poem or prose:
a fallen kingdom in despair
with only its queen remaining, unaware
dancing with ghosts of those she used to know
such a very long time, so long ago
and the ghosts, they all danced
as she remained stuck and entranced
they spun her around in the old hallowed halls,
through cold winters, summers, springs, and falls
her sacred oath had been broken,
her reality unrealized, unspoken
she never questioned why the days repeated,
for too far in her mind she had retreated
only dancing, dancing remained
not the crumbled walls, all faded and stained
she didn’t see the sun rising, or the moon gracing the sky
she only noticed what was there before, like the smell of freshly baked pie
once beautiful tapestries, now reduced to dust
the crown upon her head covered in rust
swords scattered, plates shattered, wood burned
every table and chair once perfectly arranged, now overturned
her enemies had struck during a fabulous ball,
but before she could do anything she felt herself fall
her world went black, and then it was fine
they were all there dancing together in time
deep in her mind, somewhere she knew
that her kingdom was gone, it was true
her scared oath, though broken left her bound
for thousands of years, twirling around
though the stones were all ruins, she still couldn’t admit, couldn’t see
that her reality wasn’t what she saw it to be
it would be to painful to realize,
to look with truly seeing eyes
to understand that she was a ghost too,
it would be too much, it just couldn’t be true
so the fallen kingdom in despair
could only wait, and hope, its queen would someday be aware
