the earthy aroma of espresso wafts through the air, accompanied by the twin hums of soft tunes and chitter chatter. the atmosphere was nice, here in this little side-street cafe. but nothing was nicer than teasing others, and that was their main mission today.

aetherstar lets out a drawn out sigh, dramatically emphasizing feigned distress. the other looks on, agitated, whiskers twitching furiously and eyes darting about to everything that moves.

"aether? bear.. berry..?" a barista calls, pushing two cups forward onto the pick-up counter. bearberry leaps up in an anxious whirlwind. "... i'll get it!" she says, rushing over. how endearing. she was clearly very nervous about being here, aether observes. 😏 must've heard high praise of me, huh?

she returns after a moment, a jittery smile plastered on her face as she places a warm cup in front of them. beneath their name, it reads 'warm venti pumpkin spice latte, almond milk, 8 shots espresso, 1 pump maple pecan sauce, 7 pumps pumpkin sauce, light caramel drizzle, light foam, extra vanilla powder, light whip cream, extra pumpkin topping, autumn sugar sprinkle, pinch of salt.' no this is not starbucks it's some random little cafe but they for some reason ripped off their entire probably copyrighted coffee system. don't even question it bro 🤷

they take a sip, foam condensing in a clouded line above their lip. "mmm, just the way i like it." their gaze lifts to bearberry, whose eyes are closed, savoring her simple hot chai tea. "would you like to try?"

her eyes flick open in surprise, face flushing a little (like the flushed emoji) (😳). "what, didn't expect me to be so gentlemanly?" they chuckle, offering the drink to her. she takes a sip of her own, an expression of blissful wonder crossing her face for a brief moment.

"w-wow, i wasn't expecting it t-to be so..." she murmurs.

aether hums gleefully. "perfect for fall, isn't it?" all they receive in return is a small nod... and then the table falls back into silence.

well, might as well get to the point.

"so 🙈" they start, reaching out to place a hand atop the other's. "what are we?"

bearberry coughs up her chai tea that she'd just drank from, nearly spitting it out all over the table and their connected hands. "wh-what?! 😨😨"

"relax, i'm just teasing!" aether laughs. "though i mean..." they trail off, humor glimmering in their gay eyes. "but seriously though, like, our partners have had an entire litter of tiny-little-baby-godlings-that-are-somehow-unrelated-and-full-of-lore together, and then there's us. where do we fall into this whole big thing?"

bearberry's brow furrows, whiskers askew. "y-yeah, i guess you're right. i'd n-never thought of it that way..."

"yeah, and just because we got a divorce doesn't mean i'm not entitled to some kind of compensation—" they begin to mutter, cutting themself off in a hurry before they can finish. "uh, i mean. i'm just confused as to where that leaves us, y'know? are we really just members of the our rizz accidentally made a god fall in love with us club and nothing more? we could always get a little... payback in 😏 if you know what i'm sayin' 😏😏"

a sheen of rose-red tints her face as she glances off to the side in contemplation. "what a-are you saying..?"

aether grins. "glad you asked!" they slide out of their seat and step over to the other side of the table, dripping with unbridled confidence and pure passion. bearberry shrinks a little in her chair.

"w-wh— 😳"
