Story: (From inside the mind of Zinc)
My body had finally decided to wake when I noticed how unsually cold it was. An unprovoked shiver began to creep down my spine and I stretched out my aching slept-on neck. Even for such a high altitude, this temperature seemed quite unusal. What an odd feeling...this morning. I smelled the dew on the ground of my mountainside home, which I noticed was practically crystalized from the frosty air. My family was still asleep and the last thing that I would want to do is wake them. I rose to my shaky hooves and stretched my legs, then quietly exited the area. My mouth was dry and the river was only a short gallop away from my herd's current residence. It was the main reason that we had settled there, but it was also a danger, because the water attracts other creatures besides ourselves. Some were dangerous so we always had to always be on guard.
I rounded the rocky corner and could now see my destination. The smell alone triggered enthusiasm and I gleefully trotted to the water's edge for a sip. When I began to drink I realized how thirsty I must have been. I hadn't had anything to drink, or even eat, since yesterday morning. My herd was mostly traveling along rock the previous day, and grass was scarce.
I tilted my ears, and quickly looked to my east side. A curious sound had caught my attention. It was loud and sounded almost like thunder. What could it possibly be? It was echoing from up the river about a mile. It made me uneasy but it was still quite a while away so I didn't think anything of it. Then I saw it. A tree tompling over about the same distance from where the unknown sound had originated. Being the coward that I am these occurances made me uneasy. Something was wrong, and I didn't want to stay to find out what it was. I took some steps backward, ready to head back and warn the others when another tree tompled over less than a few hundred feet from me. I panicked and began galloping. Straight through the river I went, without even thinking and the water got up to my head. No matter how hard I pushed I couldn't keep my self grounded in the river's heavy current, and I floated downstream. I had managed to keep my mouth and nostrils above the surface and, ironically, I flailed like a fish out of water.
It all happened so fast but out of the surrounding forrest I saw a black blur run to the edge of the river. It was keeping pace with myself and as I was watching I hit my head on something. Hard. And I blacked out.....
When I awoke I was thankfully on the sweet, sweet ground again. The "black blur" was lying not far to my left. He was now in focus, and he was the most stunning thing I had ever seen. A handsome stallion. His red eyes were gleaming into mine, and he smiled and nodded. "You're finally awake," he said, "You hit your head on tree that the two-leggers knocked down into the water. It was hard, but I was able to get you back to land without having to watch you drown."
I blushed with embarrassment. "Thank you for saving my life. May I ask my savior's name?"
He eyes wandered away from mine and danced off into deep thought. When he finally rejoined my gaze he replied with, "Thiessen. My name is Thiessen. We were so worried that you were going to have brain damage."
Whoa, whoa! Hold on. He just said we. That means there are more than one. And wait. Did he say that he thought I would have brain damage?! So rude!
An orangish-colored mare appeared out of the forrest. She snuck up behind him and playfully nipped at Thiessen's mane. Frightened, he jumped "oh, it's just you," he said, "She's awake."
In a very spunky voice this mare replied. "I know she's awake! What? Do you think I'm blind or something?"
She directed herself to me and asked, "How are you honey? Did you receive any brain injuries?"
Again with the brain injury thing. What an odd question. "Excuse me? A brain injury? Of course not!.....Where is my herd?"
The two of them turned to eachother with questionable looks on their faces. And turned back towards me. "We're sorry. They are gone. We couldn't catch up with them, but we were hoping......"
The stallion interrupted, "-What Seraphim is trying to say is that we would like you to join our herd. That is, if you'd like to?"
And this is the question that started it all. At the time, I thought that they must be crazy. Taking me from my herd, insulting my perfectly normal brain, and then asking me to join them? I thought they were clinically insane. But even so, I reluctantly said yes. This is how I've joined my incredible two best friends and cantered out into the adventure of a lifetime with them!
