Name:
Aya
Aya is derived from the Japanese words 彩 "colour" and/or 綾 "design".Gender: Female
Which color(s) is she not able to see?: She has Dichromasy, which means that can't percieve any difference in color between
red,
orange,
yellow, and
green. For her, these all appear to be the
same color!Where I found some of the scientific names and descriptions: http://colorvisiontesting.com/color2.htmHow does she deal with her vision defect?: Aya finds life quite difficult at times, and often feels left out when she sees others admiring a nice sunset at the end of a hard day. She takes joy in the senses that she does have however, and wears lots of pretty perfumes when she can (and when she doesn't feel like she'll be judged by her peers for applying things like rose or bubblegum perfume). She also listens to a variety of music to distract her from feeling like she doesn't belong. Aya believes that her other senses are actually more acute than other bean's because of her limited color spectrum. For this reason she will occaisionally get lost in her other senses for awhile - life from her point of view can be awe inspiring at times.
She already felt like she didn't belong in society when she was young, because when other girls where interested in barbies, she played with other boy beans with their trucks and toy cars instead. This led her into being on the fringe of most social groups. Now she considers herself a rebel, and takes pride (most of the time) in her difference, but is internally distraught because of it for one main reason.
Her color blindness has stolen from her one of her life long dreams, which was to be a pilot. She has wanted to be a pilot since she was a young bean but because of her particular kind of color blindness, she has enormous difficulties (in fact it's impossible for her) when distinguishing between different colors of buttons that one might find on a plane switchboard.
Art: I drew the prism used next to Aya's name!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a picture that I drew of Aya who is grasping at the beautiful aurora borelias that is flashing across the sky before her. While she can perceive some of the colors dancing in the sky, the rest are lost on her.
To her, these colors feel like they are just out of reach.
PS: If you are wondering why she isn't wearing her prism necklace, she didn't have it before this moment I captured in time...Here is the link if you're interested in viewing the full size version. (It's a higher quality picture.)
My last peice is finally done and ready to be shown to the world. I made my soft sculpture of Aya with lots of scrap felt, hot glue and pipe cleaners, so it's possible to make her sit, stand or whatever else!
Her tail is fun to bend... :3 I tried to get her back markings drawn as accurately as I could, but drawing on felt with permenant markers - I've learned - is much more difficult than it sounds! I re-created the prism around her neck with the glass bead I had, but I couldn't find a tiny prism to put around her. I think that my replica is pretty close though! She was so fun to make, my tiny Aya....
