Equid Name: Morgana
Short Story: [578 words]
Morgana was a sweet and sociable equid in her youth. Every day was filled with sunshine for her, she enjoyed each moment of life with unbrindled joy - you could hardly find a happier equid in all of the mountainside. She eagerly participated in all frolicks and antics her friends came up with - from harmless to sometimes, dangerous ones. And one day, a what seemed to be a fun dare from her buddies brought her to the edge of creepy, overgrown wood. Twisted old trees intertwined with dry, rancid smelling vines, making it look like the branches were swaddling a skeleton of a giant, monstrous beast in them. Her friends dared her to enter the wood, and bring back a colorful rock found only in the puddle at the center of it. One of her friends tried to warn her - it was a bad luck day, a day when you shouldnt go into ominous places, but she stepped in without a fear, dismissing those worries as mere fairytales to keep foals in herd so their mothers can enjoy grazing - but as she was moving through the wood, bad luck had caught her completely off guard. She slipped on old vines, and fell into a pit full of strong smelling, white flowers - the flowers the herd called omens of bad luck, as they always grown around steep, hidden pits and cliffs that claimed many lives. The pit she fell in thankfully wasnt deep, and she wasnt hurt aside from a couple scratches, but thorny flowers stick to her fur and she couldnt shake them off. She decided to just come back as-is, and worry about her fur later, when she'd find a patch of rough grass to groom them off against - the scent of flowers wasnt all that unpleasant, after all. But when she returned to her friends with a colorful rock she so proudly brought them, she found her friends horrified at her approach. She was marked by bad luck! They said, that her unfortunate misstep wasnt just a small thing, it meant bigger bad luck to come. She waved at them carelessly, and all of the young equids hurried back to the herd.
But it was only a beginning of a bad luck streak... the very same evening as she came back to the herd covered in unlucky flowers, one of the elders also stumbled, and hurt their leg. To her horror, the herd blamed her for it! Upset - and truly hurting, probably for the first time in her life - she ran away to groom the last part of flowers out of her fur, but alas, the "bad luck bringer" title had stuck to her already - after just one, small misstep, her entire life started going down... It got worse with each passing moon, more and more the herd blamed every misfortune falling upon them onto Morgana. And with that, her heart started to turn colder. She started to believe all the cruel words said about her, and began feeling herself as evil like others told her. She became increasingly more irritable and harsh, lashing out at her former friends when they argued with her, and with time, started to seek solitude over the herd's company. After one, final, insult to her, blaming her supposed "bad luck" for a predator attack, she turned and walked away, never looking back. She left her home herd in search for someone who would accept her, however "wicked" and "evil" she was.

Equid Name: Witchitah

Short Story: [based from events that have happened with my own horse.]
---
The Fence
Witchitah had always seemed to share a special connection with fences. With a personality as flighty and excitable as hers, she often found herself heading straight for them whenever she was startled or playing.
Once, when she was just four months old, Witchitah and her mother had finally been let out to run after a couple of rainy days spent cooped up in their stall. The two of them bounded through the pasture, Witchitah closely following her mother. Suddenly, her mother veered sharply to the left, narrowly avoiding a steel-post and wire fence. Witchitah, not reacting quite as quickly, slipped on the slick, rain soaked ground. Instead of stopping, she slid forward and with a burst of energy, flew through the air like a seasoned jumper attempting to clear the fence.
But she was unsuccessful... Witchitah’s back left leg became tangled in the fence. With a startled whinny, she stopped midair and ended up in a heap in the ditch on the otherside. Her rear leg was caught in the wire, stretched awkwardly above her. She scrambled and kicked, but the little filly was trapped, lying on her side, unable to free herself. She laid there until rescue came ten minutes later. She was not hurt from the event but her ankle will click from time to time.

Sometime later after being weaned from her mom, Witchitah encountered something strange. A white plastic grocery bag. It fluttered across the dirt, crinkling with every bound. She’d never seen anything like it before, and in an instant, her fear kicked in. She bolted away, her wide eyes fixed on the bag as though it were chasing her.
Then—CRACK!
In her panic, Witchitah crashed straight through a wooden slat fence. She tumbled to the ground, stunned but unharmed. She quickly popped back to her hooves and huffed, looking around, almost embarrassed. The terrifying bag? Completely forgotten.

