Kalons-- a species with soft manes and even softer hearts.
Monitored in forests across the globe for years, these animals
have recently been declared naturally tame as well as sapient.
Scientists are asking the general population to consider adopting
Kalons for further study in their capabilities of intelligence.

Their shining tails are used for identification and showing off,
which is helpful when spotting another Kalon from afar. This
association with other Kalons is why they are head-over-heels
for any shiny or colorful item that they come across!

"Oh, the Rafflesia arnoldii of course! They're better known as the "corpse lily" as they apparently smell terrible! Some have told me that they smell almost like corpses, although I'm not sure what either smells like. You see, I lack a sense of smell due to a health problem from when I was a young child."



"This here is my beloved, Bau, which means stinky in Indonesian! He's a Rafflesia arnoldii, which are found natively in Sumatran forests here, although I haven't seen any others just quite like him! He was part of a section of the forest that was going to be taken down, sadly, but I decided to take this little one home and grow him here! He's been doing a great job so far!

People say he smells kinda weird, and I don't know for sure, but people definitely seem to not like him. It makes me kinda sad, but at least he knows I love him! Maybe not everyone out there cares about him, but I know I do, and maybe if you can get past his smell, you will too!"

I knew before they told me. I don't think Leonie knew. She sat next to me, clenching my hand, as the news was delivered. I was calm.

"They're not going to get better."

My eyes. My vision. It had been growing steadily blurrier for weeks now. Leonie was convinced it would be nothing, but I knew.

She cried while the doctor spoke about degenerative eye diseases, and how they can come on fast, and affect people at younger ages. Glasses would only help for so long.

We rode in silence on the way home.
She never let go of my hand.

I measured time only by the decline of my vision. I couldn't see the numbers properly anyway. All I could see were shapes and colors. I told Leonie it made me feel better, being able to touch things that felt nice. It relaxed me.

That day, she bought me a Lamb's Ear plant.

The leaves were so soft, very matching to the name. Silky, almost. Like it was covered in fur. I could almost imagine I was touching a cat, or something of the like. I held it in my lap, cradling the pot with one hand, while the other stroked the leaves. It made my fingertips tingle.

She bought me other things. Fluffy blankets. Knit sweaters. Merino wool scarves. Thick winter socks. Everything and anything that could help me feel better.

It was always the Lamb's Ear that helped me feel the most at ease. Leonie would tell me when new leaves had started to grow, and it made me smile, holding this living, breathing part of nature. Even if my eyes grew progressively weaker, my plant grew progressively stronger.

Leonie's hand on mine. My other hand stroking the soft leaves. My little feeling of 'okay'.

She knows its spring when the honeysuckles begin to bloom. A sickeningly sweet scent blankets the warming air like a pillow, soft and inviting. Their little blossoms, ranging from powder pink to a yellowed linen white, reach up for the spring sun with wispy petals and thin tongues of pollen, a welcome sight for winter-weary bumblebees and hummingbirds. Neighbors call them invasive and try to rid their yards of them with weed killers and pruning shears. But her yard is full of them. They eat up the Southern sun like her, relish in the humidity of spring and summer like her, and look especially pink through the rose-colored glasses she sees the world through. Her mother showed her the many things to do with their fragrant blossoms, how to pluck them from their stems and suck the sugary nectar out of their bells, or how to mix them into an intoxicatingly sweet mixture of flower and lemonade. While she enjoys the vernal treat the blossoms provide her while they bloom, she appreciates even more what her many honeysuckle bushes have turned her yard into. A haven for all creatures who seek sweet things like her, butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and their ilk. A rosy haven from the outside world where everything is sweet like nectar and constantly doused in the enchanting aroma of the honeysuckle blossoms. It can be forever spring, forever lovely in her microcosm of sugared nectar and powder pink.

What's their favorite plant? (300 word max!): Maisy’s favourite plant is the simple tulip. She loves that they can be so many colours and they’re simple design is so pleasing to the eye. Mostly, Maisy loves tulips because they remind her of her grandmother. When she was a little girl, she used to help her grandma garden ALL the time. Grandma would always pick out the flowers and pick their locations but Maisy always got to pat them into the earth. It was a special time and great fun. Tulips were always around her Grandmas pond and that’s one of the reasons Maisy loves tulips so much.
