Range Trotter #HW057

Postby ShadyBro » Mon Oct 16, 2023 3:43 am

Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Give this trotter a name (show, barn, or both) inspired by a specific bat species of your choice, and then add a fun fact or two about said species! Feel free to add additional fun info about your chosen bat to your prompt if you feel inspired to do so. Just make sure you don't pick the same species as someone else already has!
Please be sure to add sources for your facts or any images included in your answer <3

Show Name: Buddie’s Sting Like A Bee
Barn Name: Bumblebee
Gender: Female
Height: 13hh
Halter Color: bee themed pls:)
Prompt: This gal is named after the bumblebee bat. According to Bat Conservation International, this bat species is one of the smallest mammals in the world, weighing in at only about 2 grams and measuring just an inch long. They are also a more rarely observed species, so experts are unsure of their population status. They can only be found within limestone caves throughout the Thailand-Myanmar border.

Barn Name: Paige
Gender: Mare
Height: 11.3 hh
Halter Color: Artist's choice
Prompt:
Paige is named for Icaronycteris index, the very first species of echolocating bat! These little guys lived about 52.2 million years ago and were adorably tiny, averaging around 5.5" long. Some of the bones in their wings were as thin as human hairs. Itty bitty bat friend aaaah-

Paige's markings reminded me of a fossil dig, so I had to go for a bat from the fossil record. Her name is meant to reference this bat's age- it lives now only in history books, thus 'gliding from the pages of history' every time someone studies them.
Be the nonsense you wish to see in the world.

The tricolored bat is one of the smallest bats native to North America (1). The once common species was wide ranging across the eastern and central aspects of North America, but is now threatened by the disease white-nose syndrome (WNS), caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, causing rapid decline in the tricoloured bat population (1, 2). Bats account for over 20% of global mammal diversity, provide numerous ecosystem services, and are a valuable component of the food chain (2, 3), making WNS an incredible concern to the future of Earths ecosystem. The fungus colonizes the bats epidermis during hibernation and causes lesions that facilitate evaporative water and electrolyte loss, causing an increase in metabolic rate and decrease in carbon dioxide excretion. Combining these factors leads to increased immune response, resulting in metabolic acidosis from electrolyte depletion, often leading to death (2). Since the tricoloured bat is so small, WNS could wipe out an entire cave within months.
Recently, multiple reviews have highlighted the widespread issue of pollution and contaminant exposure in bat populations. Bats are exposed to an array of human-sourced contaminant classes, owing partly to their foraging ranges, which may include areas near wastewater effluents, agricultural fields treated with pesticides, and areas with traffic and industrial pollution. Research has found that the fungus associated with WNS is a derivative of human agriculture, meaning we could be the unfortunate and unfair downfall of important bat species.

Prompt: Hondureño is the spanish gentilic of Honduras, which is one of the countries where the Honduran White Bat species live!

The Honduran White Bat nest in a very specific plant, cutting the veins of the leaf and making it fold, forming a small tent where they can rest protected from predators, rain and sun!

When light shines through the leaf tent, the white bats appear green – offering them a bit of additional camouflage.

    Barn Name: camazotz
    Gender: stallion
    Height: 15.2hh
    Halter Color: like the flames
Prompt: the desmodus draculae (or also giant vampire bat) is an extinct bat species that lived in central and south america and is the largest known bat species to ever exist - experts say that camels and deers were along the bat's prey. the time and reason of extinction is unknown, but some finds are dated to be from around 3600 to 13,000 years old. the first fossil was found in 1965 and it was formally introduced as a species in 1988, not much is known about it despite an extinction date of not too long ago.
despite the fact that we don't know much about this bat species, it had an important role in other cultures. it's said to be the inspiration for camazotz (meaing: death bat), a god in mayan mythology of night, death and sacrifice, and it also served as an inspiration for several legends of the mura people about caoera, a vulture-sized blood-eating bat.
