Story: A filly like no other born as a middle child of three and always being the spoiled girl that she was. As a filly she would grow up use to getting her way and traveling far enough to be worried about but not enough to get punished over. Her spirit to run and explored gave her hooves wings. She was branded a trouble maker as she would often get all the other foals running with her all helter skelter in the desert. Most often leaving mares calling worriedly after their little ones and the lead stud to wonder what had gotten into his childs mind.

As she got older it was seen to that she was guarded as rogue stallions came looking for more females to add to their herd or to start their herd. She often would follow a short distant before turning on her back heels and galloping back to her herd with her banner high and waving. Her head would be seen high up in the air with her nose touching the sky as if to say she was better then they could handle. At some point her father gave up trying to fight as it seemed she could handle herself with all the sassiness and stubborniness that had been bred into her, he blames her mother's side. She seemed that she had picked her mother's herd to stay with but perhaps it was the fact she was waiting for the one that would be able to keep her in line.

Horse's Name: Shiloh "Shi"[Shy] (Means: Abundance; Fruitfulness; Gift)

Story: The Secret (Doing it from a person's point of view but in the last paragraph it switches to the DAM's point of view, hope you like it!)

A man sat in a maroon recliner, reading through a book about horse stories, not forgetting the time he met a Desert Appaloosa Mustang. Then, a soft hand ran through his black hair and he glanced up before digging into the book again.

"Hey Aaron. Reading that book again?" his wife, Linda asked. Her red hair framed carefully around her face as her blue eyes glistened in the dim light coming from the fan. Aaron stared at his wife, smiling a bit before nodding once. Suddenly, screaming filled the air as two children ran into the room. Anna, Linda and Aaron's daughter, cradled a white and red taffy leopard horse that Aaron had carved out of wood, screeching with delight as her twin brother, Luke came chasing after her with a cowboy doll and a regular male doll.

"You won't catch me old cowboy!" Anna cried out, ending her sentence with a whinny as she ran around the coffee table. Linda widened her eyes and tried to calm them down but the children wouldn't listen.

"Just watch," Luke replied with the cowboy and he switched his voice to the male doll. "Stop it you cowboy!" Anna yelped and tried to make a beeline for the male doll with her wooden horse but Luke immediately stopped her with his cowboy. At that moment, Anna slammed into the coffee table and landed on her back, dropping the wooden horse. Aaron shot up and out of his chair, picking up Anna and the wooden horse carefully as Linda squatted and fixed the coffee table. With a sigh, Aaron sat down again with Anna in his lap while Luke climbed up onto his dad's lap as well.

"Please be more careful!" Linda exclaimed but Aaron shushed her carefully. Aaron then looked at the digital clock right next to him, seeing that it was 8:30 PM.

"Okay you two. You want me to tell you another story tonight?" Aaron asked with mischief in his eyes. The two kids nodded eagerly as their father took the dolls and the horse away from them, getting ready to tell the story of how he found a Desert Appaloosa Mustang. "Okay. Many years ago, there was a young man, and he loved horses very much. This man looked like you Luke, and his name was..." Aaron trailed off, trying not to reveal that he himself was the man in the story. "Uh, Jack. Jack would always go out into the desert and look for... Desert Appaloosa Mustangs!"

"Desert Appaloosa Mustangs?" Anna echoed in awe, watching as her father nodded.

"Yes indeed. Anyways, he rarely spotted one, and when he did, they would run away too quickly and he would lose their tracks. However, one day, when he was thirteen years old, Jack snuck out at night, when the desert temperatures were okay. He was determined and knew that he would be able to find one and catch it." Aaron paused, waiting for his kids to ask questions, but none of them spoke. "He searched for hours and finally, he saw her!" Aaron held up the Red Taffy Leopard wooden horse for his kids to see and they looked too astonished to speak. "The mare, which is what you call a female horse, looked at Jack and the two stared at each other for a long time. Finally, Jack stepped forward slowly and waited. Then, the mare walked towards him until they were only three feet away from each other!"

"Wow! Was he scared?" Luke exclaimed.

