They remember the day they cried so much. They lost the love of their life, the tear marks a permanent reminder of their eternal sorrow in their cursed unlife. Doomed to never meet again with their love, they are frequently seen weeping or mumbling bitter words.

mira had one love. they had met early in their childhood and have stuck together ever since. he was her whole world-- and she was his; of course they never confessed, too afraid to ruin their relationship.

until one of them, terrified inside, asked the other if they can meet at the local cafe after dinner-- the one they frequent all the time after school. the one where everybody gushes and whispers about how good they look together. mira was eager for the day to end as she constantly glanced at the clock and time dragged on for what felt like years as she waited. finally, after the final bell rang, she giggled and raced home. though they'd usually walk together, her friend didn't mind as he too made his way home.

but he's gone now and poor mira believes it's all her fault.

why are they crying:

They say that winter is lifeless, the lake, her lake, is frozen over when she accompanies the researchers back to where they found her. She knows that is certainly untrue. The wind whistles through the branches, icicles chime as they crash to the ground, and feet crunch through the snow as they make their way to the clearing. The birds would still call out if only the researchers were not tramping so loudly.

They are all bundled in resplendently long white down jackets with furred hoods, as if they even winterized their lab coats for the occasion. Vida’s blue fur coat compliments the scene. As if she belongs. No, she still does belong.

Vida prances forward, the snow lifts up around her. The breeze ruffles her fur while the researchers stand huddled like the penguins she sees on research tapes.

The lake ice looks dark and glassy. She gave an experimental tap to see if it would hold, then another until she plants all four hooves on it. Vida skates a few laps to find her legs but she is twirling on the ice in no time. She distantly hears the researchers warning her to be careful. This is Vida’s lake, surely she will be okay.

Is this fear? Is this homecoming? The cold, dark waters lap around her. Arms, gently holding her as she sinks into the depths. Far at the bottom, Vida sees a light, faint and flickering.

Who are you? A voice echoes in her head.

I am a star that fell from the sky and landed here. I was watching this planet for such a long time that I wanted to be a part of it. See everything a bit closer. The star pulsed brighter. I have so many questions!

Why does the water like to meet the shore?
Is there a reason the trees shed their fluttering leaves?
What are all the reasons why you cry?

I don't know the answers but I'll find out! Vida was ready to say more until she felt something tug at her midsection and dragging her up through the ice.

"Wait I wasn't done!" Vida gasps out.

"If you were down there any longer, you would have died." One researcher is sopping wet and already being bundled away in reflective blankets.

Looking at the sorry state of everything she caused, Vida felt a tear trickle down her face. Ah add that to the list of why fawnae cry.

"Let's hurry back to the lab."
