name: Eurydice
prompt:
"Royalty? How quaint. You expect of me regal attire, proper words and actions? Well, I'll have you know, I was once upon a time, a charming young kit. I bowed to the rules laid before me, embraced the court of the land." Eurydice exhaled shakily, stepping out across the broken courtyard.

"Perhaps I am still royalty. I cannot get rid of my blood after all." Eurydice sighed, sitting upon a cracked bench like a ghost sits upon its throne. "However, let it not be thought that I am at all prim and proper these days. One might liken me to that of a feral beast. A ghost stuck in the past, while also marching through the present." Eurydice growled threateningly.

Looking at his paws, he leapt up, tail swishing behind him in agitation. "Remember that tail? The one of Beauty and the Beast? Well...I suppose I should have learned my lesson from that tale as old as time." He laughed bitterly, looking up towards the moon casting its glow upon the courtyard of wilted flowers and lost souls.

"Forget it. You're merely a puppet for the new regime. An empire built on lies and bloodshed." Eurydice shook his head, finally meeting the gaze of a rather uncomfortable looking kalon. "What would you know about true royalty?" He snarled liked a wounded animal backing away from its predator.

Once a prince of high prestige and valor, now sat the ghost of a man. A soul left to wander the earthly plains for all eternity. A wretched, wrecked heart once so full of life and kindness to give and spread. A crown does not make the man. [275 Words]

        name: Elric
Imagelric lived life as if he was someone the world was made to follow. He spoke as if words bent to his grace, but also listened as if everyone deserved an audience. His presence could attract a crowd with how alluring and captivating he was. He carried the aura of someone who was meant to be obeyed, but was loved and not resented for it. He was truly fit to rule the kingdom of Kyria.

If only he had been born a prince.
        Image

Instead, Elric was born a peasant with not a drop of royal blood. Dirt masked his beautiful features. His youthful body only knew aches and pains from manual labor. As he toiled in the fields, he would steal glances towards the castle in the distance, dreaming of what life would be like if only fate had been kinder to him. He spun those dreams into such stories that entire fields stopped working just to hear him. Truly, Elric could not imagine living and dying as a peasant. This life felt too small for what he was meant to become.

When he came of age, Elric ran off to become a squire. A Kyrian knight, charmed by his charismatic words and impressed by his strength, took Elric on and mentored him. Years of manual labor had already trained his body well and his ambition only took him further. Elric was already making quite an impression when he had reached knighthood. For the first time, his name was spoken amongst nobles and he finally achieved a higher status than the one he was born into.
And yet, this was not enough.
Image

Sir Elric wanted more. He set out to make even more of a name for himself. Bards would make songs and ladies would gossip about him; not only about the quests he embarked on, but of his beauty and grace as well. These stories would carry his name all the way to the throne and the king of Kyria himself summoned Sir Elric to place him amongst the royal guard. This was an honor that few would ever achieve, and Sir Elric had been given a duty more precious than any other: to protect the royal heir. The heir was well-mannered but rebellious, their restlessness often had them sneaking away from the castle in disguise. Sir Elric, dutiful as ever, would follow and disguised himself alongside the heir. They’d be laughing beneath borrowed cloaks, walking the streets as if they ruled none of them, and they quickly became inseparable.

The royal court began to whisper of the beautiful knight that won over the rebellious heir and of their glances that would linger too long during public events. Some even said that Elric could be the one; that the heir might even love him enough to break the biggest taboo and marry the knight who was once a commoner.

And perhaps they really would have.

If only he wasn’t waiting for the opportunity to strike.

"Apprentice to the Royal Court's High Wizard"
[ 500 / 500 words + 250 / 250 bonus for 750 total ]

Cecil had always considered himself someone of sophisticated refinement. He kept his hair long and pristine, his robes always freshly cleaned, and his appearance as prim as he could manage. In the royal court appearances were everything.

Cecil happens to be the only apprentice magical advisor to High Wizard Malverias, and as such, he typically spent most of his days mixing potions or deciphering old grimoires filled with centuries-old ink and learning how the High Wizards from before used and trained their magic.

During the time he has for himself, he's often practicing his magic or out stargazing late at night in the palace gardens. It was on one such night that he found himself in a peculiar situation. After a long day learning basic enchantments, he went for a stroll through the gardens. As he relaxed on a marble bench staring up into the sky, his tail idly flicked behind him as the stars glittered above. It was peaceful for two minutes before he was attacked by two hooded figures restraining him from behind.

With a dagger held to Cecil's throat, one of the figures spoke- "Not a word from you, Princess." The second figure circled in front of him and chuckled lowly as he tied Cecil's hands together with rope. Cecil had a confused look on his face, unsure if he had heard correctly.

