Fact: An Okapi's stripes are believed to not only be used for camouflage, but it's fur is also oily and keeps the Okapi dry on rainy days. It's also thought that these stripes are to assist babies in following their mothers through the dark forests and adults with finding each other.

The Okapi was not classified as a distinct species until 1900 - 1901, when Harry Johnston sent two pieces of Zebra-like skin to London which was analysed and meant that a new species had been recorded.
It was so rare at one point, the okapi was known as the "Forest Unicorn"
