When I hatched, my mom gave me a bead on a string. It was a bright, beautiful green.
I was happy. Mom and Dad were happy. Big brother was... Annoyed about a new kid stealing the attention, but happy enough.
When I was thirteen, Mom and Dad fought a lot. Big brother was always off with his friends, avoiding the conflict.
Mom and Dad were overprotective of me. I didn't leave much, didn't have many friends. I sat and listened and cried from my perch in the tall oak.
That fall, I ran away, taking a light blue bead with me and hoping I could find a home.
When I was seventeen, I was feeling more lost and alone than ever. Under cloudy night skies, I sat by a stream and cried, rain washing the tears off my face.
A reflection appeared in the water, and I yelped in surprise, spitting blue flames as I jumped.
I learned to breathe fire when Brother found me that day.
He said Mom and Dad had been looking for me at first, but gave up that winter, thinking I had died in the storms. He asked if I wanted to go back.
I said no.
He took me to a place for Beans like me, Beans seeking homes or whose parents couldn't care for them. An adoption center, he said. He promised not to tell and gave me a deep blue bead, then left.
When I was nineteen, going on twenty, I found what I was looking for.
I found my home.
