She will fight for her family and friends till the end.
History/Background:If you want to get out alive, run for your life~It started out as a normal night. The sky was clear, the stars were out and the moon was full, floating high in the sky. Me, my owner, Rebecca, and her daughter Kayla were sitting in the living room. Rebecca was knitting Kayla a sweater while Kayla was playing tug of war with me. I knew to be gentle with the young girl, I didn't want to hurt her or ever see her hurt. Kayla yawned loudly and Rebecca looked up from her knitting.
“Time for bed little one.” She said sweetly, picking up little Kayla. I stood up as Rebecca took the little girl upstairs. I wasn't allowed in bed with either Rebecca or Kayla but I slept in the hall outside Kayla's room, you know, to keep the monsters away. I perked my ears as Kayla muttered something about not wanting to go to sleep, that she wasn't tired yet. Rebecca laughed a little and shook her head. As Rebecca laid Kayla down, I walked in to lick her cheek before walking back out to my dog bed and blanket outside her door. Rebecca came out of the room and gently shut the door behind her.
“Good girl Moss. Now you go to sleep too.” she said, kneeling down to pat my nose and stroke my long green fur. She didn't seem to mind at all that I didn't look like normal dogs. Actually, she seemed to love me even more for it. I gave a little yap before turning three times to lay down and Rebecca pulled the blanket over me. “Good night Moss. Sleep well.” She said, before turning out the hallway light before going downstairs to her room to go to sleep as well.

In the middle of the night, my nose twitched. I lifted my head, half asleep and not ready to get up quite yet. Something smelled different...like burning wood. It had been getting colder that past few days, so I thought that maybe Rebecca had thrown some wood into the old wood stove to keep the house warm. Taking a deep breath through my nose, I smelled it again, stronger this time. Usually after smelling it once or twice, my nose adjusted and I got over the smell. Just in case, I took a third sniff. The smell was still there. I stood up, suddenly on high alert. Something was wrong now, I could feel it. I walked downstairs, to see about the wood stove. It wasn't even burning...so what was that burning smell? Looking towards the window, I saw a bright flame flicker up. I gasped then ran towards the closed door on the far side of the room, barking as loud as I could to wake Rebecca. There was a faint yell from the inside of the room, something along the lines of 'Shut up and go back to sleep.' Well...apparently she wasn't aware of the danger. I then backed up to the far wall of the living room, and then ran, throwing myself at the bedroom door. I heard a heavy groan and footsteps. That did the trick. Rebecca opened the door and looked down at me. I started barking and ran back to the window. Rebecca followed me, telling me not to play now, it was the middle of the night. I jumped up, putting my paws on the window, which was starting to get warm. Rebecca came over to me and went to pick me up. As she glanced out the window, a look of horror spread across her face.
“Good girl Moss, thank you.” She said, running back upstairs to get Kayla awake so they could leave. A loud crashing sound filled the area as a giant tree fell through the kitchen. I watched with horror as flames started crawling up the walls and clinging to the ceiling, burning my precious home. I started barking again as Rebecca came downstairs with Kayla. Rebecca shook her head and started going through the backdoor exit. As I went to follow her, a burning support beam fell from the upper roof and blocked the little hall to the backdoor exit. I heard a loud pop from behind me and saw that the window had shattered from the heat. Now was my only chance to get out of the house alive. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me. Using the back of the couch as a spring board, I launched myself through the window and into the burning night.

