Marking - concepts/ideas = focusing on life and avoiding death, symbols from loved ones appearing to her but disappearing one day and having to go on a quest to find them again that allows her to finally accept death as part of the life cycle and process her grief

Name: Nadia [meaning "hope" or "expectation" in Arabic]
    Prompt:
"If we're all born to die, and we all must die to live, doesn't it all seem rather... bleak and pointless?" Nadia asked her mother in a soft, solemn voice, tears spilling over as they rolled down her cheek and onto the soft earth below. She knew it was silly to ask aloud-- the dead cannot speak, after all. She just couldn't believe that her mother was really gone. Her once warm and welcoming body now represented by a cold and stationary stone head, crudely carved with the heifer's name, birth, and death date. It felt like some sort of cruel joke.

Just days ago the two had been enjoying tea down at their favorite cafe, sipping from delicate cups and delighting in simple pastries. Laughing as they would any other time they spend together. Not a care in the world, not knowing what would soon come. At some point amid all the laughter and idle chatter, her mother had sighed, and turned to face her directly. "Nadia, my dear. Have you ever thought about the afterlife, what you might become?" Her daughter, taken aback and puzzled by the almost dark turn in topic, set down her tea cup and tilted her head in confusion. Rather than await Nadia's response, her mother carried on. "I think I'd like to be a bird, no, a cardinal. With their brilliant red hues and adorable little masks. Soaring the skies and foraging for little seeds." And the elder cow laughed, amused by the thought. Nadia was... concerned, having lost her appetite by now.

"I really wish you wouldn't bring that up, mom." She muttered, her mood having gone sour. "I... I don't know what I'd do without you in my life. I can't bear the thought of losing you." Nadia felt a lump forming in her throat as her gaze met that of her mother's, who still wore a cheerful smile despite it all. "Now now little cow, you'll have to grow up someday. I can't be here to hold your hand forever, you know." And she reached across the table, lightly resting her hoof atop Nadia's. "But I will always be with you. You may not notice it at first but you'll feel my warmth, feel my presence. I promise you that much."

And that had been their last conversation. Her mother having passed in her sleep just a day later. Nadia was alone again. No siblings to turn to, no father in her life. It had always been her and the old lady-- her best friend, her mother. As she stands by herself at the foot of her mother's grave, she can't help but weep. It seems like hours pass before she can finally drag herself away and back to her cottage. When the door clicks shut behind her, the ensuing silence is deafening. As she makes her way through the silent halls, she can't help but note how cold it feels, how stale the air is. The heifer enters her room with a heavy sigh, throwing herself into her bed with a thud, and succumbing to the exhaustion.

It takes several weeks before she's able to get back into a routine, forcing herself out of bed every day has been rough. Taking care of herself has been even worse. Her eyes are bloodshot, hair tangled and frizzy in most areas. She promised herself she'd step outside today, breathe in some fresh air and maybe let the sun's rays warm her fur. Nadia doesn't bother checking her reflection as she heads out the door, she knows she's a mess. Her looks are of little concern, as it seems pointless to try and make herself presentable-- who was there to impress? She sighs as she steps onto the cobblestone path that leads to her door, closing her eyes and taking it all in. The crisp morning air, the white noises of the forest. None of it feels right. "It's not the same without you, mom." Tears begin to form in her eyes as her head drops, a silent sob wracking through her. She can't bring herself to stop, can't hold it together as she falls to her knees and cries out for her mother.

The loud chirp is what snaps her out of her episode, followed by a particularly sharp prodding on her withers. When she turns her head, she's rendered speechless. A little cardinal stared back with equal awe and confusion, ruffling it's feathers before taking off, a tuft of Nadia's fur in it's grasp. Her eyes follow the bird, stuck on it's brilliant red form. It lands in a nearby tree, tucking the fur into the nest it'd been working on. The bird must've only recently taken up residence on this side of the forest, as it takes off to find more materials to continue constructing it's home. Nadia hadn't even realized she'd been holding her breath, as she releases it in a stuttered exhale, tears still rolling down her snout. Her chest is filled with a familiar comfort, as she finally pushes to her feet once more. She moves until she's settled in the soft grass beneath the cardinal's tree, and spends the next several hours watching as it flits to and fro. The bird may think nothing of the little cow below, but to Nadia? This is a sign from the universe, the heaven's above gracing her with a gift she never thought she'd have again. "I guess I'll have to put out some seeds for you, later, huh?"