Blinking, his ears flicking slightly atop his head. "Princess...? Oh. Oh, I see..." A smirk played at his lips, the hooded figure in front of him taking it as confirmation. Being mistaken for royalty wasn't the worst thing that could happen to him, at least he'd be safe. They wouldn't be daft enough to harm their bargaining chip. The men hoisted Cecil up onto the back of a horse after dragging him through every dark corner they used to sneak through the palace.

" I'll give you credit where it's due... you really found a way into the gardens pretty easily." Cecil said with a soft laugh as they rode out of the lower districts. "How much are you trying to ransom me for...? You know the King- my father I mean," he corrected, hoping they hadn't caught that, "would do anything to ensure my safety."

The outlaw on the same horse as him spoke, "So much that we're going to be set for life." The other agreed. "So much gold."

It hadn't been long before they reached the kidnappers' hideout, and once they settled in a bit the larger of the two had spoken again. "Once we get paid, we'll let you go unharmed."

"How thoughtful," Cecil said with a smile wide enough that he couldn't hide it anymore. "Though, I fear that the King may find your ransom letter... amusingly misdirected."

Their faces of confusion matched Cecil's earlier in the night, when he was first abducted. It was priceless. The wizard's apprentice couldn't hold the laugh that escaped him- the rich, musical sound echoing throughout the small hideout as the light from the campfire danced in Cecil's eyes. "I'm no princess, my good ruffians. I'm Cecil, apprentice magical advisor to the High Wizard, though I appreciate the compliment."

The confusion on their faces turned to despair.

"Don't fret though," Cecil said, waving a hand casually. "You'll only spend a little bit of time in the stockade; I'm only an apprentice after all." With a few whispered words and hand gestures, the rope binding his wrists fell to the ground at his feet. "I'd appreciate it if you made this as easy for me as I did for you, as you accompany me back to the palace." He teased, that playful smirk curling at his lips as he used another spell to bind the would-be kidnappers.

They hadn't put up much struggle, either out of embarrassment or resignation, who knew. He had helped them onto the back of one horse as he rode the other. Stopping at the gate to the palace, Cecil hopped off the horse and waved a knight over.

"These two tried kidnapping me, see to it they find their way into a stockade." The wizard's apprentice smiled once more at the two and thanked the knight for taking over.

The High Wizard after hearing about the entire ordeal had begun picking on Cecil, though in a playful manner, by calling him 'your highness' whenever addressing the apprentice in conversation. It only made Cecil laugh and shake his head, that smile of his rivaling the beauty of the Princess herself.

Chalice to mirror,
Sword to glass,
May thy eye see clearer
May thy fate come to pass

Eight for the crown,
Wrought all in gold
Seven to drown,
In depths dark and cold

Six for the second,
The heir to the heir
Five to be beckoned,
By faces and hearts fair

Fourth for the altar,
‘Neath bells bright and clear
Third to ne’er falter,
Ever shielded from fear

Two for the shadow,
Of all who came first
One to watch grow,
The last,
The last of the cursed…

“Count.” Senko’s voice sounded almost bored, his eyes drifting to the window, chin resting casually on the back of his paw. He flicked his tail, something sparkling and shimmering in the soft, golden waves. “How many shards?”

The merchant’s eyes followed the motion. They hesitated, swallowed dryly before they answered. “Er… two?”

“Very good. I thought someone of your profession would be able to count that high at least.” Senko tilted his head idly, gaze still fixed outside the window. “Two shards. Do you know why?”

“Because you are a prince.”

“Heh. Whatever good that is.” Senko snorted. “Everyone that comes here knows the story. Dad broke a magic mirror, and now the pieces haunt his lineage forever or whatever. The one that ruined it all.” He waved one paw. “Have you heard the song? Of my brothers, two will be crown princes, one will fall in love, one will get married, one will be brave, one will see it all…” He trailed off, a shadow flickering over his expression before it returned to detached serenity. “Well. At least I’m not the one that drowned.”

“I-indeed,” the merchant stammered. They had heard that the prince was capricious, but they hadn’t expected the conversation to go like this.

“My brothers will be kings, lovers, and heroes, but I?” He flicked his tail again, the two shards glinting in the light streaming through the window. “I am fated to live forever in their shadows.” His gaze turned suddenly to the merchant, eyes locking together with a strange and feverish intensity. “Right?”

“Your Highness,” the merchant began, delicately, obsequiously, “the wording could mean many things—”

Senko cut them off with a wave of the paw. “We all know what it means,” he snapped, sitting forward suddenly, eyes flaring. A beat, and he sat back again, relaxing once more into leisurely composure. “What do you think? Shall I roll over like a dog and accept my fate? Is ambition useless to me?”

