Which colour(s) is she not able to see;;

She cannot see any, she has total colour blindness. Or Monochromacy:

Monochromacy, also known as "total color blindness," is the lack of ability to distinguish colors (and thus the person views everything as if it were on a black and white television); caused by cone defect or absence. Monochromacy occurs when two or all three of the cone pigments are missing and color and lightness vision is reduced to one dimension.

She also has these symptoms that occur with monochromacy:

severe light sensitivity (She cannot sit in a room that is brightly lit or go out into the sun for long)
long-sightedness
involuntary eye movements or nystagmus (It often makes her look like she is flicking back from one thing to another)
and central scotoma (she has a small black dot in the middle of her vison, she finds it rather annoying)

How does she deal with her vision defect?;;

She got used to it. That’s the only way she thought she would be able to overcome her defect. By learning to live with it. It was certainly tiring to do first. It was extremely hard to start dealing with it. She'd constantly refuse to talk about colours and if someone brought up the topic, she'd just storm off. It's not that she was trying to be rude to others, it's just she couldn't stand the thought of not knowing what they were talking about. She has to know everything. Often she'd break down crying and flailing. She sometimes did it in public when it just became too much and it gave her a lot of weird stares and muttering. She wished she knew what colour was. She'd imagine what they'd look like and how it would feel to actually be able to see colour. She'd go into a room and look at all the different greys and tried to pretend that this grey was this colour and this grey was this colour. Unfortunately, she knew that was never going to happen. She stopped wishing but then started to take in what she could actually see around her. She thought to herself 'At least i'm not fully blind' and she took her defect and turned it into a gift. She became more aware of her surroundings; she relied on shapes instead of colour. Different shades showed her whether it was light or dark, or what shapes could indicate where she was going or what was there. She and eventually, became more aware of different beans and their personalities because she couldn't judge someone by their colour. After a while, she felt like she could see right into a bean's soul just by looking at them. She noticed their facial expressions, their body language, their quirks because she they weren't blinded by colour. This is how she defined colour as. Difference in a bean's soul and their personalities. And now she knows what it is like to see colour. Even though she can't actually see it.

Although she can only see black and white, the way she thinks about things is certainly not in the usual black and white way. She thinks beyond the spectrum about things.

    Like a cat, Serenity is most sensitive to blues and greens. Any other colors in the spectrum are dull and meaningless.
How does she deal with her vision defect?;;
    This disability doesn't stop her from doing what she loves most; art. She has a passion for painting. What she thinks she is painting and what she is actually painting differs greatly. Because of her lack of the ability to see colors, sometimes her pieces turn out with things like pink trees or orange houses. Due to her sensitivity to the colors blue and green, her skies, water, and foliage turn out natural for the most part. She is missing a lot in the world of art but doesn't know it and that never stops her.

Sadly, Beatrix is completely colour blind as she was naturally born with this condition. Her total eye vision of colours is in black and white.

Name:
Image Aya Image

Aya is derived from the Japanese words 彩 "colour" and/or 綾 "design".

Gender:
Female

Which color(s) is she not able to see?:
She has Dichromasy, which means that can't percieve any difference in color between red, orange, yellow, and green. For her, these all appear to be the same color!

Where I found some of the scientific names and descriptions: http://colorvisiontesting.com/color2.htm

How does she deal with her vision defect?:
Aya finds life quite difficult at times, and often feels left out when she sees others admiring a nice sunset at the end of a hard day. She takes joy in the senses that she does have however, and wears lots of pretty perfumes when she can (and when she doesn't feel like she'll be judged by her peers for applying things like rose or bubblegum perfume). She also listens to a variety of music to distract her from feeling like she doesn't belong. Aya believes that her other senses are actually more acute than other bean's because of her limited color spectrum. For this reason she will occaisionally get lost in her other senses for awhile - life from her point of view can be awe inspiring at times.

She already felt like she didn't belong in society when she was young, because when other girls where interested in barbies, she played with other boy beans with their trucks and toy cars instead. This led her into being on the fringe of most social groups. Now she considers herself a rebel, and takes pride (most of the time) in her difference, but is internally distraught because of it for one main reason.

Her color blindness has stolen from her one of her life long dreams, which was to be a pilot. She has wanted to be a pilot since she was a young bean but because of her particular kind of color blindness, she has enormous difficulties (in fact it's impossible for her) when distinguishing between different colors of buttons that one might find on a plane switchboard.

Art:
I drew the prism used next to Aya's name!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Image
This is a picture that I drew of Aya who is grasping at the beautiful aurora borelias that is flashing across the sky before her. While she can perceive some of the colors dancing in the sky, the rest are lost on her.
To her, these colors feel like they are just out of reach.
PS: If you are wondering why she isn't wearing her prism necklace, she didn't have it before this moment I captured in time...
Here is the link if you're interested in viewing the full size version. (It's a higher quality picture.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My last peice is finally done and ready to be shown to the world. I made my soft sculpture of Aya with lots of scrap felt, hot glue and pipe cleaners, so it's possible to make her sit, stand or whatever else! Her tail is fun to bend... :3 I tried to get her back markings drawn as accurately as I could, but drawing on felt with permenant markers - I've learned - is much more difficult than it sounds! I re-created the prism around her neck with the glass bead I had, but I couldn't find a tiny prism to put around her. I think that my replica is pretty close though! She was so fun to make, my tiny Aya.... :D

How does she deal with her vision defect?;; She doesn't really like to speak about it though she deals with it by making her own color scale and constantly adjusting it so she knows what shades of what are this color or that so she adapts.
Art;;ImageImageImage And I made a moving picture but there is NO WAY to display it here. :(

I'm hoping to win her because I do not own a JBD yet.

She can't see most colour's, she really only can see black and white, sometimes she sees them or she can't determine red to magenta.
How does she deal with her vision defect?;;
She knew there was no cure to her defect, so she dealt with physics and other people and soon she overcame it, and oddly enough became a designer, she known for her crazy colour combo's.

Which color(s) is she not able to see:

Poor girl can't see any color apart from bright neon or fluorescent colors.

How does she deal with her vision defect?:

Shimmer lives in a dark world constantly. There is nothing worse that turning around and having neon shining in your face, she hates it but she tries to put it all behind her and get on with life. The bright colors always hurt her eyes against the gray blank world that she lives in.
