Stepping out from the barn, the sun shinning onto what looks to be a clear morning you take notice that a swift
breeze blows across the landscape, ruffling your fur. You also notice that some feathers cross your path.
Duck feathers! Quickly you look around to see if you can find your flock of feathered waywards. All you can see in the distance is one lone duck. Chasing after the duck you hope that it will take off and lead you to it's other feathered friends. Eventually it does. Unfortunately for you,
the flock is scattered. Some are swimming in the stream, others are nestled down into the long grass picking at it for a morning meal, and some are even further up onto a hill enjoying the sunshine.
This all may seem easy for a quick round up but, it's not, to add insult to injury, there's
obstacles in your path. First is getting down to the stream, the hillside is rocky and sharp. Going down won't be easy, and you have to step carefully lest you want your paws all cut up! Once you arrive at the stream you let out a loud bark to try and alert the ducks that 'hey it's time to stop playing and get back to the farm.' None of them of course heed your call and continue about their ways.
As you come closed to the shore, putting your paws into the frigged waters, you feel yourself begin to sink slightly and pull back onto solid ground. Frustrated you let out another bark, this one more demanding. But, the ducks still pay you no mind. After all you're not the one who normally rounds them up. Therefore you have no authority in their eyes.
Looking ahead you look to see the other ducks further on the other side of land.
Sniffing you try to find out how these ducks made it to the other side but, it becomes clear, they're ducks. And they can fly to the other side. Leaving you no obvious path to get to them.
Welp there's no way around it, so you must face the terrible cold and plunge straight into the water! Lucky for you the current isn't really strong so swimming across is fairly quick. But, now you're ALL wet! And you smell like a wet dog too.
Though it takes sometime and you're able to dry off, you finally manage to round up the flock and get them across the stream, back up onto the bank that is connected with your farm. Or, so you think. You've spent ALL day rounding them up because they don't respect you. Leading you to and fro, now you have to find your way home.
Herding them along to the main road, you come to the fork, you've seen this place before driving to and from the market with your owner. Putting your nose to the ground you begin to sniff and sniff out the scent of the road to take home.
'Turn right!' you bark at them, giving a nip at the air to hurry them along and show you mean business!
Quickly though it begins to get dark, and your energy is fading. Though being a collie means you keep going till you drop! And as it turns out, you've followed the wrong scent and now you've taken a slight detour. While the forest looks like the quicker choice. Herding a bunch of ducks through it is less than ideal.
You stick with the open field, you can keep an eye on the ducks better and nothing can sneak up and snatch any away from you.
You make it across the open field but now night has fallen, and there's no way for you to see if the ducks get too far ahead of you. Your ears pivot at the sound of quickly approaching foot steps. Growling, you bristle your fur, ready for anything that might take your flock from you. But, a quick bark let's you know it's just another collie. They offer you a chance to rest but, being a collie who doesn't rush into things you
ask for more information as to where, and how they will be giving you and the ducks a place to shelter for the night.
The other collie answers all your questions and leads you to the place you are to stay for the night. The ducks and you find it to be a nice restful sleep, and wake at the first rays of dawn. You know your master is going to not only be worried about the ducks but also about you. Gazing up you spy
Wispy clouds dotting the sky but otherwise the day is clear and the wind not nearly as strong as it had been the day before.
Bringing the ducks back to the farm brings you a sense of relief and fulfillment. You've come to appreciate the hard working knowledge the more seasoned herding dogs have and this brings a new found respect towards them..