"Yes, Jack was very scared. He was afraid that the Desert Appaloosa Mustang would run away. With a gulp, Jack stepped forward and held out his hand, looking away. He could feel the Red Taffy Leopard's gaze on him and he felt vibrations as the mare with the long mane and tail stepped forward. After a few seconds, Jack could feel her warm breath on his hand before he felt fur as soft as velvet, come in contact. Jack finally looked and smiled before feeling afraid again. He couldn't move! The mare stared at him and he looked back but not into her teal eyes. 'Do not be afraid young one.' Jack widened his eyes, realizing that the mare had spoken to him with her mind!" Aaron stopped and smiled, remembering that memory well.

"What happened next?" the twins asked in unison.

"Oh right. Jack was surprised and said, 'Why should I not be afraid?' The mare shook out her long mane before answering calmly. 'You're afraid that I'll run away. But I know you won't hurt me and I know you wanted to find me, your treasure.' The mare continued to stare at him and Jack turned towards her. He then nodded and asked if she would like to be named, but she shook her head. 'I already have a name, it's Shiloh.' answered the mare and Jack smiled, introducing himself. After a while the sun peeked over the horizon and Jack widened his eyes and said, 'I need to go home!' After saying farewell, he ran off, promising to meet Shiloh again the next night. When Jack got home, he was just in time for breakfast and was about to tell his family about Shiloh, the Desert Appaloosa Mustang, but he realized he could endanger the breed, so he kept quiet." Aaron blinked a few times and studied the wooden horse for a few moments.

"Shiloh. What a nice name!" exclaimed Anna with bright eyes as her brother agreed.

"Yeah it is. In the afternoon, rain had come and Jack knew it was because he had spotted Shiloh. Whenever a human saw a long-haired Desert Appaloosa Mustang, rain would come to the desert. That night, Jack met up with Shiloh again and they were happy to see each other. 'I wanted to tell my family about you, but I didn't because I was afraid that they would come looking.' Jack murmured and Shiloh lifted her grand head, looking up at the stars. 'You did the right thing, you mustn't tell anyone about me.' Shiloh replied with wisdom in your voice. 'Come, let's go for a walk.' Shiloh started to walk away and Jack followed. Suddenly, Shiloh challenged him to a race and Jack accepted the challenge. Every time though, Shiloh would win. Finally, Jack called it quits and went home. Ever since they met each other, they would meet each other again and again, while rain came to Jack's home. A few weeks later, Jack decided to mount Shiloh-."

"Wait! What does mounted mean?!" Luke interrupted with curiosity in his tone.

"Mounted means to get on something. Please don't interrupt. Anyways, Jack mounted Shiloh but she quickly bucked and he fell off. 'Stop! What are you doing?' Shiloh asked with a snort, her teal eyes filled with fear. 'I'm just trying to ride you. Can I get on your back? I'm sorry for scaring you.' Jack said with teary eyes. After a long time, Shiloh allowed him to do it and Jack got on more carefully this time. Once he got on he squeezed his legs against her sides and the beautiful mare broke into a skittish walk."

"She... Broke?! So she, died?!" Anna asked, ready to cry as Aaron smacked his face with his right hand, letting it slide off.

"No, she started to move, that's what I meant, now please don't interrupt." Aaron replied with pleading eyes. "So, Shiloh started to walk carefully, but Jack calmed her down by rubbing his hand against her neck. Shiloh began to trust him with riding and she lowered her head blissfully. After a few minutes, he squeezed her sides again and pushed her into a trot, which is a jog. Her trot was smooth but it was bouncy, so Jack grabbed onto her long, black-and-white mane in order to stay on. Together in the night, Shiloh and Jack moved together like they were one. After a while, Jack got off and pulled a carrot out of his back pocket and gave it to Shiloh, who ate it happily. Then, Jack returned home again and rain came once more. Jack's sister," Aaron hesitated before deciding to disguise his sister, Bethany in the story, just like he did with himself. "Valerie, suspected something was up and told their father about it. The father called his friend afterwards and asked if he would like to go on a mission. His friend agreed and together, they followed Jack the next night. They made sure that they went unnoticed as they watched Jack ride the Desert Appaloosa Mustang and give her a treat afterwards.

