallen Oaks Farm. Most of the volunteers had retured for the night in hotels outside of a nearby town, but some rested in their cars, or even set up cots in their trailer. You had signed up for night check that morning so you still had an hour of walking before your day was done.
The smell of manure and infection had slowly dispersed throughout the past couple of days after each horse had been cleaned and cared for. No one had bothered trying to fix the barn as it would probably collapse next time there was a bad storm. Now police caution tape had been strung around it, hooked onto rusty nails and shards of glass, warning any who may wish to enter. You'd already been inside many times to make sure there weren't any leftover horses, so you decide to not return again. It was just a reminder of the sick conditions the poor horses of Fallen Oaks had to endure for who knows how long. But as you turned back to the paddocks of calm and mostly clean horses, a smile dances at the corners of your lips.
Volunteers had appeared out of the woodwork to support these poor creatures. Trailers from all over had traveled long distances just to clean and care for them all. It was a pleasant reminder of how strong people were when they came together. Instead of the overly packed paddocks with mares screaming for their foals that was ensuing on the first day, now many of the horses had found homes. Only a couple remained, sitting in their areas. But these horses at least looked happy. They all did, actually. Some of them had closed eyes and droopy ears as they slept, others still grazed long into the night.
A movement in the corner of your eye caught your attention so you turned to see two of the last foals playing while their mothers watched through slit eyes, barely staying awake. You walk over to rest your chin on your arms which you drape lazily over the fence. The two foals, one looking more like a yearling, see you and trot excitedly over. Their mother's heads raise, still weary of humans (one of the reasons they had not yet been adopted) but they starting resting again quickly after seeing how you are only feeding clover. You smile at them, maybe at the end of all this they’d find a home where they can go through retraining.
After a while of feeding clover to the foals you walk back to your trailer where you’ve set up a cot and sleeping bag. Half asleep you pull out your phone to check the news. “Man Responsible for Fallen Oaks Farm in Custody!” That message is the last thing you see before your eyes close to sweet dreams of happy horses.
•••
And that’s the end of the Fallen Oaks Farm event! There are still some horses up for adoption so make sure to check them out, but at this point most of the horses have been rehomed. I hope you all enjoyed the event! Make sure to mark ERRP’s main page and join the discord for updates on future events. Happy riding!
