Cat(s) Involved: Fortune's End, Love At Night's Call, Luck Of The Draw
Prompt:
Late night liaisons weren't typically on the agenda for the cats of The Dark Carnival, but some eyebrows were certainly raised when Fortune's End padded back into camp well past his normal sleep-time, interrupting Love and Luck, who were sitting watch while the others snoozed. The younger cat strode with a light spring in his step toward the tent where the others were sleeping, but Love raised his tail, and stalked over to stop him with a gentle paw to the side.
"And where have you been?" he asked, one ear pulled back to the side, while the other was forward and awaiting his answer. "It's way past turn-in. You snuck off to do some hunting or something?"
Luck dropped down to the other side of the young cat, intrigued by what his answer would be. Fortune didn't seem the kind of cat to flirt with the rules so very openly.
Giving a luxurious stretch that made both guards sorely miss their beds, he flicked his tail to one side, and gave a wink and his best attempt at a smirk. "Visiting a.... friend, shall we say."
Both older cats met eyes across the younger's back. Since when did Fortune need to sneak off to visit anyone? All their group was right here at camp.
"Whatcha mean, visitin' a 'friend'." Luck asked, tail swishing once in confusion. "Pretty sure you ain't got no one but us t' look for."
"You'd be wrong then." Fortune's head dipped, and he sat, starting to groom himself in an unconcerned fashion. Both guards then noticed the unmistakable scent of another cat on him. Another male cat, from the smell of it. Love's tail relaxed as he realized what was going on.
"Aaah, I see. Well then. Have a pleasant evening." he said, dipping his head to the younger cat before smiling across at Luck with a knowing glance. Color Luck entirely confused.
"Bullheart wishes you well too." Fortune said with a grin of his own, and rose in an unhurried fashion. "Oh... I need to bring him catnip before our next meeting..." His ears rotated to the front, as he started off toward the camp proper. "And I'll want to bring him some red rushes... oh, and maybe a trout! And maybe some weasel fur for the kids, and definitely some petals..."
Fortune's End trailed off as he vanished into the light of the tirefire, leaving Luck and Love to wander back to their posts.
"An' jus' what was that all about?" Luck of the Draw asked, tail swishing a few times the other way. "And who'n god's name is 'Bullheart'? Sounds like some sorta code for somethin'."
Love At Night's Call just smiled again. "I believe Bullheart is his boyfriend, dearheart." he said softly. "Just as you and I are together in a sense." His tailtip twitched a bit.
"Oh hey now, don't go takin' my little flirtin' like nothin' serial, now." Luck said, glancing over toward the other cat. "I ain't got no time for no datin' business. I got the patrols t' do, and all that." One ear dipped down as he considered what Love had just said. "Wait n' see. I ain't nobody's cuppa. You ain't gonna like me in like a week 'r somethin'."
The cinnamon cat nodded a bit, as though he'd heard it all before - he most likely had. "I'm not denying that you are indeed hard to please, sweetheart, but I consider your company - and your companionship - to be just what I'm looking for when my nights on duty get a little too cold." His tail curled around his hindquarters as he sat, and his head canted to one side as though listening or thinking. "Why do you think you are not worth my time? Surely, someone as confident as you would believe themselves above reproach when it comes to matters of love?"
Luck snorted a bit, and gestured with a paw. "I ain't one t' go makin' those calls, Love." he answered, ears pinning back as he thought about the question. "It's just.. I ain't... I ain't good at them feelin's things, kay? I ain't got no sense a'... ah, what did Viperstar call it... Deocratin'? Nah, that ain't it. Somethin' with a D..."
"Decorum?" Love offered helpfully. "I've noticed. Why does that make you any less worth affection than anyone else here? I like your rough-and-ready nature. Your manner of speech, and the way you handle things is just part of you. No need to hide or obscure what is there." He leaned to the side, and nudged Luck's shoulder with his nose. "Besides, it just makes you that much more of a catch. Especially for cats like me who enjoy a slightly-more-genuine outlook on life, and not the cultured, courtly manners usually associated with... romance novels and the like."
For a moment, the lilac smoke considered telling Love to drop the topic, but then his ears fell as he remembered the other part of his romantic troubles. He clicked his tongue, and looked to the side, not meeting the other cat's eyes. "I also ain't... great... with datin'. Never have been. S'always been more 'f a chore than it ain't." His left ear flicked while down, and he glanced to the other side, only meeting Love's eyes once. "I don't got that... that somethin'. That finesse stuff. I ain't got no pickup lines, and I ain't got no like... stuff to offer 'em." He sighed, and closed his eyes, crouching to his belly, and dropping his head. "I ain't romancin' material. Like at all. Surprised you even like me... yanno... like that."
"And that is exactly why you need a confidence boost. If you and I don't work - and I'm not saying that we don't, I'm just planning for all outcomes, you need to get out there and make yourself look good." Love's head lifted, and his ears relaxed. "And I'm speaking from experience. My past life, that's all I did. Take it from me, Luck - you're not the... ah... what's a good analogy... Ah. You're not the most unattractive fish in the sea. Sure, there are others out there who are moreso, but that's the case with all good things. Someone is always going to be better than you at something. You just need to focus on what you're good at NOW. If that's not romance, but you still want to pursue it... then find a way to do so that highlights your good points. Your courage. Your humor. Your cunning. Your strength. Instead of just focusing on the negatives." He reached out to touch his paw to Luck's. "And even if all that fails - you still have me. Just because I brought up the eventuality, doesn't mean I'm planning on going anywhere, okay? Even if you wanted to pull more people into this relationship - and I'd be fine with that, by the way - you've just got to present yourself to highlight your good qualities. What makes you shine is different than everyone else - and that's okay! You don't have to be perfect at dating to date. What matters is that both parties feel the love that's there... no matter how it's expressed."
