Prompt: halcie was peacefully resting on one of the many balconies of the pantheon until a flash of movement in her periphery caught her eye.
“
aureo? what are you doing here?”
a chinchilla torbie was standing in the distance with an awkward look on his face.
“oh…uh, nothing, really. I’m kind of bored and was hoping to know what you do in your free time for fun when there’s nothing to do.” he meowed uneasily. “i mean, it’s true that you do have a lot of free time, right? i want to have fun too.”
halcie titled her head as if she didn’t understand what aureo was saying.
“what i mean is, what do you do for fun?”
halcie’s eyes lit up in understanding, then she glanced at aureo and squinted at him in suspicion. “did something happen? aren’t you always happy and having fun? why do you suddenly what to have fun too? is everything…okay?” she asked worriedly. aureo jumped at this question
(suspicious indeed) and stammered, “y-no! i’m totally fine! i’m j-just bored, that’s all!”
“alright! well, even if something is wrong, i won’t dig into it, since it must be personal.” halcie grinned, wrapping her long, tufted tail around her fellow god’s shoulder.
“anyway, you want to know what i do for fun in my free time? oh, that’s easy. FOLLOW ME!”
the bimetallic molly recklessly bounced off the balcony railing and flew down towards the endless greenfields below. “hey, wait up!”
halcie grinned back at her friend and landed on a very ordinary-looking spot of grass, staring at the small figure of aureo in the distance, who was flying towards her.
when he arrived, she stomped a front paw three times and revealed a tiny hole, then proceeded to squeeze in. alarmed at the sight, aureo looked down the hole (where he saw nothing) and called nervously, “halcie? where did you go?!”
a red paw yanked aureo into pure blackness before he could react. “aureo, you HAVE to promise not to tell any of the other gods about this. pretty please?” aureo, still surrounded by complete void, shivered and called to where he thought halcie’s voice was coming from. “it’s fine! i’m great at keeping secrets, trust me!” (in fact, he was one of the best people to tell if you had a secret.)
soon, the blackness disappeared and all around him were colourful stars and shimmering masses of nebulas. “woah.” aureo gasped in awe. “wait. isn’t this…THE ETHER? WE’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE! INSIDE IT, SPECIFICALLY.”
halcie giggled and batted her companion’s ear. “it’s fine, i go here all the time! where do you think i go when i’m nowhere to be found in the pantheon? the mortals never recognise us, we’re too far. besides, this place is super fun!”
then, the young goddess of delight jumped onto a large comet, riding on it for a short while before floating back up to meet aureo. “you try! you can literally do whatever here — oh, just don’t like go to the dreamworld and show yourself to the mortals, or destroy anything, obviously. AND ABSOLUTELY, DO NOT LOOK FOR THE SUNNE, PLEASE!”
aureo nodded and hesitantly started bouncing on asteroids. “woah, these are fun!”
halcie winked. “the best part is, the ether constantly shifts!”
“wait, then how will we get back?!”
“don’t worry, leave that to me. stop worrying! have fun!”
the duo danced on and along the stars, flew across the ether, and felt galaxies and nebulae.
“wow. this is pretty fun. thank you, halcie. but i think i have to go back now.”
“aw, shucks, it’s no problem at all. and see you! i’ll lead you back to the hole.”
once aureo left, halcie felt a pang of loneliness as she watched him go, but it went away as she continued to play amongst the ever-shifting expanse of what the gods and mortals alike knew as the ether.
for nothing would ever bring her as much comfort or joy as frolicking and exploring the ether.
to halcie, the only thing better than this was having fun and doing what she loved the most for fun — but with a friend with her.