"'That mare, it's a Desert Appaloosa Mustang!' exclaimed the friend, whose name was Matthew. 'We should catch her, and I believe she has a herd. Maybe we could use her to catch others!' The father nodded and followed Jack home at dawn with his friend, as they planned a way to capture the Desert Appaloosa Mustang. After a month of planning, Matthew went out one night an hour before Jack with Jack's father following on a Quarter Horse gelding, making sure he wasn't spotted. When they got to the spot where Jack always met Shiloh, Jack's father hid with a lasso in his hand as Matthew walked up to where the Desert Appaloosa Mustang was waiting for Jack. When Shiloh realized he wasn't Jack, she whinnied and ran off, causing many other Desert Appaloosa Mustangs to come to her to help her. Jack had heard his friend when he was going to visit her and he ran towards her. When he got there, his father had already captured her with his lasso and Jack had spotted other Desert Appaloosa Mustangs. While Shiloh writhed with the lasso around her neck, she cried out to Jack and he ran over to her. For a few seconds, Shiloh calmed down and Jack got on. 'Why did you tell your family? I told you not to!' Shiloh said softly. 'I didn't I promise!' Jack replied and Shiloh sighed. 'Okay, I trust you.' she replied as Jack got the lasso off of her neck.

"Then, Jack pulled at his end of the rope and his father fell off of the gelding. 'Sorry Dad!' Jack called as Matthew grabbed the rope and tried to capture the other Desert Appaloosa Mustangs. 'Oh no you don't!' Jack cried out, anger flowing in his voice. 'Wait! You don't understand! Your father and I are trying to get the horses to safety.' Matthew lied while Shiloh snorted. 'Getting us to safety, my hoof.' she nickered as Jack rubbed her neck. 'Go home now!' Shiloh exclaimed at the other Desert Appaloosa Mustangs and they ran off as Jack urged Shiloh into a canter and they moved towards Matthew. Matthew then yelped and ran off, tripping in the sand as he yelled and cried. 'Dad, please go. I just wanted her to be safe. Can you leave, for me?' Jack murmured as he dismounted. The father nodded and got back on his mount and rode home.

"'Shiloh. I don't think it's safe for us to meet anymore. I think it's time for us to let go.' Jack said sadly as he stroked Shiloh's soft nose. Shiloh lowered her head and let out a whinny that sounded like weeping. 'I think it's time too. You were a great friend, and I will never forget you.' Shiloh nickered sadly. Jack then wrapped his arms around Shiloh's neck and hugged her, crying hard. 'You'll have to leave now. It was nice knowing you.' Jack whispered as he stepped back. After a few seconds, Shiloh turned and looked back before running away, her long mane and tail flowing in the wind. Jack then went back home and never forgot his friend, who may still be roaming the desert sands today. The end." Aaron ended his story and looked down at his children as they blinked their eyes sleepily.

"I liked that story." Anna murmured with a yawn after her father returned the wooden horse to her hands.

"Me too." Luke agreed as he got out of his father's lap with Anna and with the dolls back in his hands.

"Time to go to bed you two. Go to your room and I'll tuck you in." Linda said with a small chuckle as she hugged the twins before they went to their room. Then, Aaron picked up his book again with a sigh, and was about to read it until his wife kissed him on the forehead and stood before him.

"Yes Linda?" Aaron asked softly, seeing light concern in her eyes.

"I just wish you would stop filling their minds with silly stories and myths." she murmured before turning on her heel and exiting the room.

"But that story was true." Aaron whispered as he looked at the time, seeing that it was 9:00 PM. Then, he sighed and returned to his book, not noticing the shadow outside the window.

Outside, a Desert Appaloosa Mustang stood, her teal eyes gazing at her old friend's house. "Aaron, I will never forget you." she nickered with her ears pointed towards the window that Aaron was sitting next to. Shiloh had been listening the whole time and with a soft whinny, she turned before galloping into the desert once again, her beautiful mane and tail painting the night wind.

