Age: 6.5yr
Prompt:
Death-
Screams, growls, and yowls split the air. Awoken to chaos.
There had been signs and scat. Everyone was creeping about on patrols, jumping at every sound and many cats had the dead eyes of several sleepless nights. There were two queens with kits so they were more short handed than unusual. Everyone knew the dog pack would need to be driven out. Of course, Fierceheart wouldn’t be part of that. Born with a twisted foot she’s been trained as a medicine cat. Well, technically still in training. But she had been collecting extra supplies with her mentor to prepare for any injuries that might occur while the warriors drove the pack out. SecludedGlade was planning on meeting with neighboring clans tomorrow to drive them out together because the large dogs would be too much for any one group.
Instead, they were one day too late,
Fierceheart jolted awake to cats screaming in fear and pain. The concussive bark of a dog right outside the medicine den had her scrambling up. Her adrenaline was pumping but her mind was clear and sharp. As she peeked outside she took inventory of what was happening. They were a small clan. Most of the warriors were focused on the largest two dogs. Taking turns or darting in and out trying to inflict wounds and keep the dogs from coming farther into their home. Her mentor was already treating wounds and an apprentice had been sent to get help for the other clans. The two queens were side by side to keep a dog from entering the nursery. Fierceheart felt some relief until she saw a thin brown tail slip around to the back of the nursery. Fear seized her heart as she pushed her twisted limp faster. No one else had seen the fourth dog. There was no hesitation as she saw and leaped onto the canine much larger than herself. She had had no formal warrior training but she fought with an unmatched ferocity. She clawed and bit and kicked with all she had, barely noticing the sharp pains erupting over her body. It felt like hours but she knew it was likely only a few minutes before other cats began to show up. As the others began to drive the dog off, she turned her attention to the kits, not understanding why she was having so much trouble walking. Tears formed in her eyes as she saw at least one dead and another who was losing a lot of blood. The last thing she remembered from that night was trying to stop the kit’s bleeding.

Birth-
While life had moved on Fierceheart still had times of guilt, grief, bitterness over the loss from the dog attack. She knew an important part of being a medicine cat was accepting and moving past the times where a cat couldn’t be saved. But that one night of silent ceremony didn’t seem fitting for a life snuffed out too short. So much potential, gone. Not to mention also having to cope with one fewer leg and new scars barely healing over. So Fierceheart went walking to try to process. As she did, she noticed squirrels in the distance scurrying around, grabbing nuts and burying them in the ground. From her mentor's teachings, she knew many of the nuts would remain forgotten and end up growing into new trees. It gave Fierceheart an idea. A little time later and she was standing with a freshly buried acorn right over where they had buried the two fallen kits. The death of these two could help support new life. Their potential energy could grow into something else.
A couple moons later, Fierceheart snuck out of camp to visit the clan’s gravesite. For the first time since the attack, she felt a glimmer of hope and peace as she saw the moonlight shimmering off the first leaves of the sprouting sapling.

Life-
Fierceheart mirrored the growth and maturing of the Life tree. She eventually stopped mourning and continued with her training. She soaked up knowledge like the tree soaked up light. Leaves sprouted and fur regrew. As its branches grew thick and strong, so too did Fierceheart’s remaining legs. She practiced climbing to continue strengthening her limbs and many medicinal plants could be found nearby.
Years later, her own mentor passed. Fierceheart spent the day up in the branches tempering the bitter loss by reliving fond memories. As is unavoidable in life, she still has hard days or times when a patient didn’t make it. On those days, she comes out to the grand oak. She feels inspired by how much life is supported by one individual. Mice scramble along the roots, a woodpecker has made a nest hole in the tree, other birds swoop through the branches. She knows a mama opossum has been spending nights tucked high and away. She smells where a herd of deer had passed through the night before and can see the tracks of a racoon nearby. Moss grows on the roots and insects are found all over. And of course the squirrels scurry, collecting and distributing the fallen acorns every year. Fierceheart also creates life and provides for her clan. There is an unspoken rule in the clan that any creature on the Life tree is off limits. It was a place of peace and life.

Congrats! I loved the story you told and how you communicated Silas's complex emotions and motivations throughout ^^

I'd also like to award a R MYO (in place of a RU) to ArithMedic! I love the life you crafted for Weasel Blade and how you developed her connections to those around her!

I'll also be awarding HMs to Thani, canadianhowl, and Baobabel !
