She had one destination; it meant a lot to her and one other viscet. I’m not letting him take this away from me.
Red wasn’t the most intelligent she’s met, but he wasn’t dumb either. I doubt he could figure out what the signs meant...I’m far ahead of him! Luce clicked her teeth beneath her mask as she continued on. Her eyes glowed gently, hardly illuminating the mask. Even if she did have her cloak and mask, she still needed to remain mostly hidden from curious gazes. Going through a crowd was a risk, but it was a risk she was willing to take. No other street lead up to the mountain she was heading towards, and she had little time to reach the peak. That goal was driving her on.
Legends say that at the top of the mountain lies a cave housing the powerful and valuable medallion of Midas. Rumors are spread that wearing it will grant you immense power and insight - it was a treasure many hunters have sought for, but only Luce and Red have made it far enough to have a chance. Both viscets have fought hard to even find the signs leading up to the very mountain it resides on.
Ever since they were young visclings, Red has been Luce’s rival. At first, it was all fun and games in a simple friendship in a simple life. As they both grew older, their rivalry became stronger. They both ended up wanting to be treasure hunters, which only furthered the rivalry. Anything Luce sought to get ahold of, Red would go for it as well. There was one thing that irritated her more than that, though - and that was that Red always seemed to be one step ahead. As their careers continued, they sought after stealing more and more valuable treasures, creating a bounty on both of their heads.
At one point, Luce managed to surpass Red. That was when all of the tables sharply turned, and what was left of their friendship quickly faded away.
She climbed up the mountain path as the wind grew stronger, chilling her fur. Her cloak left most of her body warm, though; the headpiece shielded all but her unforgiving and judging eyes. Luce was near the peak now, and her will remained strong as ever. Red is not going to take this from me.
Luce finally lifted herself up over the last edge, a path that only lead to one singular cave. There was no missing it; the only way back down was the way she came. The opening was surrounded by spikes, shielding the edge of the mountain off from all who dared to reach the top. After a moment’s hesitation, she darted inside. The cave shielded her from the wind, which was something she was grateful for. When she reached the end, the treasure was all that was on her mind.
Now, it was right before her very eyes.
The gold medallion glimmered despite there being no light from any outside source; instead, it was lighting up the cave in waves of golden yellow light. Just looking at it, Luce could tell it was hefty, combined with the strong yet thin golden chain meant for the wearer’s neck. A wicked grin crossed her face as she removed the mask. Her amber eyes were boring into the object, and it finally was all hers. Stepping forward, she snatched it from the pedestal it floated upon, and went to place it over her head when a voice stopped her.
“Are you really sure you want to do that?”
She turned, slowly and menacingly towards it’s source as she held the necklace between her paws. As she began to answer, she felt a sudden pain within her throat causing her to wheeze and cough. Her breath was turning gold, smoke pouring out from her jaws.
“That’s a cursed object, Luce. Once you wear it, your life will change for the worse.”
Her wicked grin returned on her face, and slowly, she placed it over her head. Her whole body seemed to freeze, becoming rigid for just a moment; before she could move yet again. Every breath was a little more labored, as more gold dust left her throat. A laugh escaped, echoing eerily through the cave as it did. “You’re only saying that so I can give it up. Don’t think I can’t see through your greed, Red.” More gold dust began to fill the cave, beginning to swallow up Luce’s body. “Wait-!” Red called, but when the dust cleared,
she was gone.
