Luciana had never appreciated the koi that swam in the pond near the castle, they had company, but neither had she appreciated anything but herself. she was selfish, and hated almost everyone, she was good with being lonely. Luciana knew nothing but herself, and the servants, she barley saw her parents, nor had she any siblings. Luciana was lonely, but had yet to notice it, her parents took her out to the village one day, she say young kalons enjoying themselves in others presence, she was so confused at this, why did someone need anyone other than themselves, it seemed odd at first, then she felt something that she hadn't felt before, jealousy. Luciana ordered them to bring her back at once, she hated the village people, and her constant loneliness.

Luciana grew older, and her loneliness grew, but to her, it faded. Luciana's mother died, and she felt nothing, no sympathy, she was lonely, and she had yet to know the feeling of sympathy, or friendship. Thats when one day she met someone, a boy, the same age as her, he looked like the koi in the pond, she snapped at him, waiting for him to tell her who she was, he said nothing, only laughed and beckoned her to play with him, she was confused as he started to run, waiting for her to chase him. Reluctantly she chased after him, and that day, her loneliness truly, evaporated. The boy began visiting often, and she began to call him 'koi' as he looked like the strange fish in the pond, and koi were a known symbol for balance and accomplishing things, she had accomplished her life dream, to be happy. Koi began to change her, she was more friendly, caring, and people began to not ignore her, or blindly serve her, but they began to like her. Luciana was no longer lonely, no longer a selfish, unemotional girl, she was loved, and happy.

Luciana went to go tell Koi how thankful she was for meeting him, how she had changed, and she was no longer lonely. She went to the small pond with the fish, expecting to see his smile as she arrived, but he wasn't there, neither was his scent, she was heart-broken, and then she finally understood. She started down into the pond, and smiled sadly, "Thank you," she whispered.

it is true that most of the time koi fish are thought of as yin and yang.
          symbols of love and peace.

          diary entry one,
i met this really cute girl today. she was so kind too! i think i've fallen in love even though we've
just met! i can't wait to talk to her tomorrow! maybe i'll share my food with her?
          -ren

          diary entry two,
i saw her again today! and this time she had flowers in her hair! i thought i was going to die by
how cute she was! i think i even saw her blush when i complimented her too! but now that i'm
home i can notice something forming on my back! i'm not sure what it could be! besides that,
          we're meeting again tomorrow!
          -ren

          diary entry three,
today was such a fun day! me and her both played together in the flower fields and guess what!!!
SHE CONFESSED TO ME!!! she said she thought i was really handsome and very sweet! i'm so happy!
i also told her my feelings too and she gladly accepted them. does this mean we're dating?
the mark on my back seems to be growing too! maybe i'll get it checked out at the doctor..
it almost looks like it's making the shape of a fishy!
          -ren

          diary entry four,
it's been a few days hasn't it!? me and her are doing really well though! she even gave me a
kiss on the cheek today! how lucky am I!!? i think this is absolutely fate!
...maybe someday we will even make a family!
the markings on my back haven't seemed to grow anymore since two days ago!
i wonder what it means! it's definitely the shape of a fish! perhaps a koi fish?
          -ren

          diary entry five,
wow.. it's been about a year now since i've written in my diary!
but guess what? me and her are still together and we're very happy!
the koi marking still hasn't went away but it hasn't done any harm
          so i'm not worried.
oh! i almost forgot! we live together now! we're mates and i'm
          sooooo happy!
i think this will be my last diary entry though! so goodbye!
          -ren

prompt; Order, obedience, and honor. The motto of the organized society that Sakuya lives in is hardly comforting. Restricting is not a colloquial term, even though city limits are highly patrolled and jobs are chosen without the input of the kalon. There would be uproars and revolutions, had there not been little to no factors that prohibited the kalon from doing certain tasks that would be illegal in other lands, such as reading or writing. This and the fact that very few even notice the inequality are enough to satisfy the ones who do.

Sakuya, an industrial worker, is one who is bothered by the unfairness, even though her three koi markings have gotten her far (one at her tail, two on opposing sides of the body). She would not be complaining, had they not set such a fine line between a koi-bearer and a fishie (a kalon without koi markings, respectively).

She claims that she is only praised highly because the koi markings are very rare. Few have them, and those who do rarely exceed two. The fish on her sides grant her extra provisions, luxuries such as salt and sugar, and an alleged higher rank in society, meaning more privileges and exclusive events held by city officials. The more koi, the more received.

Koi fish are traditional symbols of overcoming great adversity in Japanese culture. Officials claim that the fish, "appear out of the blue like a blessing from the gods," for those who make the effort in solving a large problem in the most creative, innovative, and beneficial ways.

Sakura earned her first when she was younger, fixing an unknown problem with the generators. The other two were given to her when she realigned machines for more efficient and inexpensive manufacturing, this being important considering her city's limited imports.

