It had been a long, cold, lonely, rainy winter, and the rain had yet to stop. It was still cold. It was still red and it was still ugly and foggy. Probably the most telling of all worrisome things was that no-cat had heard from Chroma in about season, which didn't speak well to the state of things in the Void. Fortune's End had recovered, after much complaint about the taste of the medicine he was being fed, and was well enough to go on patrols - but he chose not to this time, opting to stay back in their 'camp', and check on the integrity of the rain shelter. It was more probable he just didn't want to get sick again, but Viperstar forgave him this one. He didn't particularly like being out in the wet, either.
They had been given several more 'gifts' from Chroma, even without his clever words to back them up. One of which rendered a single one of Viperstar's snakes nothing more than a dumb animal - as one evening, he had fallen asleep with Trek's slithery head against his, and the next woke to a brown cat a good half-size larger than Viper was, purring up a storm nearby. It didn't take a genius to put two and two together. The other snake - devoid of its companion - had slithered off somewhere near the sea, likely to hunt or find fish for the group. That had been a task he'd been requesting of his snakes up until now. However, Trek - or Hope Within Tears now - had opted to tag along on this patrol, worried about the way that the void kept getting bigger, while their amount of land... was not.
It was Hope that walked shoulder-to-shoulder with Viperstar as they strode down the sandy path leading toward a new-to-them area uncovered by a windstorm a few nights back. The remnants of a children's playground attached to the fair, resplendent with a rusted merry-go-round, a slide that had long since melted into the landscape and was covered in reddish-green moss, a gigantic sculpture of some vaguely doglike animal with plenty of places to perch, and a falling-over gazebo which provided a good deal of shelter from the driving rain. Hope noticed that first, and guided the rest of the group to huddle under it, hunching himself down, and flattening his ears before he relaxed, and started to groom himself as dry as he was liable to get.
"I brought snack. Snake. Snake-snacks. Snakey-snakey-snackins." Sing-songed their resident medic - who had popped into existence at the bottom of a newly-discovered ravine, and had no problems getting out. He was an expert climber, and had a talent for acrobatics that none of the others could hope to match. He had given his name as Hearthunter, and immediately fallen into the role of caring for the group's health and wellbeing... even if he had his not-so-sane moments, and an unerring tendency to stare blankly at the people he was attempting to help. It was unsettling... but Hunter knew his medicine at the very least. He wasn't super forthcoming about his past, but he clearly had some physician-y leanings, given what he knew about the human, cat, and dog anatomies. He was the one who had treated Fortune, and who - by all accounts - was very much the cat-to-see if one got sick. {-1 Snake}
Hope gave a strained smile at the pink cat who was a good size-and-a-half smaller than both he or Viperstar. His head dipped in thanks, as he started in on the proffered reptilian cuisine, making absolutely sure it was not one of the pets. Seeing no stripes - just large scales and a sort of mottled brown-gray color, he dug in, sharing with the other cats. While he ate, he watched the rain pour. It seemed as though it had been raining his entire time here, but there were surely one or two days since he emerged that it had been dry... right? Well, no - not that he could remember. He also couldn't exactly poll Chroma about it - the deity had been silent for the entire time as well.
"Does anyone have ears on Chroma?" Hope asked, once he was done with his portion of the snake, waiting politely for the other two to finish before he expected any sort of answer.
"No." Viperstar stated, swallowing his morsel. "And that somewhat worries me. I've been expecting him to weigh in on all these new additions, but so far.. nothing. I even asked to talk to him a few times, and not a word. Either he's ignoring us - unlikely - or something is truly wrong. Either with him, with the void, with our connection, or just plain wrong in general. He's usually not this... introverted."
The medic-cat swallowed the last part of the snake-snack, and licked his chops in an over-exaggerated fashion, one ear pinning back as he thought some. "You know, maybe he's just tired of us." he said, glancing up and across at Hope. "Ever think of that? Cats yowling at you twenty-four-seven, three-sixty-five wouldn't be something I'D want to continue ad nauseum at least. Could be he's cut us off."
Hope shrugged, and adjusted, folding his legs under him into a large loaf shape. "I thought that might have been the case, too, but I asked... the others. Odd seems to think it's strange, and Fortune was concerned. The one other I asked, Depth, didn't have an opinion one way or the other. Then again, to hear him talk - which is admittedly rare - you'd think he still expects to get attacked here, after what happened with Odd."
The leader stretched out, and flopped onto his side, legs still splayed, looking backward at Hearthunter. "I'm worried too, but I don't really see anything any of us can do. Just... maybe don't dismiss his presence that easily, Hunter. He could be ill. Or maybe distressed. Or depressed. Nobody knows, because nobody's seen him. Heck, we don't even know if he's a cat or not. He told me he's not - at least not usually - but that could be a lie. I just know he's been getting stranger every time we talk. He used to have this sickly-sweet, honey-blooded way of saying things, but over the course of the last season or so, that's died out to straight-up conversational. Then died out all together when he stopped talking to us."
Hunter flicked his tail, and his left ear in tandem. "No reason to think he's in trouble. He's a god, isn't he? A god that does godly things. Godly powers, all that. Pretty sure someone like that isn't going to go catching a cold or anything." He snorted. "I'll get rid of the bones later." he stated, nodding to their meal. "Leave 'em for now."
