Shadow Flitz (Singular; Shadow Flit) are a long bodies species that have long since lost their hind legs, tail, and eyes to the power of the shadow and have replaced them with mold-able wispy appendages. these large, friendly beasts have been recently tamed to be ridden by humans and anthros alike. They have large, wide front paws, long pointed ears, and short, smooth fur. They can be naturally found in dark caves, wetlands, or thick forests. however have also been spotted in pastures while hunting. They are carnivores- meaning they are only meant to eat meat and they often prey on birds, deer, rodents, and bats.

When Lio was younger, he use to hear many names assigned to himself.
Lucy. Freak. Weirdo.
He used to listen, take every syllable in and let it fester in his heart.
He used to think they were right. Think he must be a weirdo for feeling
like a boy when he was born a girl. Must be a freak for the way his jaw stuck
out differently from those around him. Must be disgusting and boring since he
didn't have any friends. So, he didn't try for a while.
Let them talk and stayed alone.
Eventually, it became too much. He wasn't introverted. He craved someone
else's attention. He wanted friends. He wanted to be popular.

That's when he met a flit named Sunny, a bright, happy Flit who didn't care
that he was different. Or, she did, but she liked that he was different. She
said she was different too, that she had a girlfriend named Jasper who she
loved with all her heart and that she planned on having flitlings with.
Lio was... confused, at first. He didn't know why she was so nice. Didn't know
why she wanted to be friends. Eventually, he realized that she genuinely cared
for him, and wanted him to be happy, even if especially if he was
different. So, he started to focus on what she said, how she lived her life, happy
and true, giving her heart away so openly to those in need. He saw her get hurt,
but also saw every time she would make someone's day brighter, saw their eyes
light up and their shoulders relax as she would talk and help them feel better.

Now he works to help those in need, living near Sunny and visiting on a daily basis
to catch up and chat about all the chatter around town. He'd come to terms with
himself, and accepted that, even if people thought he was weird, he knew better.
He knew he was strong, and that his friends knew the true him.

And that made him happy.

Calhoun comes from a special city where death does not exist in the way that we know it. You see, the people of Nacre have three lives. The first is true life. They have flesh and bone and blood that flows and can be killed just like you and me. However, upon that first death they are presented a choice and, if they are not ready to pass on, they are brought back from the brink. This second life is an undead one. They still have a physical body, but their heart no longer beats. They can, however, still die in this form. Once again, they are given a choice. If it suits them, they return as a ghost. This spectral life persists for an eternity if the soul in question wishes it and will not end until an active choice is made or one encounters some very special anti-ghost magical items. In this case, death is celebrated as the next step of a very long journey, and once they say their goodbyes the ghost fades away into the unknown.

This particular quality of Nacre is due to the reigning monarchs. A family with the power over death presides over the city, keeping it's citizens thriving through all of their three lives. Whether gods or merely magical, many have disputed over the years, but if you ask Calhoun, they're nothing more than people just like all the rest. As a Prince of Nacre, he would know, after all. They too can die, if they wish it. Of that he was more than certain.

Tristero, King of Nacre, began to get ideas. He wanted to spread their kingdom and their control, to bring a deathless world to everyone around them. Calhoun believed that much power could only be bad and that bringing such a gift to people without asking if they wanted it could just as easily became a curse. Calhoun, then known as Angelo, tried to convince Tristero to wait. To be patient. Tristero did not listen. So, Calhoun, not seeing any other options, killed Tristero. Not once, not twice, but three times. Then, he fled into the night. He escaped the city and the nurse and turned to the sea. He became a pirate of sorts, dropping his name and title and leaving his sister to inherit the throne of Nacre.

Now he sails the seas, adventuring and trying to put his past behind him. He may still believe that what he'd done was for the best overall, but even still guilt sits heavy in his chest. To this day he's still dealing with the consequences from his actions and, honestly, he's not sure he'll ever be over what he'd done. It was far easier not to think about it. So, as he always has, Calhoun spends his life running.