Luck's mouth ticked upward into a softer sort of smile, and he looked away from the other cat, blushing under his fur. Love didn't have to see the blush to know it was there, and he winked at him - which just intensified the feeling. "So even 'f I'm bad at all this romancin' stuff, you think others'll... want me like you do?"
"Absolutely." the other cat said with a nod. "And if the times comes to pursue those angles, then I'll help you with that, and we'll make our best go at it." He laughed. "I'm not exactly a perfect specimen of romantic involvement myself, despite the life I lived previously. Heartbreak makes a poor taskmaster for matters of the heart. But I assure you - even with all our flaws, there will be someone out there who feels the way we need them to feel. For me. For you. For us. It might take longer for us to find that someone - but they're out there. That I promise."
The paler cat sighed. "I guess that makes me feel all nice 'n warm 'n fuzzy or somethin'... Thanks. Uh... you wanna... snuggle 'n stuff while we're watchin' out?" He asked, making as if to move closer to the other cat.
Love nodded. "Naturally." He scooted himself over, and adjusted so that he was resting most of his body against Luck of the Draw's side. The con-cat said absolutely nothing more, just enjoying the company of his boyfriend in the harsh chill of the spring night, and thinking about how much he loved him.

Cat(s) Involved: Viperstar, Odd One Out
Prompt:
"You know, Leader, I haven't seen you touch a bite of any of this delish fish since we brought it back from the hunt."
Odd One Out waved his tail a bit, and canted his head to one side. Certain wolf-like tendencies still had an unfortunate way of making themselves known in most of Odd's mannerisms. Thankfully, Viperstar understood dog language just as much as he understood cats. The leader sighed, and pawed at a rock in front of him, worrying it a bit, and rolling it back and forth.
"I'm fine, Odd. You guys go eat. I'll just sit here and think about when the next patrol will be."
"Nope." the mostly-white cat settled himself beside Viperstar, and nudged over a piece of fish. "Is it because it's that love-day?" he asked, gesturing with a paw. "Never had any use for it myself. I don't do those one-time flings, and heart-eye-emote goo-goo-gaa-gaa junk that the others do." He looked up at the sky, but didn't rise to leave, feeling his leader might benefit from a little company.
"... How are you so happy being so alone?" Viperstar asked, glancing in Odd's direction without really lifting his head. "Doesn't it get... oppressive? Not having anyone?"
Odd shook his head. "Nope. Why are you so affected by it?" he asked, giving Viper a nudge with his paw. "It isn't like you don't have friends. Underlings. Pawns. Whatever you call us. We're all here for you."
Viperstar sighed. "It's not the same." he muttered. "Not the same at all. I've never had any sort of relationship like... the ones they advertise on this holiday. Never had someone to hold me. Never had someone who cared about me. I was always so focused on the here and now, and my plans for domination, and my... projects... that I never had the chance to look for someone. I used to wonder... is it fun? Does it feel good? To have love? Guess you wouldn't know that."
"I wouldn't say that." the white cat gave a dip of his head. "I know it from looking at others, and feeling things out on my own. Sure, being with someone makes you happy. Just look at the expression on Fortune's face when he comes back from palling around with Bullheart? But it's just not for me. At least, not yet. But you gotta cheer up. If you're always so down about this, nobody's gonna give you a second look. You want love, right?"
The leader nodded, not looking up.
"Then buck up, yeah? I'll help you find someone nice. Don't worry. You might have never had it, but I promise you - you'll taste it one day. Probably tastes pretty good for someone like you."

Cat(s) Involved: Love At Night's Call, Luck of the Draw
Prompt:
Even though Love and Luck are from two entirely opposite ends of the spectrum of life, they somehow managed to 'click' when they met in the Carnival. Luck was a con-man from the wrong side of the city streets, and Love happened to be an escort for the highest of clientele. Their past lives inform the choices they make in this one, and even though Luck is self-proclaimed to be 'bad at feelings' - he and Love basically fell whiskers over tail for each other as soon as they popped up into each other's radar.
Love is generally the brains of the operation - he's the one that makes most of the decisions, and he's the one that decides the direction they're headed. Luck just sort of tags along, but he's got the brawn to make any who challenge them back down. He might not be the most burly of cats, but he does have a certain hardness to him that others are wary to be around - which makes it easier for him to chase off would-be nay-sayers. Both cats have a wicked tongue, but whereas Love will keep his hidden, and rely on his courtly manners and classy training, Luck had no such thing in his life, and generally tends to run off at the mouth. Love often scolds him for it, but laughs about it afterward - and often would like to say some of the same things.
In terms of showing their affection, it tends to be Love that enjoys the friendly teasing looks, the winks, and the tail-against-flank signs of PDA. Luck isn't good at physically showing those things (although accepts them perfectly fine), and prefers his actions speak for him, such as getting Love his choice prey (he loves shrimp) or offering to take over a patrol when the other cat is too tired, or just plain not in the headspace to go on one. Viperstar finds this slightly annoying, but doesn't really make any real effort to stand in between the two of them.
Where Love is deficient is in his street-smarts, and his casual social interactions. Something that Luck makes up for in spades. Conversely, Luck's lack of decorum and book-learning - which often gets him into a load of trouble - is handled with ease by Love's informative guidance. Between the two of them, they'd make a complete person. XD
