Dingo felt relief and excitement course through him, and already the fear from the dog attack was draining out of him. The combination of emotions was enough to set him shaking slightly. “You do exist…” he said, awestruck.
“You’re lucky we do, or you would both have been lunch for those dogs,” one of the tortoiseshell cats said sternly. She had a badly bitten back leg, and blood glistened on her shoulder. “Kittypets, are you? No wonder you got into trouble. A warrior would have smelled those dogs long before they were in sight,” she said disapprovingly. Dingo was slightly offended by her words and his fur bristled in response. He felt Holly step closer to him, her pelt brushing his own, and he knew that, like him, she was starting to worry that these cats wouldn’t take them after all.
The darker tortoiseshell, Gentlestar, exchanged a look with the grey-and-white tom beside her, then spoke with a frown. “They’re only little, Morningstar. Even our own apprentices could have gotten into their situation.”
Morningstar looked the two of them over. Perhaps it was the sight of their wounds and Dingo’s shaking form that made her soften. “You’re right. They’re still young. What are your names?” she asked them gently. Dingo glanced at Holly, and gave her a reassuring lick on the cheek before replying. “I’m Dingo,” he said firmly. “I’m Holly,” his sister said, her own voice strong and clear, though he could feel her trembling slightly.
Morningstar gave them a small smile. “I’m Morningstar, of Creekclan. And Gentlestar has introduced herself. Our territories are next to each other.” She turned and pointed out the other cats present – Koalapelt, Bluestorm and Alfie. “So. You want to join us?” she asked, getting straight to the point.
Dingo and Holly exchanged a nervous look – “Yes,” they said together. “We thought… Well, that we were meant to be wild cats,” Holly said, echoing what Dingo had said when they set off. Morningstar frowned slightly, but Gentlestar was smiling in an encouraging way. “If you still want to join after that run-in with the dogs, then I don’t see why not,” Gentlestar said. “But it’s dangerous out here,” she added with concern. Morningstar’s tail tip twitched, but she only said, “Whose clan will they join, then?”
Gentlestar looked at them thoughtfully. “Would you mind if I took them in, Morningstar?” she said. Morningstar shared a look with Koalapelt, but Dingo couldn’t tell what it meant. “Even though they’re kittypets… if they managed to evade the dogs so long they must have some potential. I don’t want this battle to have been for nothing,” Morningstar said with a grimace, holding her bitten leg off the ground. “We fought just as you did, Gentlestar. Isn’t it fair that we each gain a clan member from this?”
Gentlestar nodded, though she looked as though she didn’t really want to split the pair. “Alright. Which of you would like to come with me?” she said to the siblings. Dingo gave Holly a nudge on her shoulder. “You go,” he said quietly. Holly looked at him sadly. “I wish we didn’t have to split up,” she said. “Me too. But we’ll see each other often, I’m sure of it. They said the clans are next to each other,” he reassured her. Holly walked up to Gentlestar, and Dingo turned to face Morningstar. “I’ll go with you,” he said, though he wasn’t sure he liked the she-cat very much. He just hoped that one day she wouldn’t see him as just a soft kittypet.
“Welcome to the Clan.”
