Nkelele could feel the deep beating of drums even from within the abandoned twoleg hut they resided. Slowly they emerged, the summer air damp and full of bugs. One paw in front of the other now slowly they walked to the batismu maza, the pool where they would receive their name.

Slowly they waded into the waters, the whole time staring at the Mvidi and their masks until finally Nkelele was told to stop by a simple lifted paw. The drums echoed and Nkelele felt like they were slipping from their body out of sheer worry.

What would the spirits deem them to be?

When the pirates wrecked on their shores, the High Council was quick to shut the gates, refuse their ambassador's request for aid- eager to have nothing to do with these strange cats.

Puck was up on the walls, watching the sea, before civilians were shooed down by the city guard imposing the new security measures. He saw a bit of the wreck- enough to be certain that those cats were not a threat.

Their ship was in shambles, half-buried in the thick sand, most any supplies surely wrecked along with the ship.

He saw cats strewn on the sand, huddled by makeshift fires, attempting to boil water to drink with leaking pots.

He saw the ambassador they sent, to ask the city for aid- she was hurried through the city by a guard, clearly hoping to keep the populace from noticing her, but he saw- and she was gaunt, and afraid.

Puck's family has never been prosperous- they get by well enough, and have neighbors who support each other, but have never been anywhere near a part of the city's nobility.

If they are so quick to turn on an outsider in need, bearing no harm- he worries, what would it take for the council to decide the lower citizenry isn't worth their while, either.

It's not something he likes to consider- but he is not so naive as to believe they have the best interests of cats like him at heart.