Story: Mystica is all that her name suggests. Not much is known of her fillyhood, or her life in general, as a matter of fact. She is a near-silent mystery who travels alone, living off what she can find and disappearing on long trips. She is seldom seen, and very few horses have heard her voice. Those who have say it's melodic and enchanting-but also terrifying, in a strange sort of way. No one is quite sure why she is this way, but that's kind of to be expected, isn't it? After all, she's only seen on the week of the full moon...

Horse's Name: Taphita
Gender: Mare
Height: 15.4hh
Story:
Long ago where the ground runs red with soil and hot from the sun, a mare was born. Her dam nuzzled her daughter and blessed her with her name based on her colours. My Taphita, she crooned to the filly. Little did she know then what the young innocent filly would grow up to be in that same red world.

Some recall a spotted mare that is elusive, reckless and impossible to approach, even by her own kind. That mare was what the young Taphita became. She grew aggressive and became a loner after she grew too independant and freakish in nature by her kind. She is said to roam by the mesas all on her own with no one by her side.

Taphita bottled hatred inside of her about how she was treated. She never forgave any desert appaloosa mustangs; she even hardened her heart against her mother who as well turned her back on her. On occassions when she felt full of malice, she would finsd some of her kind and surprise a fight amongst stragglers or create chaos in large herds. This only gave her mild satisfaction but never made up for her pain or healed her wounds.

One evening, Taphita was crossing a section of the badlands she inhabited after a semi-productive day of terrorism. She heard high-pitched panicked squeals coming from a desert appaloosa mustang closeby. Curious and feeling a little irritated again with her species, Taphita trotted herself over ready to make their life miserable. When she found the squealer, she felt very dissatisfied. It was a lone weanling screaming desperately for his mother and family who clearly left him behind.

Upon seeing her, the colt froze and began to cower slightly. Man, I didn't even need to do anything, she thought smugly to herself before approaching him. The closer she came, the more anxious the colt seemed until he was ready to bolt blindly away from her. She went to open her mouth and say something terrifying but the sorrel colt's next words silenced her.

"Lady Terror," he barely whispered, frozen in fear.

Taphita sniffed at the foal's sub-par vocabulary in addressing her. "What makes you think that?" she snapped, making him quiver harder.

The unnamed sorrel colt glared at her through eyes soaked in tears. "You scared my family away!" he wailed uncontrollably now, "I grew up being told to fear the terrorizing mare and now she's here and my family's gone!" He burst into inconsolable tears and sunk to the dusty red ground in defeat.

Taphita grew numb inside when the colt said why he was alone. I did this. I'm the reason he's defenseless and alone now. I've become the monster I hated the most... Taphita felt guilt, pain and sorrow for the first time in years. She looked towards the sorrel colt at her feet and extended a muzzle towards him.

"I'm sorry I drove your family away. I'm sorry for all I've done to you. I promise I won't hurt you anymore and that I'll do everything in my power to reunite you with your family," she vowed to him.

The sorrel colt looked up towards Taphita with skepticism in his eyes but he stood and sniffed the rest of his tears away. "I will give you a chance but nothing more."

"That's all I ask."

Horse's Name:
Huyana
A Native American Miwok name that translates to "falling rain", as she's one of the rare ones.

Gender:
Mare

Height:
15.4hh

Story:
Light. Step. Darkness. Step.

With a beautiful sweep of her long, flowing tail, Huyana turned in a perfect circle and reared on her hind legs, holding her pose with elegance and grace. The pale blue and silver luminescence of the crystals reflected off of the water and the walls, making the entire room shimmer. Cobweb-like rays of light broke apart the color on her body as she twisted and turned, making the white sand beneath her hooves a myriad of prints and steps.

Sunshine. Step. Moonlight. Step.

She reared again, her head high as she twirled twice before coming to all fours and resting. Her dance had come to an end. Taking a deep breath, she could smell the fruits of her labor; turning to look at the opening to her secret home, she could see rain falling. It was slow at first but it soon fell in earnest, rewarding what life there was for surviving this long. She smiled, pausing to drink from her small, clear pond. With the sound of a yelp and sliding sand, Huyana looked up to see the form of a small canine come into her home. It's tiny body was the same color as the white sand, and tribal markings were etched onto his fur in the traditional color of his kind.

"Hello little Fennec, " she said gently, her long tail swishing with interest.

