Haywing is fast, and he hadn’t exactly been trying to catch fish for very long at all before deciding to investigate the disappearance for himself. He’s quick enough to catch up to the cats who’d set out to investigate first thing, bringing up the rear and joining in with their irritated and confused grumblings. The idea of
otters, minks, other such creatures still circles in his brain, and he’s ready for that-
So to say he’s caught off guard when they instead encounter a
live, gigantic mother bear would be an understatement.
He makes it back to camp first, alerting the other campers and counselors for Birchmist. There were bears nearby. They’d have to share the fish for now.
He goes back to his fishing, and at least he has another large fish to show for it in the end. It was a frazzling day, but this more than makes up for it.
–
He returns to the lake days later, after an even more frazzling day. He… well, he can put it bluntly. He is not feeling his best after the fire scare yesterday, and he’s still a little shaken now.
For the first time since he’s gotten here, he truly misses
home.Maybe fishing would calm his nerves. He hopes so. He kind of doesn’t expect to catch more than a small fish in this state, and besides, it’d match to the pattern. Large fish, small fish, medium fish, loop back around again. He hopes he’s at least competent enough to not get trash. Maybe he’d be lucky and get a large fish again? Strengthen his spirits? But overall, he doubts it.

Heatherstar isn't a wise cat by any means. In fact, Haywing knows he's just a normal cat, stuck in a little over his head with the whole leadership thing. Oh, there was definitely a reason he'd been chosen by the stars, Haywing wouldn't go so far as to deny that - but the point was, he knows Heatherstar isn't always the wisest.
Still, he'd been on to something in the way he'd divided up jobs, and made Haywing messenger rather than hunter or scout. Of course, perhaps it was his loss for not making Haywing a hunter too, if his fish catching streak was anything to go by - but the point was, he hadn't been made a scout. It wasn't his job to look for things, to be the first set of eyes to notice when something was out of the ordinary. It was his job to take whatever information scouts found, and run back to camp with it. Simple.
Still, it couldn't hurt to check the perimeter before settling down, especially if the camp counselors were asking. He makes a loop around the lake, keeping his eyes peeled... but mostly he just expects to find the perfect place to settle down and fish, nothing much more than that.
