Prompt:A kit once asked me, "Sunfish, howโd you lose half your leg?"
Now, this is a very good question. A very, very good question. And the answer, my dear friends, is one of bravery, cunning, and absolute, unrelenting stupidity.
It all started with Lightningfur and his big mouth.
"You wouldnโt last a day as a RiverClan cat," he sneered, his whiskers twitching with smugness.
Now, I may be a proud ThunderClan warrior, but I also happen to be an idiot. And if thereโs one thing I cannot tolerate, itโs being told I canโt do something. I absolutely can. Most of the time, I should not, but thatโs beside the point.
So, naturally, I immediately jumped into the river.
Now, for those of you unfamiliar with how rivers work, let me explain:
1: Water is fast.
2: Water is unforgiving.
And 3: Water does not care about your ego.
So, the moment my paws left solid ground, I knew I had made a mistake.
"HELP!" I yowled, because as it turns out, I was not an excellent natural-born swimmer.
Lightningfur was doubled over on the bank, wheezing. "I TOLD YOU, YOU ABSOLUTE MOUSEBRAIN!"
Meanwhile, I was experiencing what some might call a very bad time.
The river was flinging me downstream like a poorly thrown moss ball. I twisted, flailed, and hit approximately twelve rocks, each one more personal than the last. And thenโoh, thenโI saw it.
A log.
Now, normal cats might think, Ah! A log! I shall grab onto it and save myself!
I am not a normal cat.
I thought, Ah! A log! I need to avoid it!
So I attempted to swim away from it, but since I had had no swimming experience whatsoever, I ended up turning myself around and landed SPLAT into a very hard rock.
And that is how, in a series of events that I will never fully understand, I ended up crushed between the rock and the log I had been attempting to get away from.
I tried twisting myself out, but then there was a loud CRACK.
I felt a sudden lightness.
And thenโoh, there it was.
My leg.
Drifting away.
It was actually kind of mesmerizing, in a detached sort of way. I justโฆ watched it. Floating. Tumbling in the current.
Lightningfur was screaming from the riverbank.
"SUNFISH, THATโS YOUR LEG!"
"I know," I said.
"WHY ARENโT YOU PANICKING?"
I tilted my head. "I think Iโm in shock?"
Lightningfur just shrieked.

I paused, letting the words settle, watching as the apprentice in front of me, Squirrelpaw, sat in stunned silence.
His ears twitched. "Thatโsโฆ it?"
I nodded sagely. "Thatโs it."
He opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. "Youโyou lost your leg. To a log."
"Technically, it was a rock. The log just assisted in the process."
Squirrelpaw blinked rapidly. "I was expecting some great battle! Maybe a fox attack! A badger! AโA ShadowClan warrior!"
I shrugged. "Nope. Just the river and a very questionable life choice."
He frowned. "Soโฆ what happened to the leg?"
I gave him my most serious look. "Some say itโs still out there. Floating. Wandering. Seeking revenge."
Squirrelpaw flattened his ears. "You're messing with me."
I leaned in, my voice dropping to a whisper.
"Am I?"
Squirrelpaw promptly turned and left.
Which was fair.
