Halter: Artist’s choice
First prompt:
Tell me how you came across this wildie at the Carnival - minimum of 150 words
There wasn’t much to decide or choose from. The pasture had horses in the same state. Wild and caked in mud. Most seem to be generally fine in terms of health, some just a bit skinnier but nothing horrifying. It seems that they had found a large wild herd stuck in a mud hole and rescued them. I decided to go with a random pick of the herd.
“This mare? Ya sure? She’s a cold one. Doesn’t really react or put up much of a fight compared to the others.” One of the wranglers mused.
I gently approached the mare who was standing by the edge of the pasture. She glanced at me before looking away. Her eyes held a lot more life and emotions than she ever let out. Panic, rage and curiosity were prominent in them. I offered a few slices of apples and carrots which she hesitantly took. The mare ate some but didn’t finish.
After signing some paperwork, the stable hands helped to separate her from the herd and load her up into my trailer. She put up a bit of a struggle when she was loaded up but after placing a cover over her eyes, she calmed down and went in.
“Y’might wanna get a vet to check her out when she’s more settled. She’s a bit more on the skinnier end and she doesn’t each much.” The wrangler said before heading off.
With that, the trailer with this seemingly cold mare was off to her new home. (253)
Second prompt:
Tell me how you have started to gain their trust and Halter break them - minimum 150 words
The mare spent 2 weeks resting and settling into her new environment. The stables were still pretty new and she was the first mare I had brought in. I tried my best to help settle her in by providing her a routine everyday so she won’t be too caught off guard. The place is already very foreign to her. Having a set routine would at least help to keep her grounded.
I realised that this mare isn’t as cold as she was thought to be. She could be quite the feisty one. If she doesn’t want something, she would turn around and kick the door or wall. She makes her likes and dislikes very evident. I would spend hours each day talking to her and watching her explore and walk around the mini-pasture connected to the back of her stall. It took some time and patience but she eventually started to calm down and open up. It started off with small things such as coming up to sniff me or allowing me to touch her. It took an additional week before she allowed me to wipe some of the dried mud off her face but that was as far as she would let me.
In order to halter break her, I started by getting her desensitised to it. I brought out the halter and let her sniff it and get used to it. I would hang it by her door when I’m not around. As I slowly bond with her, I would hold the halter up to her face everyday, sometimes letting it touch or bump her nose. Eventually, she allowed me to slip the halter around her face. She was just as shocked as I was but she didn’t shake it off. She stood there and stared at me. A minute passed before the silence was broken by her nuzzling into my hand.
“Good job, Natlan” I spoke softly.
Her eyes shone with determination and pride. (327)
Third prompt:
Tell me how they do first time under saddle and how their grooming went - minimum of 150 words
As more time went on, I was able to bring Natlan out to the big pasture. She was extremely happy that it was incorporated into her daily routine. Natlan has now allowed me to walk and touch her sides and other parts of her body aside from her face. It seemed that she was ready to try a saddle. Similar to the halter, I allowed her some time to explore and smell the saddle. I would also carry the saddle around her, letting her know that the saddle is near the side of her body by gently bumping it. I would also start to stroke and apply some gently pressure on her back to let her get used to the sensation. Natlan knew something was up, however, she took it in stride and before long, the saddle was on her and buckled it. She received numerous praises and treats that day.
However, before she could be ridden, she had to be washed first. I brought Natlan to the outdoor stall. It was a peaceful morning and Natlan was in a good mood. I did my best by talking and coaxing her the entire time. I brought out the watering hose and started by spraying her legs first. She was caught off guard initially but eventually got used to it. Soon, I started to hose down the rest of her body. The cool water was pleasant on her. I let Natlan smell the soap before lathering her up. Bubbles were forming and Natlan tried to eat one. As I washed off the soap, I realised just how beautiful she was. Her red coat was shining beautifully and she was a sight to behold.
I dried her off with a towel and took a step back to admire her.
“Gorgeous girl! You’re all clean now!”
Nathan beamed with pride. (307)
