Adair felt a tremor run down his spine as the noise started up again. It was a high keening, a strange wail that he had never heard before. The sound had been piercing his eardrums for the past few hours, occasionally having pauses or breaks for a period of time before inevitably starting up again. That wretched sound sent the nearby squirrels running, their tails flicking with a nervous anxiety.
Though Adair would often eat the squirrels, he still felt a slight pity to see them afraid in their own homes, especially from such an awful, unnatural sound. So, he started walking towards the sound. It was less because he wanted to (though he was curious), and more because he felt an obligation, as he was probably the largest animal in the forest.
He followed the sound, wincing slightly as the shrieking got louder the closer he got to the source. He forced his legs to keep moving though, and he reached the edge of a clearing before long. He flicked his tail, lightly catching a bush to his right and sending it into a frenzy of shaking leaves. Immediately, the sound stopped, returning the forest to a complete silence.
He stayed very still, suddenly feeling a sharp tension in the air around him. It was a waiting silence, and he could almost feel the anticipation from whatever creature lay in the clearing. He had just started to back up, to wait and come from a different direction, when and where it would likely be safer, when the bush to his right suddenly exploded in a shower of leaves and dirt and sound.
Stumbling, he backed up immediately, but not nearly fast enough. A creature carreened straight into him, almost knocking him entirely off balance. He caught himself, his heart racing as he caught a strange scent and glanced down to see just what was attacking him. What he saw was far from what he expected...
A very small, almost hairless child was clinging to his back leg, making small huffing sounds. It was a female by the scent, but he could tell very little beyond that. Cautiously, he inched his face towards her, trying to see her better. Immediately, she turned to look at him, her large eyes filled with liquid that was racing down her cheeks at a startling rate.
He wasn't much for strong emotions, but even he couldn't hold back from the twinge of sympathy for the young girl. She seemed very scared and upset somehow, and despite himself, he wanted to help her. Carefully, he tried to pry his leg out of her hands, grasping some loose material on her back, but she began the ear-piercing wail again, and failed her arm and catching the side of his head. He backed up instinctively, shaking his head. It hadn't really hurt, but it had been enough to shock him.
She seemed to feel bad then, since she started crying more and looking at him. "Hurt?" He thought he heard her say. He blinked, confused, as she pulled off a strip of material off her arm, tying it on his brow. "All better." She said then, sounding much happier. He didn't understand the meaning, but he accepted it anyway, grasping the material on her back again and carefully placing her on his back.
Then, he started walking towards the nearest human town, hoping that the other creatures would know what she needed better than he did, and be able to make her feel better.

Why had he kept it though? Well, that was hard to say. He loved the little pendant, and he remembered fondly helping the young girl, so he wears the pendant. It was a gift, not from a friend, but from a stranger, and to him that means all the more.
