She often spends her free time learning sign language. Her sister is mute and they use it to communicate with each other. Althea also teaches her own friends sign language so her sister can have conversations with them and doesn't feel excluded when they all hang out. Sign language calms Althea as it prevents her from raising her voice excitedly while talking and forces her to think before she says something. Her dream is to one day become an ASL ("American Sign Language") Interpreter and translate speeches for the deaf.

Dark Matter - How can there be 84.54% of the universe that we know nothing about?
With a personality as peevish and easily perturbed as hers, it's no wonder that she
finds hypotheticals unsettling. When Melinoe was first introduced to the subject of
dark matter, she latched on to the information obstinately. What is it? Where
is it? Can we see it? Does it even really exist?

Long after her conversational partner lost interest, the relentless plumerian continued
to remain mystified, and threw herself into researching the topic. It started out as a
small hobby - something to waste time on - but of course, like all small hobbies,
it quickly grew into a soul-consuming obsession. If dark matter was one of the greatest
mysteries in all of science, she would be the one to shed light on the "matter" for once
and for all. Now, as a celebrated astrophysicist, she works doggedly toward her goal.
