Prompt:When Cardamom first met Pygmy she was at her lowest. The convergence was beaming with magical light, more than any feyfolk or cat had seen in years and Elowyn, the first to enter the fey realm knew that she had to act fast to preserve the magical effects. She gathered as many nearby clans as she could and helped distribute the magical effects to each newly born in hopes that when they came of age to become hunters or teachers their magical nature would reveal itself. Cardamom was amongst those chosen to bear the magic gift, and her story simply began there.
Cardamom was a quiet natured cat, she enjoyed the simplicity in life and delighted on walks alone through the Fey'Lynn forests.
One particular evening, during a visit from the great Elowyn herself, cardamom had snuck off against her guardians wishes again. Elowyn was there to check on the nearby clan of course, but also to check on those whom she gave the gift of magic to a year ago. It was around the time most's magic would come to light and it was no different for the other kits in the area cardamom was from.
Light magic and fire magic aplenty, even a few who showed signs of a stronger resolve and magical tankiness.
Cardamom knew deep down that her magic wasn't going to show itself. She felt no spark of light, no warmth of fire brewing deep within...not even a stronger sense of purpose or resolve. No what she felt was the same thing she had always felt all her life, a love for nature and quiet walks amongst the forest. Cardamom wasn't upset by this self revelation but she knew her parents and guardians would be disappointed that she could not move up and find sanctuary in the inner tree, where the warriors and teachers lived.
When she arrived back home, after a long day of just walking and enjoying nature, she was met with a very serious looking face.
"Where have you been? The great one has been waiting for over an hour, she insisted on seeing you before she left"
Cardamom sunk a bit down, embarrassed firstly but also a little nervous to be seen by Elowyn the great, knowing she had waited for nothing.
"I'm sorry, it was just such a nice day and-"
"Come on, just get inside, she has waited long enough."
Cardamom was ushered inside, and promptly placed in front of Elowyn to be examined and tested.
Cardamom sat there in silence as Elowyn circled her with a silent, almost judging eye. At least that was how it felt to her, maybe it wasn't as bad as she was feeling, all considering.
It was only a moment, but it felt like an eternity before Elowyn stopped, placed a paw on her own and closed her eyes.
Her parents sat by and watched, hopeful. Hopeful that their only child would have some sort of talent, something to help them move up and into the inner tree.
Elowyn simply stopped, a puzzled look on her face before stepping back to grab her things.
"Well, does she have a gift? Has it awoken yet?"
Her mother piped up, hopeful that the silence didn't mean anything bad.
"She has no gift." Elowyn simply said, "I suppose even I make mistakes sometimes. I am sorry to have wasted your time"
And with that she left, swiftly out the door, and onto the next village to check on the other kits.
Cardamom felt a sense of sadness wash over her, she had known full well that the magic had not taken to her like it should have. She knew and yet she felt like she had disappointed everyone that she cared about. She heard her mother call out to her as she ran out of their home, and towards the thicker, denser forest. She needed to be alone for a while.
After running for what felt like an hour, cardamom stopped and sat beneath one of the many tall, pink trees in the territory.
She sighed a big sigh and collapsed up against it, just looking up to the sky.
"Why me?....This has happened maybe two times ever...so why me?"
She continued to talk to herself, questioning why this had to happen to her.
"Maybe it's because you aren't good enough, sugar?" An unfamiliar voice piped up, somewhere to the left of where she sat.
Cardamom was quick to jolt up, looking in the direction of the mysterious voice but seeing no one there.
"Look up a bit." The voice piped up again and cardamom did her best to angle her head into the trees to look for what she assumed was another cat.
However what she saw up in the trees was not another cat, but instead some incredibly small furry chinchilla. Something the clan would usually hunt and eat was sitting up in the tree across from her...talking to her. She had to be dreaming right now.
The small chinchilla cocked its head a bit, curiously looking down at Cardamom.
"I...I must be dreaming.." She voiced her concern, lifting a paw to rub at her eyes as she stared in the direction of the creature.
"Oh believe me, sugar, this is all real......Strange isn't it? Being able to understand each others words..." Cardamom watched as the small furry creature climbed down and onto another branch, perching up to stare directly at her.
"Imagine me just on my daily walk through the forest, coming upon a big one and understanding the words that come from its toothy mouth." Cardamom went to stand and all that she could think of was she needed to get back to the village, she needed to find her parents and tell them what had just occurred.
She all but sprinted out of the forest, towards home as a startled chinchilla debated following or not.
"Hey wait!! Where are you going?" The furry thing called out, not quite fast enough to keep up...Maybe it would have to just sit and hope that the big toothy one would come back around....
And she did come back, day after day the same spot. Cardamom had tried to explain to her parents what had happened but they were hesitant to believe her. Talking to another creature and understanding it? It had never been heard of, but maybe this was her gift..maybe just maybe this was something new that had been discovered. Maybe Elowyn was wrong about her not having any magical ability.
Cardamom and the small chinchilla had been cautious to get too close to one another. The would speak about their very different lives. Argue about things, learn new things, work on not calling eachother a "big toothy one" or "a tasty snack".
Growing a friendship that would be difficult to explain to the others back home. Finding that no one quite understood her love for the forest the way that she did.
"What do they call you?" Cardamom would ask one day, upon realizing that her newest friend had not given her anything to call her by.
"Pigerelli usually, but I am not too fond of that name. If I had to chose I would love to be called Rosalind or maybe even Cardamom!" she would fall into a fit of small chirpy noises, which cardamom could only guess was a laugh.
"You cannot have my name you little sna-..." She would huff, stopping herself.
"I am sorry sugar, but it is so beautiful!" Cardamom would roll her eyes, a smile adoring her face.
"I see nothing wrong with the name Pigerelli. but if you do not wish to be called that...how about..Pygmy?" Cardamom would suggest, seeing as how this chinchilla especially was smaller than any of those that she had seen in this forest before.
"Pygmy..." The chinchilla would scratch its chin in silent though. A moment would pass before she would jump off her branch for the first time and onto even ground in front of Cardamom.
"I think I like that name, friend."
