Redwood stopped thinking to himself. Pebblefall noticed his hesitation and came to a stand still just mouse lengths from the tom.
"You ok redwood? It'll be dark soon and we still have a long ways to walk before we make it back to camp."
Redwood paused, looked at the blue she cat, then softly began speaking
"We was never mean to meet, then we meet who knows why. Just some-cat sweet passing by." redwood licked his chest nervously.
Pebblefall chuckled.
"Fadedstar saw you in her dreams and brought you to the clan. That's 'why' if you really need a reason and flattery will get you no where". she joked.
Redwood took a step forward. Not towards pebblefall but just a little past her.
"She gave me something to believe in." redwood now sat in silence waiting for something, anything to happen. Meanwhile pebblefall sat with her mouth hung at his awkward yet hopeful confession. Pebblefall had thought of him as a close friend up until now. Maybe there was something there? She inched closer until their pelts brushed lightly.
"From the moment I found you, I thought I knew what love was. Now I'm seeing what is true. That love will do what it does. The world finds ways to sting you, like how I thought you were more interested in applebriar, that hurt a bit. Then one day decides to bring you something to believe in". pebblefall had blurted before thinking what she was saying. She didn't want to chase him off by saying too much. Redwood must have understood this silent message.
"One moon may be forever, but that's ok."
Pebblefall felt her pelt grow hot. Most toms didn't want to stick around for a moon let alone forever. She knew that.
"Redwood, I will take you as my mate. Just please don't call me sweet ever again or I'll have to smother you with this moss." pebblefall pointed to a small green clump with one paw. Redwood looked at her with unbelieving eyes.
"And if I'm gone tomorrow what was ours still will be?"
"If you leave you had better come back for one thing. I'm a one tom kinda gal. But yes, I will still be here when you come back." pebblefall licked his cheek affectionately.
"Do you know what I believe in?" he asked, his voice as soft as a new born kitten's fluff.
"Starclan I suppose." she meowed back unsure where he was going with this.
"Look into my eyes and see" redwood looked to her. His eyes as round as a full moon. When she looked at him she felt his love for her. He didn't need to say it out loud for her to know.
The two cats sat in silence for many moments before pebblefall gave a startled gasp.
"We still have to be back to camp before moonhigh! Let's go" she moved as quickly as a rabbit chased by a fox. Redwood stared after her a moment before running to catch up with the she-cat. He knew they would stay together forever. Moss isn't such a bad name for a kit now that redwood thinks about it.