"Ah, a horse!" He exclaimed, his voice young and slightly nervous. His ears tilted back apologetically. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean-"

"It's alright. You were only seeking shelter. You are welcome to stay until the storm passes." The little Fennec fox simply nodded a shy thanks, moving away to settle himself into a tight area between the crystals. Huyana listened intently to the rustling of the little one's fur and the ways its breathing slowed to a crawl. Moving to the top of the incline, she noted how the runoff she'd created was getting too shallow; she'd fix it once the rain passed. She stood and watched the water fall; in the distance, she could see others of her herd moving about, making their way to their own shelter as the sun dipped below the horizon. She shook her mane as a blast of wind sent water spraying into her face. She threw her head back and smiled. Tomorrow she would go check on the foal. Turning back to her home, she made her way to the central pile of soft white sand, where she had been dancing just a few minutes before. She laid down gracefully, curling her tail close to her body. Unable to sleep, she laid awake that night and just listened to the sound of her rain falling to the beat of the night.

~*~

First light broke with the sound of cactus finches darting in the plans outside of her home. Huyana was unsure as to when she had fallen asleep, but she figured that it didn't matter. At least she had slept. Standing up slowly, she stretched each leg and shook the sand from her coat. She was going to meet the bachellor Mustang that had taken in a foal; he had said that the foal's mother had been captured and taken in to be tamed, but the foal hadn't been caught. And though the little filly was only a normal horse, not a DAM like herself, she still offered to raise it. Drinking from the pond once more, she turned to leave.

"Hey! Wait!" She suddenly heard, the little fox struggled to squeeze out from the crystals. "You shouldn't go out there," he said. "There are humans and dogs patrolling the desert."

Huyana paused and looked at the little one. "It's alright, I'll be careful," she said. "I have a new daughter to retrieve."

The fox cocked his head in confusion, but didn't ask for any details. he thought for a moment, not wanting to be left alone with those dogs. "Can I come with you then? Those dogs are vicious," he said. Huyana nodded, and he hopped up easily onto her back and settled onto her withers. "You're tall," he commented, the ground looking a lot farther down than it really was. There was silence for a few minutes and Huyana climbed from her home. "I'm Sorin, by the way," the little fox murmured.

"Nice to meet you, Sorin," she said. "I'm known as Huyana." As the two emerged into the heat of the day she closed her eyes appreciatively, feeling the warmth of the sun on her coat. She stood for a brief moment before moving forward into a trot, seeming to float above the ground so smooth was her gait. A few strides later and she transitioned into a rocking-horse canter, then to an all out gallop. Sorin leaned over her neck, crouching low and entwining his forepaws into her long mane. He could feel every muscle in her shoulders move with her strides, and her breathing came calm and deliberate. Looking to his left he could see a small portion of the DAM herd move into the mountains. To his right there was the camp of the hunters, far down the ridge line. They were too far away to see each other, so that gave Sorin a little more confidence.

A sudden jolt nearly threw him off and his claws dug into Huyana's neck. The fox was quick to release her and apologize, but Huyana seemed unfazed. He noticed then that she had hit the rocky ledges, and she was running full force on the cliff above her herd. They were moving at a slower canter, but Huyana felt the urge to beat them. Her mane and tail waved like banners, obscuring most of Sorin's vision, but he could see part of the upcoming cliff. "Huyana...." He said nervously, but she showed no signs of stopping. She actually pushed herself faster.

Coming to the very edge of the drop she jumped down, the drop having only been three feet or a little under. She landed perfectly beside the lead stallion though she didn't miss a beat, smiling at him as he passed. He took a moment to race her, his shorter mane waving crazily with the wind, but the lighter, more athletic mare quickly outdistanced him. Sorin hung on for dear life as she finally reached the flatlands, barreling for a little-known oasis in the middle of the desert. A few plants grew around a small watering hole, one that was now swollen with the rain she had called. As they got closer, a herd of mustangs appeared in the distance, two of them standing closer to the DAM and her Fennec companion than the others. These were normal horses, hovering at around 15.3 Hands and stockier than the DAMs. She slowed to a stop, her movements careful and majestic, slipping back into her more formal personality.

