☭ It was as the sun glared down at me as I tended the garden when I felt it. Hands deep in the earth, pulling away the stones to lay down plants, sweat trickling across my heated skin, when suddenly a shocking chill ripped through me. I gasped, wrenching my bare hands from the soil to hug myself. My runes turned from where thay played in the shade, peering at me as if they wondered what I was doing. "Nothing, I swear." They resumed their playful romping, and I glanced around, before resuming my task. The shock rippled through me again within seconds, piercing my heart and I cried out in anguish.
I surged to my feet, moving deeper into the forest that surrounded my cottage, leaving behind my garden and Runes, something completely unlike me. I ran, searching for what I wasn't sure, only knowing that something needed me. I tore through the thick underbrush, my skin and clothing ripping under my senseless searching, but I heeded none of it. I heard my Runes cooing and chirping as they circled, concerned about my bizarre behavior but I only forged onward. The deeper the forest the less light fell and the harder it was to see, and my Runes were becoming more agitated by my frenzied search.
I nearly fell into the cave, I was so lost in my quest, and I stumbled, falling to my knees in the small opening in the ground. It was small, musty and full of plant life. For some reason it surprised me to find all the vegetation in the cave, until I saw it. Nestled deep in the foliage, barely visible was a large green stone. I crawled closer, and gently picked up the pulsing stone, only to find it wasn't a stone! It was a rune egg, glowing with life and vitality, brown leather straps tightly wrapped around it.
I marveled at it, stroking the smooth shell softly, until the same chill as before filled me, and I knew it was the egg. I was confused, nothing seemed amiss, until I heard the soft rumble, and the back of the cave groaned, and rocks came tumbling down. I screamed, tucking myself carefully around the egg as dirt and rocks rained down.I was struck heavily, but not fatally. When at last the cave stopped falling down I peered around through the dust, and knew. Gently I lifted the egg up, making sure it was still safe. "It's okay Dimitri. I've got you. You're safe now." I crooned and a warm, joyful feeling filled me. He knew he was safe. ☭