Equid Name: Jynx
Short Story:

    Named Jynx More Than Once
Jynx was born in the wild and lived her first two years in the wild. Before Jynx was even born, her mother got split from the herd due to a mountain lion attack. Her mother had managed to lose the mountain lion, and walked a stream for a few miles. The stream later became a river, and she hadn't left the river on time. She slipped and lost her footing. She was 5 feet deep in the water and being swept away by the current of the river. After a long rider down the river, she had hit a rock, which hurt, but she managed to use the rock to her advantage. She escaped the river, and collapsed on the ground. Hour later she had given birth to her new born foal, Jynx. Days later, her mother's herd had found the mare and foal.

Jynx tried making friends with other foals of the herd, but every time she tried, something unfortunate would happen. Like once she and two other foals had ventured into a forest alone, and was Jynx's idea. Indeed, unfortunate things had happened, and one of the foals had nearly become a meal for a mountain lion. If it hadn't been for Jynx's mother knowing better than to let her foal stray far due to her misfortunes. The mare had charged at the mountain lion full on, and started chasing it through the forest for a mile. The mare was never seen again, and others of the herd had to care for Jynx themselves. After that, no other foal had ever even dared venture off with Jynx again after the close call. Jynx's mother had named her Kayla, but the herd had started calling her Jynx due to how many close calls before her mother was taken from misfortune. Jynx understood her misfortunes, and didn't judge others for calling her Jynx. Besides, it made her emotional when others had called her by the name her mother called her.

By time Jynx was around half a year old, she had ventured into the forest for the first time since her mother disappeared. She thought that just maybe... she could find her mother and alive, just lost. Unfortunately, this had only lead her into trouble. She traveled long and far, alone. Due to her misfortunes she had walked into a rope trap set up in the trees. The rope snapped tight and spooked her. She had tried to dash, but it had only caused the rope to tighten on her leg. Due to her panic, it had caused her to not watch her step, and another rope had caught another of her legs and she at that rate flopped to the ground. Moments later she could her rustling in bushes. She could smell canines. but didn't smell like wolves or coyotes like she knows. She was surrounded by three dogs, and minutes later a few humans on horseback.

The humans had carefully moved in on Jynx. The slowly and carefully placed jacket over her face as they put rope halter on her. They then untied the ropes from her legs and helped her get up. They pulled out some treats and held them up to her before uncovering he face in hope it keep her calm and help build trust before leaving their destination. She had never tasted something so sweet out in the wild, and it had drove her to confusion. They had removed the jacket after they mountain back up on their horses and lead her their direction. She started to panic and reared a few times in hope to escape. Instead she just slipped on some wet grass and fell on her bum then gave up. An hour later, they had arrived at a ranch. Her head rose high as she had saw other Wild Mountain Equids there. She caught scent of something she knew.. took her a moment to think, and suddenly she hears braying she'd recognize anywhere. For the first time ever, she had good luck on her side.. it was her mother in captivity and the two were reunited. The whole herd had thought she been that mountain lion's meal that night that she saved the foals lives. However this wasn't and isn't the end of her misfortune. The humans had caught onto this filly's misfortune and had also named her Jynx, and she was stuck with the name for good.