"Ah, Requiem, it's nice to see you again," she said as her breathing returned to normal, her long mane falling messily over her neck.

"Huyana," Requiem replied, the stallion nodding his head. "Good to see you too, I'm glad you made it. I brought Talia with me; she's ready to go to a new home. None of the mares with the herd are able to take her being as between the humans and this year's drought have made things rather.... difficult."

"I brought rain last night, but I don't know where all of the other rain-callers are. I haven't seen one in quite some time. More rain will come soon, though. I'm sure of it." Requiem nodded, hopeful of her prediction. He turned to look as a little black and white filly came trotting up, her gate bouncy despite the sand's resistance.

"Huyana!" She whinnied, moving towards the mare and nuzzling her. The little filly had just been weaned, so she was ready to truly have a mother.

"My little Talia," Huyana nickered, nuzzling the foal. "You're getting so big. Are you ready to go home?"

The filly bounced excitedly for a moment, nickering 'yes' again and again. Huyana smiled. She nodded a goodbye to Requiem; she'd meet him again once Talia was old enough to fend for herself, and then the filly would rejoin her herd as an adult. Turning, Huyana settled in at walk; once Talia said her own goodbyes and caught up, the DAM mare moved into a trot and then a slow canter. Talia kept up pretty easily, surprisingly, though Huyana knew that her adopted daughter wouldn't be able to keep up for very long. The sun was just reaching its high peak, so they had plenty of time, luckily.

Or so Huyana thought.

Suddenly there was a rumble in the ground, the clanking of metal and whipping sound of ropes filling the air. Huyana gave a small gasp, and Talia seemed to lose her cool. The foal took off, running as fast as her little legs would take her. Huyana was right behind her. "Get into the chasms!" Huyana whinnied. Unluckily for them, though, two of the wranglers spotted them.

"That's one o' them fancy ones, ain't it?" One of the men said, looking like some drunk straight out of an old Western movie.

"Yes," his son replied, eyes narrowing. "They're worth quite a lot. Let them go after the mustangs, this one is ours." Wheeling their horses around, the two humans spurred their horses on, after the DAM and her companions.

"Sorin!" Huyana yelled. "Take Talia through the chasm veins back to my home. I'm sure you remember it. Sorin nodded and, in a moment of unusual bravery leapt onto the foals back.

"Listen to my voice and I'll guide you home," he said. And just like that the foal and fox turned into the canyon equivalent of a "side road", one too small for the bigger horses to follow. That left Huyana and the humans, but now, Huyana could go full force.

Leaping from between the chasm walls, Huyana ran across the plateau and into yet another crack in the rock, the humans hot on her tail. Far in front of her, she could see a canyon, and it was big. There was no way she could jump that! It was too far, and her legs.... NO, she thought. She was a rare one, a rain bringer. She could do this. She was strong and fearless. Alsoomse. Independent. She pushed herself even faster, her hooves an echoing thunder against the red-clay walls that surrounded her. Her nostrils flared as she came closer to the edge; suddenly to her left the wall dropped off into the canyon. Stealing a glance, she realized that is was very, very deep. Suddenly the canyon was upon her and she put all of her strength into her hind legs, vaulting herself as high and as far as she could. And, finally, with a heavy thud, she landed perfectly on the other side. And she didn't stop.

Finally the sound of her own hoofbeats were the only thing she heard. She ran until the moon began its reign, and she found her surroundings becoming more and more familiar. Finally she reached her little cavern beneath the sand and walked exhaustedly into the small space. She looked down at Talia and Sorin, the two already asleep. She smiled softly.

This was her family, and she wouldn't have it any other way.

((I gave her two companions, my Fennec fox character Sorin and one of my equine characters, Talia. I'll provide references later.))

Story:

Darkness. That's how my life began, in utter darkness. Then there was light. My eyes protested, they didnt wanna be in this bright world. Next came the smell, they were strong but the longer I was here the dimmer they where. I struggled to stand knowing instinctively if I didn't I wouldn't have ever. Here it was be strong or you die. As I suckled from my mother, I didn't realize how truly lucky I was.
