“Mama always said to keep things you love not only in your heart, but in mind at all times too. She made this double-chain charm necklace for me... I received it three days before she passed. Each charm holds special meaning... it would be silly if they didn’t. Heh.

First and foremost, the circle loop. It represents everybody and their actions all being connected to each other. It only takes one person to inspire hundreds of thousands of people, and then those people can inspire many more. Great leaders arise and inspire new generations, and those new generations inspire the generations after them. There is a continuance in the good we do, the continuance is that circle which always comes back around again. The circle loop is there to remind me to be careful, as my actions affect everything around me and everything beyond that too.


Another one of the bigger ones is the blue eye, which has countless meanings. Take in everything before it is too late. People are always watching, so use those eyes to your advantage. You might see something differently than someone else, but that doesn’t mean either of you are necessarily wrong. All these meanings are good, yeah, though none of those are the reason for the eye to be a main charm. Mama wrote a song just for me. She sang it to me every night when I was little, no matter how bad things were or how busy she was. There was one line in particular that was especially beautiful, it was our favorite. “Stand strong alongside what you believe, even if you cannot see because the blue eye brings hope.”

The first small charm would be the seahorse. I was recently reunited with a cousin of mine. Because of a tear in our family, most of us don’t know our full family, and thus coincidentally my cousin shares my name, Kai. Well, thats his actual name; Kai is just what people call me- short for Malakai. It turns out he is a pretty cool dude. We have such different life stories to tell, but we have so much in common. Favorite books, scents, least favorite celebrities. Stuff like that. We also have really similar quirks or oddities we share, such as the fact that we both prefer flavored milk with cereal (chocolate or strawberry).

The next small charm is the linked hearts. Those have a very simple yet sweet answer. Love is strong, love finds a way, but hate never prevails. The two hearts represent the connection and the bond love creates.

Next we have the angel. The angel is to remind me of Mama. She knew she didn’t have long, and knowing Mama, there is no way she would not have included herself on the necklace. Mama reminded me a lot of important things, like how being able to do good things is a blessing and how just having food on the table every night is a gift.

The most... out of place... kinda, uh, weird looking charm is the bulky blank dogtag. It is very different than the others, but the meaning definitely fits along side the rest. Most tags are worn by pets. They are enscribed with their name, owner's phone number, and address. Some people wear them too with their name or initals on them. The blankness of the tag reminds me that nothing is definite. Other than death, nothing is forver; you can choose to change things you are unhappy with. If you dislike your name, change it. If you hate your neignborhood, strive to move. If you cannot stand your job, work to get a new one. Follow your dreams, do what you want, nothing is set in stone, but also be wary of what others say, because it also might not be definite. Never take someone's fact as absolute, you never know who could be lying.”

Turq could remember the first time he saw the scarf. He was laying on a bed of moss waiting for the nurse to come tend to his wounds as she did daily. She hurried into the cave, apologizing to one of the other nurses for being so late and around her neck was a thick grey and brown scarf to help with the cold. It was mostly tucked into her jacket but she quickly removed both to come tend to him. He was here because of an accident where he fell and became tangled in some wire fencing, leaving serious wounds mostly around his neck. The nurse replaced his bandages and he frowned as they stuck out against his darker fur. He was embarrassed as he noticed other residents of the hospital staring at him and his bandaged neck. He dropped his head and refused to look up, not wanting to see all the people gawking at him.

A gentle paw lifted his chin so that he was looking into the eyes of the nurse. She seemed saddened by his embarrassment, “Don’t pay any mind to them. They don’t know what you have been through. Keep your head up. You will heal soon enough and then there won’t be anything for them to see.”

Turq smiled at her and did indeed heal quickly, but not as fast as he would like. He still couldn’t get over how everyone stared at him, especially when he would go outside of the hospital cave for fresh air. Even with his wounds healing, the nurse could tell he wasn’t truly improving and noticed he remained in his bed more and more to avoid the curious looks from outside.

She usually read to him at night, as he was still just a small viscet, with no one there to care for him besides the nurses. This night however, she brought him a gift as well to hopefully raise his spirits. As she sat down beside him to read, she delicately wrapped her scarf around his neck. The scarf was large and almost buried his face in the folds, but with some adjusting it fit perfectly around his neck to hide the bandages there. With a simple act, the nurse returned Turq’s confidence and his healing was remarkable. Even after the bandages were removed and his fur grew in enough to hide the scars, Turq refused to go anywhere without the scarf around his neck.

It had been a long time since Turq had thought about that day, but he had never forgotten the nurse who had given him the best gift he could ever had imagined, the confidence to heal and life his life again. He had gone to visit her once, after he was released from the hospital but she was no longer there. He was determined however to find her again, and thank her for what she had done for him and someday he would.