Equid Name: Bracken
Short Story: bracken never knew her sire. she was born into the world and he was not there. all she knew was her mother and the two other mares that traveled with them. her mother always made all the decisions: where they slept, where they drank, where they grazed. thats how it always was. her mother's head was constantly on a swivel, ears turning this way and that. bracken never understood why. life was good! she got to play in the snow, and she got all the attention from the mares. she didn't have anyone her age, but she enjoyed the older quid's company.
the four of them spent many years alone, never leaving the icy mountains. they were all she ever knew. she had a knack for finding trouble: a hungry mountain lion, falling in a ditch, finding berries that made the whole her sick. every time she had bad luck, her mother was there to save the day. she fought off the lion, pulled Bracken out of the ditch, and found the herd water to clean out their mouths and bellies.
something changed when she was almost two. something in the air it seemed. all life on the mountain seemed to freeze, then all of a sudden the screeching of birds flying overhead shook bracken's little herd awake. her mothers whole body tensed in a way bracken never knew was possible. something was seriously wrong. her mother's head shot up high, a snort escaping her, a warning. her foot pawed at the ground. bracken knew it was time to go. it was such a blur, bracken cant remember who started moving first, but there they were, bolting from their usual spot. bracken could feel her heart thundering through her chest. her mother was guiding them this way and that, picking up on noises and movements in the surrounding area and dodging them like she could see the threat in front of her. it felt like danger was all around them. this was clearly something bracken had never experienced. but her mother seemed to know. and if it scared bracken's mother, it terrified bracken. but they were going the wrong way. they were headed toward an open valley. bracken's mother taught her to never go to an open valley when in danger. stick to the thick, snowed in forests. seeming to sense her confusion, bracken's mother shot her a look that said it was their only option as they galloped harder. they got to the edge of the coverage, but bracken's mother went out in the open, and seeing no other choice, the rest followed. there was an eery silence that bracken has never been able to get out of her head. a silence like the dead of night in fresh snow. and then, a bang and the earth shattering squeal of pain released from her mothers throat. dark, nasty smelling liquid poured from her shoulder as she crumpled to the ground. bracken skidded to a stop, calling out for her mother, who only weakly lifted her head and squealed again, this time at bracken, telling her to run. bracken was frozen. but she felt the push of one of her companions, forcing her onwards, away from her mother. what was happening? why were they leaving her? where was the danger? bracken didn't know. she just ran.

she now knows there was a time when foreign humans came to their land, hunting her species for their manes, tails, and fur. thats what they wanted from her mother. and thats what they got. they've since gone away, to where, bracken never asked.

she blamed herself for a long time. it was her bad luck that got her mother killed, just like it had made her stumble upon the mountain lion, fall into the ditch, and find those rotten berries. she was inconsolable. her two mare companions spent many moons building her back up, making sure she knew that sometimes bad things just happened. it wasn't her fault. she outgrew them eventually, and they encouraged her to venture off on her own. they taught her to keep her head up and lead with kindness. 'the world may not have been kind to you, but it also may not be kind to others. make up for the worlds failure with your own kindness'. and thats what bracken did. she looks out for others, just like her mother did, in order to honor her.

Equid Name: Azar -fire/fate/coincidence/bad luck
Short Story:

BANG! FLASH!
The skies roared with such fierce intensity above the young filly. The loud crashing of thunder hitting with such force that she could feel the vibration of it surge through her tiny form and bounce around her chest. Her body springing up in fear as it reacted before she could even wake. Spinning on her hooves with unsteady legs, her eyes opening only to be met with overwhelming darkness. A shocking surprise for the young foal as the sun had been bright and the skies calm when she had settled down for her nap. But now? Now it was dark. Darker than she’s ever seen it be, as if all the light in the world had been snuffed out. Her panic increasing each drop of rain that hit her, overtaking her as she let out a shrill scream. A cry…a call…a desperate plead for her mother. One that was quickly over taken and drowned out by the next roar of thunder.
FLASH!
It was only in those few seconds of lightening strikes, that the world was briefly illuminated. Those flashes of light was the only time she could make out any of her surroundings. Her small form whipping around back and forth as she spun around in circles. Her motions only stopping as she saw movement, a dark shape moving just beyond the treeline during one of the flashes of light. And then another, and another. Relief washing over her as she took off as fast as she could towards the group. It was her herd, she just knew it was. And everything would be okay again, as soon as she caught up with them. Her little heart pounding as she ran, silently calling out; ‘Wait for me!’
BANG! FLASH! CRASH!
She was nearly there, she was so close that she could almost feel her mother’s comforting warmth surround her. Her tiny hooves propelling her as fast as they could through the trees until she was suddenly sliding across the wet mud as she struggled to slam to sudden stop. Her eyes squeezing shut as tight as they could as her lungs held in as much breath as they could take in as she both braced and waited for impact.
FLASH! BANG! FLASH!
Yet the impact she anticipated to come, never did. Frozen in place and unable to open her eyes, she continued to hold her breath. She felt the crash, the vibration of it colliding to the ground had coursed through her body. It struck with such force that it felt like explosion going off in her face; the intensity of it making her feel like her heart had stopped beating. Yet, she felt no pain, no bump or scratch. In fact all she really could feel beyond the heavy rainfall was something brushing against her back and sides. Many times, it was almost like she had a million bugs tip toeing across her body back and forth. Slowly cracking an eye open as she began to regain control of her body, she finally took in the world around her once more. Her lungs releasing their held breath in a long sigh of relief as she saw that she had just barely been able to stop in time. The large hefty tree that she had barely seen start to fall had landed just mere inches in front of her, its broken branches surrounded her as the wind blew their leaves all across her.
BANG!
She thought she was a goner, fated to be squished by the falling tree. Yet she was not and now suddenly remembering that she had been racing to catch up to her family. Panic staring to rise again as she scrambled to try to get over the massive fallen tree. Her hooves slipping and sliding as they failed to get any hold. A desperate and fruitless struggle to even just see over the tree let alone get over it. She had always been small, smaller than all the other foals in her herd but it had never slowed her down. Why? Why, in this moment, was her size suddenly a problem? All she had to do was get to the other side. It was the only thing standing between her and her family.
FLASH! Crackle…pop.
Her energy fading and her efforts slowed as the air around her began to warm and light slowly flickered around her. It wasn’t until the smell hit her nose that she reared backwards and scrambled away from the fallen tree enough to see the one end was being swiftly over taken by flames as it headed directly for her.
THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
Her heart beating out of her chest as she hightailed it away from the fire. Running as fast and as far away from both it and the storm as she could. Even as the rain stopped falling and dark clouds faded away to light, she kept going. She couldn’t stop, fear guiding her steps. Her little legs propelling her onward as both her home and the storm faded into the distance. And they kept going until she startled to stumble and her legs began to wobble. Each step getting more and more unsteady before she ultimately collapsed. Becoming nothing more than a tiny heap on the ground, too exhausted to move let alone keep her eyes open. The world fading away as they drifted shut.
“Poor thing barely has any meat on her bones.”
She didn’t know how much time had passed nor what was happening around her beyond the darkness but she could suddenly feel something touching her. Barely able to draw the strength to crack her eyes open, all she could make out was movement before the darkness took over once more.
“Load her up, cant leave her like this.”
Her heart skipping a beat in fear as her body suddenly felt weightless, like it was floating away.
“I doubt she can even hear with all that swelling through her ears.”

Equid Name: Manic
Short Story:
Manic has always been a bit.. out there. She's extreme to the core and takes everything to the max. That's why others wouldn't believe her when she said she wasn't the one to scare the herd leaders young filly one fateful day. Manic had always been the one to start trouble in the herd, she would play pranks, and act more like a young colt than an adult mare. Her best friend was the polar opposite, a do-good stallion that had not a single mean or plotting bone in his body.

On the eve of their Halloween traditions, the older mare, Manic had been spotted conversing with the leaders young filly, both in a spirited conversation. Manic liked the filly, and didn't feel right pranking the young foal. She could learn to prank however, so a teacher student bond was established early on. From then on, the pair were almost inseparable, and because the filly was willing to partake, quickly overtook the stallion for Manics favorite equid.

Over the next year, Manic and her now-not-favorite grew apart, and she began to use him as a fool, to let the young filly learn to prank on. He almost always fell for it, and he was quick to reprimand the pair. as luck would have it, the following Halloween, Manic and the young filly, now a yearling, were off in their corner once more, plotting a prank, when a shadow over fell the pair. Manic jumped between the shadow and the yearling to keep her safe, and the yearling only cowered and shrieked. At her call, the rest of the herd was quick to come to her aid, but all they saw was Manic now facing the yearling, her ears pinned back as she stared daggers at the cowering mass: her body tense, and her tail as large and frizzy as if it had been charged by static. To everyone else, it looked like Manic had jumped out and scared the yearling, and they tore her apart for it.

Shortly after she was forced from her home herd, the yearling claiming Manic had scared her, even though both she and Manic knew it was something much bigger than either of them..
