Cat Name: Sabel
Gender: Female
Rank: Warrior
Clan: IliosClan ⛯
Age: 3 years old
Prompt: 500 words

When Sabel was just a kit she loved winter, though she hadn’t had any idea what it was at the time. Sasha, Sabel’s mother, told her and her siblings about the outside world to help them fall asleep. For her siblings Sasha’s calming voice lulled them to sleep within minutes, but to Sabel she focused on her mother’s stories, asking questions and trying to imagine what the world outside their den looked like. Every night Sasha asked her mother to tell her a new story, until the day her mother told her about winter.

“Mama, can you tell me another story?”

“Of course, listen closely now. I will tell you about another season, the last of the four. I have told you of the lively, sunny spring, the bright, warm summer, and the cool, comforting fall. This season is called Winter, like your brother. Winter is white, but it shines, everywhere you look the land seems to be shimmering like stars do. Winter is cold, colder than any other season, the wind will blow through your fur and leave you shivering. So most stay inside to avoid it, though others like the cold and wind, like I do. During winter, the forest becomes quiet and prey hides from the cold. But they are still there, it becomes hard to hunt, it becomes a challenge. To certain hunters that makes it more exciting when they do catch food, but most of the food during winter is from the stockpile hunted earlier in the year. Our clan hunts well, and even in winter we don’t need all the food, so you and your siblings will never be hungry.”

Sabel still remembered how excited she had been to hear more, so curious of the wonder of the winter season.

“Tell me more, Mama! Please?”

“I suppose I can continue, but you need to go to sleep soon.”

“Yes Mama!”

“During winter, just like rain, pure white sparks fall from the sky. That is called snow, when enough of it covers the ground, the trees, everything, in a layer of white. This snow causes winter to be white and shimmery, without snow, winter would just be cold. No cat is quite sure what causes the snow, but some say they are pieces of stars that have fallen and that is why they shine. Others say they are wishes, and they fall when someone’s wish is granted. I can’t quite say either is true for certain, only starclan could, but I believe it’s both. Because one night, a year ago, I wished on a star that I would have kits, as soon as I finished speaking a piece of snow landed on my nose, and now I have you.”

Every winter since that night Sabel sits in the snow, and thinks of her mother’s story, replaying the words again and again. Sabel wishes every year that when she has kits of her own, they will hear her say that same story and cherish it too.

Cat Name: EbonyElk
Gender:male (he/him)
Rank:elder
Clan: Mangroveclan
Age: 14 years
Prompt:

EbonyElk lay asleep, nestled in the roots of the tree he had called a home for the past moon or so. That *was*, until a meowl rang out in his ears startling him awake. In front of the older cat, sat a young, spikey, golden kitten with a bare face. Not old enough to be on his own, but old enough to run and leap through the bushes and pester him endlessly. The kit plopped down on his haunches and meowed again, as ebony elk lifted himself up to sit straight, inspecting the kitten closely. Bright, energetic green eyes and a little round face.
“Hello young one.. where did you come from?”
However he got no response but a excited meow and a jumping up onto the feet of the kit.
“I see,”
He spoke gently, as though he truly did understand the energetic noises and motions from the little cat.
“Do you have a name, little one?”
He asked with a tilted head.
“S..sun..”
This little kitten had truly warmed the cold old cat’s heart, even if they had only just met.

EbonyElk and SunKit had stuck together forever, from meeting in the wilder-woods, to finding mangrove clan, to SunPaw turning to SunStrike, the two have always been inseparable. And EbonyElk truly sees the fiery cat like his son.

Cat Name: Hooilo
Gender: Female
Rank: Acolyte of the Caring
Clan: Flora Isle
Age: 33yrs
Prompt: [CW: Brief mention of a cat getting sick and passing away]

Hooilo was just barely a yearling when this happened, she had been born the winter before and found herself named after the slightly colder season. She is not sure if the memory is her favorite or not, it has its blessings but it is also a memory absolutely drowned in the sadness of the time. Winter was a time that meant a lot of things, the largest being a time of sadness and death. However it could also mean a time of preservation, and resilience. Hooilo feels like this all closely matches what will turn out to be the most important thing to ever happen to her prior to today.

It all started when she was traveling through an unfamiliar part of the forest, she heard the saddest singing she had ever heard in her short little life. It was a song about love and loss. She slowly crept towards where she heard the singing, mindful they were very close to some twoleg homes. Eventually she could see a strange box with a hole cut in the front, inside was a she-cat with four little kits that couldn't be more than a few days old. She slowly moved closer until she could settle down in front of the odd nest, making sure she was as harmless looking as possible to the older she-cat.