Viper was secretly glad that he caught Hunter on a good day. The tiny cat was just as like to spout off silly nonsense as to come at you with claws drawn on days that weren't so good. Since Chroma had said nothing to him about the tom's previous life, all Viper could do was guess. He knew Hope's, and the tug at his heartstrings for his old friend and comrade was just as strong and sure as it had been when they'd both been alive before. He KNEW he was Trek as sure as he knew the rain was red, and the fog was thicker than starberry cream. "This rain doesn't look like it's stopping any time soon." he stated, rolling back over onto his belly, and pushing himself up. "We should head back to check on Fortune and the others. They're bound to be a little-" he trailed off as he noticed something in the distance. New cat?
Said cat was staggering a little, as though he hadn't quite gotten used to paws yet. Hope and Hunter rose at the same time, and stood a little behind their leader to give him priority on how to handle the intrusion... but through the rain and mist, it was hard to see the specifics of the other cat. It was drawing closer though, and looking around as though lost or confused.
Hunter hissed in the cat's direction, which caused the smallish ears to perk up, as it slowly turned to face the group, now a scant yard-and-a-half away. Hope's heart gave a leap, as those eyes met his. The scent hit his nostrils, and even diluted by the rainfall, he knew. He knew. Oh please, let it be-...
Only barely hearing Viperstar's call to stop, and summarily ignoring it, Hope barreled his way toward the slightly-smaller cat, not feeling the rain slashing against his fur, or the gravel digging into his paws. He closed the distance in a matter of seconds, and by that time, the other cat had also realized, also felt the tug, the pull, and knew. This was...
"Trek?!" the other cat's happy exclamation seemed to reverberate in Hope's head, rattling around and eventually dropping to a warmth in his chest that not even the chill of the rain could banish. Instead of answering the call, he ran full-on into the other cat, rubbing up against his chin, his side, snaking his tail over and across the other's flank, and then pulling back to just press his head against the other's.
"I'm here. I'm here, Val. I'm here." he murmured, trying to keep the booming purr out of his voice, as loud or louder than the thunder crashing overhead, and brighter than the strike of lightning nearby. "I'm here. You're here! I... you, I... and we..."
The other cat purred in kind, rubbing his head all over Hope's. "Yeah. Me. I. We. Here. Together." he whispered. "I found you. He said I'd find you, and I... I found you." He scooted closer, and put one paw over Trek's back, eyes closed, just feeling his company and relishing the fact that he was here, with him.
Eventually both cats realized they had an audience, and pulled away from each other somewhat reluctantly. Viperstar was staring at the new cat as though he had three heads instead of one. ".... Valisk, I presume." he stated, meowing in a slightly deadpan way. "I had figured it had to be, for Hope to go ignoring my command like that."
Hunter snickered on the other side of the two. "Ah, young love." he meowed with a chuckle. "You two are sickeningly sweet. Welcome to the fold, Valisk."
"Ah, it's Truth in the Mouth of Lies now, apparently. Although please just call me Truth? It's a bit shorter." The paler cat laughed softly, and rested his tail over what of Hope's back he could reach. "Ah, both of your snakes are now us-less." he told his leader. "And honestly, Ian, I didn't expect to see you here. Chroma told me I'd meet you, but I was half-expecting him to be joking..." The other part of what the god had told him, he kept safe. He'd tell Tre-HOPE... later.
"So he's speaking to you at least." Viperstar said with a sneer. "Great. Nice to know he's not dead. Look, you've got a lot to catch up on, and we've got a patrol to finish back at the basecamp or whatever-the-heck we're calling it these days." He gestured widely with a paw. "As you can see, appropriate decor for me and mine."
Truth sighed, and glanced across at the rusted giants in the distance. "An amusement park? Honestly, Ian. You don't do anything by halves. It's always all the way with you."
"Not that name anymore." Viper said, turning to start toward home. "It's Viperstar now. I can't say my old name - Chroma took that from me." His tail lashed a bit as he walked, the other cats scurrying to catch up to him. As always, Hope and Truth took their place by his side. It felt 'right' somehow. He wouldn't say 'like home'. This wasn't home yet. Not when there was still this great mystery to be solved.
"Right. Viperstar, and you are...?" Truth glanced toward the pink cat, and quirked a brow.
"Hearthunter, call me Hunter. I'm the one that patches you up when you make dumb decisions." the medic cackled, and started off a little bit faster than the other three, eager to get back home, and under shelter again. Also eager to test his new medicine on Fortune - if he'd stay still for it. He had some really good ideas...
Hope rolled his eyes, and leaned his head heavily into Truth's, still purring. "Viper, is it okay if he and I...?"
The leader swished his tail in acceptance. "Yeah. Go catch up or whatever. I think I'm going to try and put myself as near to the void as I can-..." He trailed off again, looking up at the sky. It was starting to clear up, the rain trickling to a stop. "Huh."
Turning to look behind them, he grit his teeth with the raw irony. Hope and Truth had turned, and were headed back toward the beach... and a rainbow was in the sky, directly over the two of them. He snorted. "Well played, Chroma." he hissed under his breath. "Well played."
