Prompt:“What is it that you dream for?” A strange, deep voice asked.
Is somebody there? Duck was no stranger to strangeness, the unknown, and anything other cats would classify as ‘weird’ but the unnerving voice was a whole different kind of unusual. It’s question even more so.
“A dream you say?” Duck replied. “Who has dreams anymore… they only ever weigh you down. An unreachable goal that forever digs at your heart. I don’t have a dream, never have and never will.” His answer was firm with disgust. In his line of work, you couldn’t afford to have something personal get in the way. A mercenary had to make hard decisions sometimes, why make the choices ever harder?
But that didn’t satisfy the voice. “Then you are a fool, born to die with no satisfaction from your life. Come back here when you have an answer.” A great howl from the wind, and as fast as the stranger appeared it soon left again, never revealing its identity.
I’m the fool? Who even is this guy anyways! How dare he insult me. But the question still sat in his mind. A dream, huh? What even is there to dream in this world anymore.
Taking a look around, Duck noticed the pillars that were once dull and old, covered by moss, now had a faint unearthly glow. A presence took over them, and that presence told her to leave. It was starting to creep her out…
That night, Duck only had one thing on her mind. A dream. Why did the stranger care so much? It wasn’t its life that was being affected.
Well, when dawn arrived she finally had her answer. Though it should’ve been obvious from the beginning. Taking off from her home in the guild, Duck made her way back to the strange ruins she discovered the day before.
“Strange Voice!! I have arrived with an answer to your question.” She shouted. Silence followed, but the pillars once again glowed. It seemed to be inviting her to speak. “You asked me what I dream for, but I replied with nothing in mind but my duty as a mercenary. For that is my dream; to carry out my life as honorably and powerfully as I possibly can. Every day since i’ve been born and for every day moving forward; that has been my dream.”
A soft chuckle, and the lights from the pillars came together to form the shape of a large cat. “I am glad you took my words to heart; you are better for it. Now, please, follow your dream. Represent your guild with the heart of a tiger, and represent my spirit in your accomplishments. Thank you, Duck.” The cat dissolved and all that remained was a small pendant in the shape of a flower. Duck approached the object and put it around her neck, symbolizing her support of her new patron.
