Hoku never really stood out from anyone else around him. But he never really fit in, either. On top of it all, he has a secret he can never tell. Well, it's more like he doesn't know how to tell without making it all awkward. Anyway, his soul has been partly replaced with a star (causing his glowiness). How did this happen? Well, as a kid, he had a wonderful habit of getting lost in the middle of the woods. And one night he had gotten really lost, and needed help finding his way home. So, he used the North Star. Quite literally. And now he has part of the North Star forever in his soul. Cool, right?

So, Hoku changed from an awkward teen to a slightly less awkward teen with really good directions.

story ::

Tonic stared at the cave wall. He simply stared. He sat in a cave, with the arctic winds howling outside of the entrance. He had built a fire next to him in his fire pit, as he always did whenever he came back from scavenging or hunting. Scavenging... for what, exactly? The arctic gave no mercy... but Tonic was used to the harsh treatment the cold gave him. He paid no mind to it and lived life like he was in the tropics, except with many more clothes on.

Suddenly, the young plumerian picked up a piece of rock laying next to his fire. He studied it for a while. Tonic was very quiet, almost forlorn. He enjoyed to study things and learn how they worked, as he had never gone to school so most things were new to him. He took the sharp end of the rock and leaned forward, scratching it onto the cave surface in front of him. He made a sketchy white line and then backed up and looked at it carefully. This is interesting, he thought. Tonic leaned forward again and began to draw a picture that merely came from his mind. He made sketchy lines with his right hand and made straight ones with his left when he needed it. His hood pulled around his head tightly, the fur around the edges tickling his face, he moved his "chair" (which was only a large, moveable rock) backwards to look at the full picture. It was nothing much. At least to Tonic. He had drawn a barren wasteland full of snow, wind, and cold with a lonely Plumerian standing in the middle of it. The Plumerian looked back at Tonic through his hood of his heavy jacket. The man stared at Tonic. He leaned forward and drew a square around his drawing, then labeled it Ginseng. He felt close to this man. He didn't know this man. Sure, Tonic had drawn himself into the drawing but he did not know the man personally. It was strange, how he had drawn himself but didn't know who it was in that little box of white lines.

Tonic turned around, the fire warming his face and lighting up his features as darkness quickly claimed the arctic tundra outside of the cave. He squinted as a rush of icy cold wind blew into the cave with enough force to push the plumerian's hood back onto his shoulders. The wind died down slightly and Tonic opened his eyes, only to see himself outside in the tundra, staring back at him as he was in his drawing. Then as quick as the image had formed, it was gone with the wind.