Everyone works towards a common goal to support the community with their wide variety of skills and jobs. Sakuya makes parts for the generators at the edge of the city with a few others, in hopes of making them more efficient. Those who refuse to work are punished. Sakuya's parents learned the hard way by going on strike. They are the main reason for her wanting to make a change to the pecking order displayed in her city.

The officials also remind everyone daily that, "food is limited, and so are creative ideas. Incentives are important for future success."

prompt;; (400/400) Fish and flowers were two things Adair had never seen within his life. He knew the color of metal, the smell of rust and smoke as it churned the still air, the sound of machines humming. Water flowed through pipes, but never into clear pools lined with plants and delicate flowers. The stories told of these places like they were lost treasures, things buried underneath the cities of metal and pipes, long forgotten and to never be seen again. Adair had come to long to see them, to hear the sound of birds singing and most especially, to see brightly colored fish swimming in crystal clear ponds.
Yet his longing was always set aside to his work: stitch by stitch he performed the craft of brocading – creating masterpieces within fabric to be hanged in the grand halls of those of high status and the mansions of dukes and duchesses. Such fabrics that would animate themselves underneath the light, portraying creatures long dead and known only by their drawings in books. They came to life for a moment, to graze at the sewn grass, to kick up the fabrics of dust.
This magic was one passed on through the generations, even back when the world still sung with the hum of insects and the smell of flowers hung in the air instead of smog. Adair’s mother had taught him the craft and she had told him of the ways these living images could be cast into more than just fabric – how her grandmother had carved the images into pots and plates, how her brother had painted pictures into books that were still being read today, and how she had learned to animate folded paper to resemble the things of the old world.
Adair had tried to carve the images into pots and plates, to paint pictures, and to animate the folded papers. Yet he could not. Instead he looked upon his own skin one dark night, and found it to be a canvas that would work just right: he etched into himself the image of flowers which floated just below the surface of his skin, then a fish who’s scales glistened and danced in the light, it moved across him as he if was a body of water himself. It was then that Adair’s longing seemed to lighten, for now what he always wished to see was a part of him.

I felt my heartbeat quicken with every inch we drove. Today we were being made to swim a mile. I was pretty scared, considering the last I swam I almost drowned. I hoped today would be different. I fished out a brush from underneath the seat. I kept brushing my green and pink fur, a nervous habit. It was a requirement that you swam a mile before going on to 8th grade, at my school anyways.
"We're here," Mom said. I nodded, and walked out the car door

    [five years ago]
"aulere, shh. it-it'll be okay. shh, shh, don't cry, for me?" a voice comforted. the voice was laced with fresh honey- it was so sweet and so dainty- it nearly made aulere sick. it made her insides churn with anger. "w-why do you care about me so much?! i've been nothing but nasty to you!" aulere's voice rose, her sobs growing fainter.

the other kalon looked taken aback by the outburst- scared. but a few moments later, her expression softened. it always did. "because, aulere, i love you," the kalon blinked, her voice still covered in that sweet, thick, honey."c-colette- y-you're- you're so confusing!" aulere shouted- but her tone was a bit mellow this time. colette always knew how to calm her down- and aulere hated that. colette shook her head lightly- "aulere, i want you to follow me, okay? i want to show you something," colette enjoined softly. aulere's expression morphed into that of an unsure one- skeptical. "o-okay. fine. i guess," she nodded slowly.

after a silent and rather awkward stroll- the pair finally arrived. colette stopped abruptly- right before a small pond. the pond was decorated with rocks- with weeds of all types growing in between the small crevices and cracks.

"y-you wanted to show me a pond?" aulere asked, confused. she tilted her head sideways. "a pond. i go here when- when my anxiety starts to get unbearable. i thought you'd like it- it's nice here, isn't it? look closely in the pond, though. you'll find something i think is of significance to you," colette babbled on- a mellow smile plastered on her face. aulere found herself drawing closer to the water, bending over and squinting. in the water- she could make out little fish. not just any fish, though. koi fish. the fish closely resembled the marking that covered half of her flank and her shine- the shine that had always been so special to herself. the only thing she truly liked about herself. and- in that moment- aulere smiled. the smile met her eyes- something that was quiet rare for someone like herself.

