Prompt:
A dark haze smothers everything in sight, the taste of bitterness on her tongue wont go away and there's this puffiness in her throat threatening to close it completely. A sulfurous smell permeates her nose and she contorts her face into a tight cringe against it, eyes squinting into the blurry shapes of the night, billowing blackness covers her whole world from her mid-leg and up. She tries desperately to get underneath it, crouching low to the ground she sinks below the smog only to feel a wave of intense heat batter her pelt and singe her eyes, she hisses in surprise and panic. Rearing back, she feels her hind paws stumble backwards and then get knocked out from under her as she falls backwards over something, its hard and motionless on the ground but there's a jostle as she rolls over it onto the ground. Her eyes are screwed tightly closed but she tries to squint through them again, this time anticipating the stinging of intense heat as she drinks in the ash on scent glands and catches a familiar and more comforting aroma on it.

For a moment her heart is lifted into her throat and relief washes through her as she calls out, only to feel a heavy cold feeling flood her and an invisible, crippling weight draws her to her belly on the ground. Tears well in her eyes as she edges forward, careful and shaking forepaws brushing tentatively against long fur with a reddish brown hue almost completely drowned out by the grey of settling ash. The scent wraps around her like a comforting embrace as she shoves her face into the once soft and bushy fur, weighed down by the haze and grainy with debris.

Pressed so close the scent is clear as day- the endearing cinnamon-y aroma of her brother, warm and inviting as it always was yet soured by a distinct undertone of rot. She wails sorrowfully, the sound clear as a whistle over cracks and pops in the distance, red and orange licking into the choking black and grey sky. She sobs and wails hysterically for what feels like moon cycles, her chest clenched tight with pain and alight with the tingling sear of the smoke that envelopes her and the limp form of her littermate, until a yelp leaves her at the feeling of larger jaws than her own catching the scruff of her neck and lifting her away. "No!" She cries out pained and horrified, thrashing and trying desperately to get a claw into her brother's cinnamon pelt. "Please!"

Her eyes snap open with a start and her chest is heaving, her undercoat is soaked through with sweat and she can feel the soreness that comes from thrashing. Careful eyes watch her from a form unmoving aside from gentle rising and falling at her side, she feels guilt spread hot from the center of her chest to tingle in her paws and tailtip. "You were struggling in your sleep again," A calm and twinkling voice murmurs, tentative and considerate to not wake any others, "are you going to talk about it?"

The pinprick of threatening tears makes her jerk her head away, hiding her face, ears turned back. A throb in her heart of sorrow grounds her, a cold trill trembling from her nose, down her spine to her tail. "I can't." Her broken voice trembles, barely audible. "I can't."

She hates that feeling, the sympathetic look of pity in those intelligent, bright eyes. The way that such an expression dulls them, for her sake. She hates knowing it's on her, bearing into the back of her neck and seeing into her true nature, something impossible even for her to conceal for long.

A cold nose presses to her shoulder, it's intended to be comforting but it feels so far away. Like a touch she experienced in a past life, it's a gesture she remembers from another. She can't help but feel like it's an echo to that memory, she feels as though her paws aren't really on this moss right now. The fading vision of flickering red and orange devouring everything around her echoes in the back of her mind and the lump in her throat grows larger, harder to breathe around.

"We're safe now." That sweet voice promises, pressing her to look back into eager eyes. "It's happened, but we're safe now."

She doesn't say it, but her heart aches in ways too complex to explain.
    Are we...?

She'd thought they were safe, back then.

Cat Name: Qadira (pronounced kah-DEER-ah)
Gender: Female
Rank: Beta
Clan: Galerina Autumnalis
Age: 3 years
Prompt: Being a loving caregiver, Qadira's worst nightmare is loosing her younglings too soon. There is a very real possibility that this could happen in the future. There are so many things that could take her babies from her - poisonous plants, deadly creatures, diseases, the harsh environment. She shudders at the thought of all those possible ends. She has not yet had a litter of her own, but is hoping to be the matron of one soon. When she does, she will do her best to educate them well on the terrors that the world can hold while keeping a close, watchful eye on them.

Cat Name: Fern!!
Gender: Female
Rank: Warrior
Clan: Craterclan
Age: 12 moons (1 year)
Prompt:
It was too long ago and she was far too young to remember when it happened the first time around... Her mother and only caregiver... gone... She was lucky enough that a young cat had secretly taken her under his wing and would sneak her food, whenever he could. She remembered him, he was her only friend at a time when she was so frail from hunger. He would do everything he could to help rehabilitate her from the maybe days she'd gone without food as a kit. But just as she was starting to heal, as her strength was growing, and on the last day she saw him, she heard this awful wailing and screeching not long after he left.
The sounds chilled her to the bone and she hoped for dear life it wasn't her only friend.
Someone was screeching about stolen food then she heard him. His screeches echoing over the sands... She froze, unable to do anything, she knew she'd be nothing but a distraction, she couldn't do anything... That was moons ago now, she still mourned her friend, but she was still so thankful that he'd helped her enough that she had a chance at surviving on her own. She remembered that night begging the stars to protect him and to give her the strength to make it on her own.
She crawled out of her shrub home, and began to try to hunt, her tiny body wouldn't be able to take down much but she had to try...
Moons passed and she did make it, that night she managed to catch a bug, and later a small desert mouse, but she'd have to say that was her worst nightmare, the helplessness of hearing he friend's despairing wails... She hoped that she had made it out but she guessed that she might never know...

