Name:Pyry "snowstorm" (Finnish)
Gender: malePyry walked down the snowing deciduous forest, his hind paws used to the little amount of grass, which was covered by snow that shone easily in the night without the help of the cloud-covered moon. His black fur hid him in the night while his white markings blended with the snowstorm. His paw steps made no noise in the snow, as the flakes that fell were soft and did not harden like the type of snow that you could make snow sculptures with. Even the keenest eyes and the sharpest of hearing could only see the cold, tall trees and hear the wind softly blowing the large and heavy falling snowflakes.
His eyes searched the ground, looking for the evasive rabbits that were as white as the snow that covered the ground. The rabbits would be hiding this winter, but Pyry knew that holes hidden in the cold snow held rabbits that could feed the starving Viscet. However, the rabbits would be thin and hungry, so what normally could feed the stomach of the aching Viscet now only fills a small portion, only just enough to keep the skinny Viscet going.
While the white- ringed black eyes of Pyry scanned the gleaming, soft snow and walked against the storm, he bumped into something. The thing made a squeal as it fell to the ground, flakes of fallen snow falling near the large object. Almost instantly, the smell of Viscet rose into his nose; and as it did, he almost coughed at the intense smell he was not used to from a Viscet. It smelled like a mix of rotten food, fear, and some other type of scent he could not describe.
“Watch where you’re going!” The viscet sounded female, and he realized the smell he couldn’t decide was female. He had been alone for so long, he had forgotten the scent of a girl.
“I- I’m sorry, miss-“Pyry was cut off by the sudden anger that replaced the fear that haunted his nose.
“What did you just call me?” The Viscet instantly stood, the red eyes almost lighting on fire. “Did you just call me “Miss?”
Pyry had been sure this Viscet was female. “Ah, I’m sorry, Mister-“
“That’s better…”
“So you’re a guy? You sound female and you smell li-“
”No!” The Viscet’s black face turned into a scowl, “I’m agender! Don’t judge a Viscet if you just met them!”
“O-oh…sorry… but you wanted to be called ‘Mister’?”
“Yes…I’d rather be called a he.”
Pyry inspected the Viscet; almost black, but a hint of red hid in the darkness of the black. Red stripes, along with a red gradient, traced the back mane of the small Viscet. Spots of white rested on the shoulder, mid-back, paws, head, and the end of the tail, all traced out by black. The black outlines turned into swirls where the white spots ended. The almost black main fur swirled on the gradients of red. His eyes, red with a black outline, had white around it with the black outlining. The bottom mane ended on the white stomach. His nose had a streak of white, again outlined by black, but the rest of the nose was black. The end of his paws gradient to red, along with black claws that stuck out from the tiny paws.
“I think it would be rude to not introduce myself,” the Viscet suddenly interested in Pyry, as if he had something that had picked the unnamed Viscet’s attention; “My name is Kan. How about you?”
“Pyry,” He replied, wondering why Kan had decided to begin talking to him as of Pyry had not offended him.
“Hey, Pyry,” A sudden look of adventure filled the eyes of Kan, “I’m hungry, and I can tell you are too. Want to go hunting?”
“Ah- um, alright…” Pyry couldn’t get over Kan’s sudden kindness. It’s as if he had chosen him for a reason…
They set off to finding a rabbit in the same direction as Pyry had first walked along. Kan’s footsteps were loud as they quickly fell into the snow. Pyry had to continue warning him that rabbits live underground right now and that they would hear the footsteps. At first Kan had obediently and quickly fixed his mistakes, but after awhile Kan was frustrated and replied with “Yeah, yeah, I know…” and would walk quietly again, until he stopped paying attention and walk loudly again. Pyry never knew a Viscet who seemed to walk without instinct, as if he never needed to care about walking in snow.
After what felt like hours of the cold, uncaring weather wind and the eye-burning flakes of snow, Pyry noticed a skinny, hungry rabbit, which looked like they had been blocked out of their home by the snowstorm. As they hunted, Pyry noticed how inexperienced Kan was, and how they had almost lost the rabbit, saved by Pyry’s quick reactions.
“I just want to know, why are you not very good at hunting, no offense?” Pyry asked after finishing the part of his rabbit.
“I live in the city,” Pyry could tell, but brushed it off since he was in the middle in the forest.
“Why are you out here then?”
“Ah- don’t worry about that,” Kan licked his muzzle cleaned as his obvious fake smile unsuccessfully hid his nervousness.
Pyry looked up at Kan, who went back to trying to find a bit of meat on his side of the rabbit. Pyry couldn’t believe it; he had made a friend out here. He remembered his mother, who had tried to convince him to stay in the pack, told him he’d never find friends, that if he ever met a Viscet, they’d be in a pack and unwilling to take him in. She would tell him of harsh, cold winters and having no one to help. As he stared at the Viscet, a feeling of triumph fell over Pyry. You were wrong, mom. You never know what will happen. Don’t tell me otherwise.