When I landed outside, I'm not sure what I expected, but it wasn't this. All the trees around the house were covered with flames and starting to fall in whatever direction they pleased. Worse off, it seemed that I was trapped. My first thought was to find a way to the other side of the house to find Rebecca and Kayla. I looked side to side quickly before running to my left. As I rounded the corner of the house, I stopped dead in my tracks. Burning trees were laying crisscrossed around. With a sigh, I turned to run back and jumped back as a tree nearly hit me. I took a moment to call my breathing and ran towards the only opening I saw, between two trees about twenty feet away. I jumped through the trees and then looked back, just to see if they were gonna fall on me. They started falling the other way so I turned back and then started to circle the other way to the back of the house. After making zigzags around falling trees, I found my way to the back of the house. Rebecca had left the back door open in her haste to get out with Kayla. I didn't see either of them. I panicked slightly, and started barking again. Nothing answered my bark except the crackling of the trees and the loud thuds of them hitting the ground. I started running again, in the direction I thought Rebecca would've went with Kayla. Little did I know (until later on), that I had been going deeper into the burning forest. I stopped at a little incline but I slipped, rolling down the incline and landing a patch of cool...something. I opened my eyes, not realizing I had closed them. I looked at what I was laying in. Moss, how fitting. Wait...Moss. That meant water was nearby. I started walking along the moss and eventually stepped into a shallow part of a pond. The water was cool against my slightly burning fur. I slid in the water deeper, to cool off. I looked around, the pond I was in was surrounded by burning trees but because of the damp area around the pond, none of the fire reached the pond. Also, the trees were far enough away for them to not be able to reach the pond when they fell. I started to feel the adrenaline drain from my body and sleep started to take over. Half asleep, I gently gathered a small nest of moss to sleep on. As my emerald green eyes slid shut, I whined because I hadn't found Rebecca or Kayla.
–
Light hit my eyes and I slowly opened my eyes. The first thing I noticed was that I wasn't in my moss nest beside the pond. A green plush blanket was wrapped around me and I was being carried. I looked up and saw a man carrying me. When he felt me shift, he looked down at me.
“Well...good to see you're awake. I was worried you were dead when I found you by the pond and you weren't moving.” He said softly to me and I yipped a bit. “Well, I found you in a moss patch so I'll call you Moss. You're fur is an odd color, but it's calming and interesting. My name is Richard, and you'll be staying with me.” He said, stroking my green fur. I settled back down into the plush blanket in his arms and let him carry me to his car. Richard set the blanket down in the passenger seat and went around to get in the driver's side. As we drove around curves and through forests to get to my new home, I sighed, thinking about Rebecca and Kayla. I hoped they were okay. I didn't find them and I couldn't have lived on my own at the lake. Maybe it was a good thing Richard found me. I might never see Rebecca or Kayla again but I'll have a home where I'm loved and where I will stay.

After living with Richard for a few weeks, I decided I liked it here. It was out in the countryside. It wasn't all forest, there was a big field for me and Richard to play in. There was also a large pond with fish in it. I was allowed to swim in the pond but I found out the hard way not to try and catch the fish. Richard's house was fair size, not too big, not too small. I slept in Richard's bed at night with him or in his reading chair in the corner of the room. Richard didn't have any other animals besides me and the fish in the pond. One day, Richard came home earlier than expected.
“Moss, here girl.” He called, and whistled. I came running from his room and met him in the kitchen. He picked me up and ran his fingers through my fur. “I have someone for you to meet.” he said, walking outside with me. When I saw the two people leaning against the car outside, I barked for joy. It was Rebecca and Kayla.
“MOSS!” Kayla shouted and ran up to Richard, who put me down beside the girl. She started petting me and I licked her face.
“Richard...how did you find her? We thought we lost her forever.” Rebecca said, kneeling down to pet me. I licked her hand then looked up at Richard.
“Well, I went into the woods after the fire and scouted around, seeing if we lost the whole mountainside. I found a little pond and she was laying in a little nest of moss. I didn't know she had an owner because she didn't have a collar on. I named her Moss because I found her in a nest of moss. Although, it is amusing that she was already named Moss.” he said with a laugh and I barked. Rebecca and Richard looked at me.
“We are one big family now.” Rebecca said, picking up Kayla and Richard picked me up before heading into the house.

Also: I would like to thank Charbi (Solanum) for the inspiration for this story. She typed some lyrics (the ones bolded at the top of the story) in a join me chat as I was looking at the picture of this beautiful dog. I had always liked this dog as she is my favorite color and I was surprised when she was still here, even after I became a staff member.