“Your Highness,” the merchant said again, sweat prickling at the nape of their neck, “if you are truly destined to be your brothers’ shadow, then you may as well strive to be the darkest shadow there is. May your enemies never rest easy at night again.”

Prince Senko stared at the merchant for a breath. Two. And then he threw his head back and laughed. Another wave of the paw, and the guards stepped forward. “Give them a permit,” he drawled. “They’ve earned it.”

A pair of steps are heard descending into the dungeon. The light of a torch follows. The young prince sits up from the floor of a prison cell.

"Prince? Are you awake?" The stranger approaches the cell, his torch illuminating the damp stronghold.

"Yes, yes. It is the eve of my death, of course I cannot sleep. Talk to me," he begs.

"Do not assume such is your fate," the visitor murmurs in hushed-tones. He kneels before the prince as he sits in his cell, their faces close in the flickering light. The executioner peels back his hood to reveal that they are close in age.

"Nonsense," he objects, "my own family has condemned me to death. All for simple opposition of policy, no less. My father will see it through in its entirety, I assure you. Executioner, I owe you great gratitude to visit me now. I will not beg for my life, sir, but please hear my objections. My bloodline is tainted with the impurities of corrupt rule and cruel intentions! I ask you one thing, as I lay here now: do not allow that the court produce another heir, lest the corruption that poisons my father continue to plague the people of this kingdom. Promise me this, Executioner."

"Silence," the visitor hushes. "I have seen your morals, Prince. Your heart of compassion has honored even the needy and undesirable. I have no intent to follow the King's orders, if you allow me."

"Executioner, no good things will come to you if you disobey my father's command!"

"You have done for me and my family, Prince, more than any noble ancestors before you. I owe you life more than any other falsely-accused. There is a quiet village outside the court's domain where I can take you, and you will be revered for your kindness." The visitor hands a leather vest to the prince through the cell's bars.

"Wear this underneath your clothing, and keep it hidden. Tomorrow, you will die by hanging. I will place a hood over your head, then the noose. The gallows will fall, and you will suspend, but you will not yet be dead. Stay still until the darkness of night comes, and I will escort you to freedom."

"And I will no longer be the throne's heir?" the prince asks.

"Not you, not anyone," he answers, "so long as you never return to the kingdom."

The prince quickly undoes his tunic and conceals the executioner's harness on himself. "Thank you, Headsman."

"I will see you tomorrow, Prince. Try to rest."

    *************

The executioner successfully escorted the prince to safety that night, many years ago. The king, now too old to bear sons, reigns solemnly on his own. He grows old and frail within the castle walls as tensions spread among the peasants outside, rebellion on the brink. Riots grow commonplace. The young executioner continues his duties as courtly headsman, despite his own objections. He finds peace in upholding the promise the fugitive prince asked of him many moons ago, to ensure that the kingdom is denied a blood-heir.

On an unseemly night, the executioner is invited to the bedchamber of the monarch. He kneels before the king.

“Honorable Executioner,” the king begins, “you and your fathers have served as the royal headsmen of this crown for generations. You have witnessed many tragedies, and tonight I inform you of another.”

He coughs weakly, reclining in his bed. “I have fallen ill. I have but only a few moons left,” he sputters.

    “Aye,” the executioner acknowledges.

“You know well I have no sons. No one was more loyal than you, even when I ordered the execution of my own blood. These people need a symbol to lead them… not blood. Become my heir in secrecy, Headsman. Claim to be my son and inherit my riches. This is my final command.”

    “And If I do not?”

“The people will maul themselves to earn the crown! Without the promise of an heir, my legacy cannot survive. Please, Executioner. You are the only one fit to carry my name.”

    “Aye, Majesty.”

    *************

The executioner is announced as a long-lost son. Days after coronation, a hooded figure rides into town to speak with the new king. When meeting, the visitor passes to him a vest made of leather.

From behind the hood comes a familiar voice. “You lent me this some time ago. I have come to return it, while congratulating your coronation. My condolences to my--" he stutters, "your father.”

Postby FluffyBirdie » Fri Oct 17, 2025 9:50 pm

FluffyBirdie 750079 | Kichiro | 739 words
Kichiro couldn't sleep, as usual. Every time he closed his eyes, he would see the kingdom as it was under his father, and that image in his mind always brought along a sense of homesickness for that era. It was over four years now since King Zander came to power, though that cheerful and bright memory felt like it was decades away in the past. Like a dream, or a vision from another life. Unattainable.