    [present]
to this day, aulere visits the pond frequently. although- she will not visit it without colette. she feels as if the pond shares the same significance with colette as it does to her- and that's what aulere loves.

when she was young, nekane was never very brave.

she was always the shy one, the cautious one, who pointed out the flaws in everyone's plans and never took risks.

needless to say, she was not very popular among the village children.

sometimes, when nekane was tired, bored, or just not feeling up to playing with the children (which was often; she was rather fragile and was often sick), she would slip away from her friends and go alone into the woods to her koi pond.

the koi pond was her secret. nekane delighted in having something special to herself and never shared it with her playmates. once, when she was very young, very stressed, and the children had been especially cruel, she ran crying into the wood to escape them. they made a half-hearted effort to find her before dark, but quickly gave up and went home. nekane had wandered deeper into the woods, with no particular direction in mind but a very definite need to be alone, and stumbled upon the koi pond.

it was very late, and long past time for her to be home, but nekane was enchanted. the waters of the pond, shrouded by darkness as they were, glowed dimly beneath the moon, and fireflies twinkled among the reeds at the edge. when she drew closer, she could see koi fish, glimmering like jewels as they drifted beneath the surface. as the night grew late, nekane curled up beneath the trailing limbs of an ancient willow, a sheltering veil from the outside world, and fell asleep, alone with the tree and the pond and the koi. when she woke up in the morning, she was back in her own bed, with no idea how she'd gotten there.

after the first night, nekane made several trips into the woods. she never had to search for the pond, because it always found her; she only had to walk in any direction and it would be there. whenever she was in need of a sanctuary from the harsh realities of the world, the pond would always be waiting.

this is what koi fish mean to her: tranquility. security. a safe haven, when no one else offers shelter. to nekane, koi fish will always bring a sense of peace and safety, as she once felt as she fell asleep beneath the willow as a child.

I could hear my heartbeat, the soft drumming against
my chest. I could feel the water lapping at my fur, the
waves gently washing over my paws. The steady waves,
rising and falling, rising and falling, rising.. and falling.
I wanted to stay forever, I could stay with the water, the
wind against my fur, the steadiness of the waves rising
and falling. Rising and falling. I knew I couldn't. My old
life called to me, was welcoming me with open arms. I
wanted to stay. The water was also calling, urging me
to stay with it. But I had to go, the soft water rushed up
against me, pulling me back into the clutches of the sea.
I couldn't, I had to leave! I was pulling myself away from it,
away from the waves, rising and falling against the soft
white sand. I looked away and back to my old life, my old
life.. The water called my name, but I wouldn't respond,
I had so much in life to look forward to. I looked back
behind me, pleading the water to let me go. Let me go..
The waves wouldn't let go. The water was angry. I looked
ahead of me. My future, and for a moment I felt as if I was
being watched. I turned my head and a small koi was
staring, it's black eyes staring straight into me. I closed
my eyes and looked away. The sand felt hot under my
feet. We will always have a place for you.. A feeling
of shock consumed my body. No. I whispered back.
The sea will not forget you. It whispered in my ear.
My heart pounded, my head throbbed. I couldn't do it
Crystalline. It whispered. I looked back, the koi was
still there. I turned around. The sea urged me to move
forward. The water called, it shouted in my ear. I moaned,
the waves lapped the shore faster and harsher. My paws
took a step toward the sea. My eyes turned back to the koi,
it seemed to be smiling. I shook my head, kois can't smile..
I looked down, and I remembered. The waves rising and
falling, rising and falling. I ran towards the water,
this is my home. I could be free here, I could be happy.
The sea welcomes you. The koi whispered.
Crystalline.

      "come now, venita."
her father's words echoed in her mind. today was the day, yes, today was the day her life was ending.
the princess stared into the koi pond, wrapping her long hair around her finger. well, she wasn't going to die, but any hopes of her becoming her own person was ending- ven was to become a bride to rich suitor who would cherish her only as a trophy. so pretty, so delicate- yet stuck swimming within the confines of a life she despised. just like the koi. she sighed, and turned away from the pond to follow her father.
standing angrily, he glared at his daughter. "learn to walk quicker, darling. the neighboring king and his son are waiting. you do remember them, don't you?" she nodded. how she longed to yell, to run from her miserable life and be able to be free.
"i'm sorry, i-i won't do it again." venita thought back to her fish. their gorgeous orange coloring, their gentle nature- she longed to stare blankly at them, to distract her from all of her troubles.
she'd had them for years, and she felt guilty for trapping them within the confines of her garden. it made her hypocritical, though, didn't it? she smiled, still walking behind her father in the long halls, their high ceilings and grand elegance overbearing. but venita had a faint glimmer of an idea that could buy her some precious time.
"forgive me, father, but i left something in my room. may i...?" he scoffed, and allowed her to go. scrambling as fast as her legs could take her, ven darted to her chambers. she stared into the intricate mirror by the door. with her long curls hiding her face and her trembling figure, she grimaced. she was pathetic. whatever she tried to do, she knew she'd always be trapped, like her fish.
but koi symbolized courage, and the willpower to do things. venita was always curious about the meaning of things, so the koi were no different. but could she be courageous? ven knew that if she was going to change her ways, this would be the only chance, the only hope. grabbing the small dagger she kept for protection, her long locks fell to the floor. messy, but it'd have to do. throwing on the most plain dress she could find, venita ran.
      and she never looked back.