The stars twinkled above them, as if responding to the Queen's song. As if the stars themselves were also mourning for the lost. Hooilo laid there, looking up at the larger Queen, framed by the strange nest with the glittering night sky above her and couldn't help but think despite her sorrow she looked strong. She seemed to represent the resilience of the season. Eventually her song came to an end and she opened her eyes. The Queen startled to see the younger she-cat laying there.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you... your song sounded so sad but also so beautiful. Has the winter taken someone from you?" She asks carefully, she can't imagine any other reason a Queen would be singing so mournfully with such young kits.

"I-- Yes.... my mate got sick and passed yesterday just before the sun was at its peak. I'm Kulua... and you?" She asks curling protectively around her kits.

"I'm Hooilo, I'm so sorry for your loss. May Manu Koraka gently guide your love's shimmer to the afterlife." she repeats the gentle blessing her own Queen had taught her was the appropriate response to the loss of family.

"Thank you..." Kulua murmurs tucking her long tail over her face, not seeming up for talking any further tonight.

Hooilo thinks that's just fine, the Queen is mourning and deserves to work through this sadness however best suits her. She'll stay, at least for a little while. Kulua could use a friend through this hardship, this challenge of the Winter. Above them both unseen the stars almost seem to wink.

Cat Name: Rhene (Formerly), Phulássōskia.
Gender: Female.
Rank: Divine.
Clan: Astron.
Age: Immortal, estimated to be less than a millennia.
Prompt: 500 words. Apologies if there are any errors.
In consequence of the simple fact Phulássōskia is the sole divine risen of Hestia's paws, she cannot recall the majority of her past life. However, there is one sole memory her mind refuses to forgo - one of which is what she denotes as "the fondest memory with a half-brother prior to death". The memory is as follows:

Frigid spurs of air born upon the summit of the silver-saturated horizon swiftly trickled through the composition of Towering Root stem and scarcely shifting wings of leaves donning the firm rock arches of the farthest northern quarters belonging to Phaethon with each comprehensive beat whereupon Rhene deftly tread closer in proximity to such, leading the interwoven adornment of the threshold ajar and languidly adjusting her gaze to the abrupt flood of voided expanse permeating the quarter prior to settling upon the shivering form of her brother perched atop the softened cluster of moss serving as a makeshift bedding, therein she resolved to cautiously prodding her muzzle against the chocolate tabby fur of his side in an endeavor to wake him upon meeting his side by absent-minded pawsteps - the vaporized bursts of breath erupting steadily from her throat pooling subtly against her brother's side at the prompt.

"Come one, Phaethon." Rhene whispered, lest their superiors hear. "Get up."

"Mmgh..." Phaethon groaned, stirring in his position. "Why?"

The humid streams of Rhene inhale thereafter fostered an instinctive hiss of faint irritation, "Adventure. Let's go."

"What are you talking about?" Phaethon slurred the nickname-borne question, groggily staggering to his paws nonetheless.

"Follow." Rhene tersely ordered, manuevering her paw pads against the coarse rock-laden flooring from which she came.

Abruptly halting the tufts of white fur binding the anatomy of her paws directly afore the bathes of silver soaking the cave's entrance, Rhene inbreathed the heady aromas of crisp abundance and the rich nectar of stillness sheening the forest beyond into the avoli weaved into her lungs, swiftly darting into the clusters of snow settled beyond the entrance in bouts of practiced ease drawn upon her limbs in spite of the biting of the ice gnawing at her paw pads - juxtaposing Phaethon's brief hesitancy at the prompt. A distinctive mosiac of sown white specks clinging to her pelt as she estatically leapt down the various hills entertained in winter's mark and much further from the cave, whilst her brother, inchmeal, advanced down the slopes in tremorous shifts.

Phaethon grumbled beneath the sheer weight of chill bleeding into his pelt, "Akakia, slow down!"

"Owl, quicken your movements!" Rhene teased in reply, to which Phaethon merely lashed the summit of his tail.

"There isn't any need to-" Phaethon began, interjecting himself at the prompt of the viridescent pools of his irises settling upon a knot of grass blades lacking the snow's stroke.

"What's that?" Rhene questioned, pivoting.

Phaethon sedately pressed the tufts of white fur binding the seams of his chest to the bitter earth, positioning his nose upon the composition.

The memory blurs from then.