Age: 5 years
Prompt: A forest, covered in icy cold snow. Her paws thudded through it, as she raced back to the safety of her clan. Left, right, left, right, one step after another. She couldn't go any further though, and she felt her steps slow. He collapsed and gazed up and the shadowy figure that suddenly appeared in front of her. It said nothing, and she felt the cold seeping into her bones. As she watched, her ear tips fell off, and when she struggled to slink back, her toes detached as well. A scream ripped through her throat, and she awoke in her den. Snow was billowing outside, and she heard Emberflare mutter something next to her. He shook his head and moved deeper into the cave, further from the snow. Before she fell back asleep, she could've sworn to the stars that she saw the same nightmarish shadowy cat standing near her once again.

Cat Name: Moonchaser (tbd)
Gender: agender he/him
Rank: tbd
Clan: LilyClan
Age: 14
Prompt: His worst nightmare is being abandoned by his friends and family. It came true once, when he was just a small, apprentice-aged kitty. He had fallen asleep outside, sheltered by a berry bush, instead of inside his family's makeshift den. In the middle of the night he heard a twoleg coming. There were many in these woods, and they liked to take the cats back to the cramped twoleg houses with . Twolegs had already taken all of his friends, now it must be time for his family. He scrambled even farther underneath the bush, hoping the yumyums would shield his smell. They did, because eventually the twolegs disappeared. He couldn't smell anything, only the overwhelming scent of fruit. Once he saw the morning sun, he slowly slithered out of his den. He nervously looked inside his family's den, and, after seeing no one, he immediately ran away. There had been too many cats taken, and he knew, he knew, they were never coming back. He wasn't entirely sure where to go, he'd been in the same space all his life and just needed somewhere new. He kept walking, and kept walking, and kept walking. By the middle of the day, the sun was beating down hard and he needed to sit. Underneath a large spruce tree, he collapsed on the ground. He fell asleep there, and woke up at dusk. A cat had prodded him with a paw, and he looked tiredly up at the new cat.
"Hello," she said. "What are you doing?"

...

Moonchaser had stayed in his new clan for a few moons now, and was absolutely thrilled by his new friends. However, there was still the ever-lingering fear in the back of his mind that someday, they, too, would be taken away.

Cat Name: Gecko
Gender: Female
Rank: Loner
Clan: FrostClan
Age: 37 moons
Prompt:
When Gecko was just a kit, she had been plagued by nightmares - most of which involved her family. Ranging anywhere from a fight with her mother to one of her littermates caught in a raging fire, they appeared nearly every night until she'd nearly caved into giving up sleep as much as she possibly could. Some were realistic, and would just happen to come true nights to moons later - not a surprise; disputing prey with her mother was normal. But the ones that never came true tended to be reoccurring, and very vivid down to the detail each time. It was unpleasant, to say the least.

Eventually, she'd taken to sleeping away from her family, off in the bushes - when she was old enough to stop fretting about foxes hiding in the bushes. And she found the more she slept away from her family... the less terrifying the nightmares became. She began venturing further and further away, sleeping around bends and up trees as the screams of her dreamland sisters faded and her sleep finally became peaceful. Eventually, the nightmares were gone completely.

Figuring it had just been a weird kittenhood phase, she'd moved her nest back next to her family - she'd only left in the first place so she'd stop kicking and shifting and waking them up in the night. But now that her dreams were over, they could all get a good night's sleep. She'd curled in with her sister, Beetle, and shut her eyes contentedly.

The screaming and harsh blazes were sharp and instant. A nightmare - a recurring one, and one of the worst ones. Fire everywhere, heat pulsing, a hiss of pain...

Gecko woke with a sharp gasp. The nightmares... they weren't gone after all.

She cast a weary glance over the sleeping lumps of her family. Perhaps... it was time for her to go.

And so she'd gone - the next night, after spending a little more time together. She'd intended to say goodbye, but each time she looked into her littermates' faces, she just... she just couldn't do it. In the end, she'd slipped into the night without a word.

And ever since, she'd very rarely had a nightmare. These days... the only nightmare Gecko has is the lingering fear she may have to face her family again someday. And if she does...

Her old nightmares just might come true.