Kichiro sighed, sitting up and rubbing his face in his hands. There's no point in sleeping now that he was in such a desolate mindset. Staring at the dark ceiling whilst trying to sleep was a waste of his time anyway, and he had never been so tired during the day that he had to take a nap. He could so do much more during these quiet hours to help support the kingdom. He could train so that he was more fit and prepared for anything, especially for the day when Zander's reign topples. He could check the letters for any diplomatic events occurring in neighbouring countries, or for any complaints from the common people he could handle. Especially the latter; talking to citizens were always a pleasure. And he would be ensuring that the public swung in his favour because he had supported them. When the critical day occurs, the people would advocate for the beloved children, not for their king who rarely serves the public.

As the prince stood and dressed, he decided on a course of action for tonight: training, then going through any requests. Thinking about a resolution for any problems during a practice session led to distracted swings, and he wanted to focus properly on them. Zander would not be felled by someone with poor discipline. After strapping his scabbard onto his belt and checking his appearance out of habit, Kichiro gently opened his door and slipped out, not wishing to disturb any of his siblings or the patrolling guards. He knew they all meant well for him, but rest was not a productive use of time, not at this moment. Once he was properly training, it should be easier to stay there and convince anyone trying to drag the restless royal into bed that he truly could not sleep.

Wanting to look at the stars instead of training indoors, he headed towards the walls of the castle, walking in corridors less frequented by people. The sun would be up in a few hours, he presumed, not having bothered to check the time. Arriving at the walkway that allowed soldiers to look over the castle walls, he paused, taking in the sight of the sleeping city and breathing in the cold night air. The quiet, almost mystical view before him was what he needed to protect, and with the welcome reminder in mind, he pulled out his sword, and began his usual routine.

His attempts to keep his mind clear were pointless though - worries and anger came in, especially now that he can see the castle and its highest spire, where Zander resided. His uncle was...cruel. Harsh. Vile. Almost jokingly so. Kichiro gritted his teeth. Come on now. Focus.

King Zander was...someone he was going to defeat. Through any means. As the eldest, it was his responsibility. The throne went to Zander instead of him as he was away, learning in another kingdom. To think that he was barely accepted back even as the crown prince, and to think somehow the throne was not given to him on his return... The politics of the kingdom have shifted greatly since Zander came into power. So great that Kichiro had no ability to seize the throne. But he will. He will. Maybe it would end up with one of his siblings, maybe he would be executed for treason, but as long as Zander was no longer the king and his family was in charge, things would be fixed.

His swings were rough, his form poor. Kichiro stomped his feet in annoyance, before stopping entirely. It was clear he wasn't going to train well, not when he was this irritated. He sent a glare towards the king's spire, feeling that ever-constant hatred stirring and boiling. No, enough. He sheathed his weapon and walked briskly to the inner courtyard, where he could train indoors. He needed to practice. Learn. Plan. Refine.

Zander will fall. And Kichiro didn't care if he fell with him.

name: Rex

I’m no king. I’ve never been anything close to royalty… unless you count my days as the dashing prince slaying monsters with a sword made of a nicely shaped stick when I was little. But really, does playing pretend even count?
Hm… well, yes. Perhaps I have a little bit of noble blood running in my veins. But nobility is not royalty, no, most nobles are not even close. Do you not see the grime and ash which stains me? Have you not seen me wandering restlessly through the night, without a place to return to? Why are you even asking me this? Isn’t that a bit tasteless?

I jest, friend. I would never punish or insult simple curiosity. In fact, I want to reward it. Can you keep a secret? Come on, get a little closer, I’ll whisper it to you.

I am no king… but your king might look like me soon.

As of now, Rex is no king, and he may never be. Their world is full of monsters, magic, and smaller-scale conflicts, though magic-users are far from common. The current king is without magic, though far from powerless. Rex, however, was one of the minority born with those special abilities. The current king hopes to monopolize the magic-users by bringing them into his personal guard and army, often sending his followers to recruit them with the options of “yes” and “of course” being the only acceptable answers. Denying the offer multiple times will mark you as an enemy to the crown. Rex takes offense to this behavior.
While he was lucky enough not to be caught practicing magic while young, in order to do so he was forced to leave his birth-family and live in hiding, denying the noble roots he was born into just for the chance to be able to see his parents on occasion. While he’s gone out of his way to enjoy his life thoroughly, he cannot stand to think that, of the ones who harnessed their abilities young, he is considered a lucky one and still had to give up so much. So much so, in fact, that he’s decided to take matters into his own hands. While he may not be the tactical leader of his group of rebels, a bit too playful and impulsive, his charm and bullheadedness have earned him his spot as the face. And so he fights, his swashbuckler nature earning him allies and enemies alike. His heart may be good, but his actions can often be a little…. Explosive.
As for what he meant in his last sentence—whether he meant the current king would end up covered in grime like him, a wanderer, or if he himself might one day be king? That will depend on how his little uprising goes. And if nothing at all comes from it, he’ll be glad to have caused some chaos all the same.