    Cat Name: sergio
    Gender: male
Rank: porridge chef (formerly a scholar)
    Clan: faerie
    Age: seventy moons old
    Prompt: word count: 500 words

the day the hesu came, the icy bowels of his homeland became molten with fire brought from the deepest pits of hell.
frozen windowpanes fogged and fractured, the sound of it like buckshot ricocheting through time and space. the flicker and hiss and burn of ice as it gargled and frothed into blows of steam. a deathrattle of fire and woodsmoke.

gods- they were worse than he remembered. yet the scholar part of sergio’s mind came alive at the mere sight of the hesu, not yet blunted by years of disuse.

with bodies wrought of iron and blackstone, the hesu was made up of the darkness of a battlefield. all death, fire and honed edges and mouths parted in perpetual hunger for the taste of flesh. but they neither screeched nor snarled. there was just the unnerving sensation of quiet and a tick, tick, tick… like the clicking of time bombs because the hesu were nothing more than a living countdown before the worlds fell apart.

there was a knocking at the door.
by the gods, who was knocking at such a time? but he didn’t allow himself to think. to let the fear and uncertainty to settle at the base of his spine. there was a battle axe in his grip, its leathery pommel unnervingly hot beneath his palm, as he flung the door open.

the glacial northern winds had been replaced with stifling heat, steam and fire.

there was a hooded figure in the doorway, and once the door was opened, they entered with such swiftness that he could barely process it and only startled as the door was slammed shut.

    “sergio! it’s me, roman!”

all he could see was dried blood on roman’s face as it gilded the panes of his face. “gods- what happened to you, my good lad?” he was touching roman’s face, the movement almost instinctual as he inspected the depth of each incision. it was bad- worse than the usual. “what mess have you gotten yourself into this time?"

“i-i messed up bad, sergio. i got this device from someone, then i-i used it and i-i think i messed the worlds up-”

“you what, boy?!” he could not believe it. he could not- “you-you messed with the worlds?”

    “yes i-”

“gods roman! you can’t have been that stupid!” his head spun. his heart in his throat before he took roman by the shoulders. “we are going to work this out, my boy… you hear me? but first we have to get out of here, it’s only a matter of time until the hesu find us-”

there was a knocking at the door.
again? it was probably one of roman’s absurd companions. this time, he didn’t bother with the axe and flung the door open.

    “sergio! don’t-”

the glacial northern winds had been replaced with stifling heat, steam and fire.

but there was no hooded figure at the door.
there was only the head of the hesu as it snarled and swallowed him whole.

    Age: twenty-three moons
    Prompt:
i remember the ticking of broken clocks.

i remember the maddening rhythm that seemed to devour the quiet in that old antique shop. the frilled copper needles of grandfather clocks spinning in a wild frenzy. the clunk of swinging pendulums, knocking into each other as if some twisted shell game. i remember the dust, saints, the avalanche of dust that seemed to rival the iridescent snow pressed against the splintering window.

    ━tickticktickticktickticktick━

stop! this is your last warning.” i pulled my cloak close, tracing the embroidered insignia of a dove with a braided crown of olives and laurels etched over my heart. a broken hourglass crashed against the opposite wall, spilling its molten lifeblood in a shower of glass and sparks. "i said-"

    ━it is thirteen o’clock! thirteen o’clock! thirteen o’━

the high-pitched screech of a cuckoo bird rose above the mechanical whirr of gears and pendulums.

i tried again. “sir? i’m with the imperial legion. i—”

“so you’re one of them.” wildfire eyes cut to mine like a blade ripped from a sheath. “imperial blasphemy is what you are.” you coughed, a wheeze rattling your breath, yet held your chin in a trembling tilt. “go on, arrest me. imperial fool. murderers.”

i remember the heartbeat that hung suspended between us. i remember the embers blazing upon my cheeks, the kindling of wrath simmering in my stomach. i remember touching the sword at my hilt, tempted to see the shine reflected in your seething eyes.

    ━ tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock━

and yet, i remember the deep churning ocean behind your wildfire eyes. the tremulous, moth-thin barrier between rage and unspeakable grief. i remember the weary bruised shadows under your eyes, the frost stealing into the room. the fire hadn’t been lit—not in a long while.

“thought so.” a sneer twisted the gaunt hollows of your cheeks. “i’ve had more than enough of you imperial folk. enough of your compensations. enough of your silver tongues and casual threats. just be done with it. haul me off to your prisons—”

“i’m not going to arrest you.” i settled onto the carpet instead, tracing the intricate weavings of scarlet and blue, the mosaic of a story threaded in each stitch. the syllables weighed heavy on my tongue, unfamiliar. “i’m sorry about your daughter.”

i could barely hear your wheezing laugh above the din of the clocks, nor above the clunk of pendulums. the cuckoo screeched, broken glass glittered and another thread splintered upon the window. but i remember the shadow of defeat, the moment an unbroken chrysalis no longer moves. i remember the daylight refracting off iridescent snow, illuminated the salt stains upon your cheeks.

and i remember letting my cloak fall, all the insignias, all the titles, all the rank and steel and fire. because this battle couldn't be won by steel and threats. it couldn't be won behind an imperial mask. and maybe with all my training, i'd forgotten that there is another way. always another way.

    "tell me about your daughter."
